The Wire 4x01 Full Reaction

The Wire 4x01 Full Reaction

Comments

Agreed. The spoilers are worse than the "when are you guys watching *insert random anime here*" questions.

Shaun Eberle

It's fascinating how many people just don't have the aptitude required to know what spoilers actually are and how to avoid saying them. Exhibit A right here.

Michael M

As said before I'd be more than happy to fulfill such a role (and other long-term members would possibly be too), but unless there was a way for a user to have comment-deletion privileges without necessitating having full access to the girls' Patreon account, including knowing the password, then I can't imagine the girls would ever be comfortable with that. The channel's their livelihood, after all. Perhaps there is a way for a mod to have access to certain features and not others, someone who knows more than I do about Patreon can correct me on that. So, unless there was a way to be a mod with comment-deletion privilege only, or the girls get a mod whom they know and trust in real life, then this is unfortunately a phenomenon that's here to stay.

TeaDrinker3000

Thanks TD. You too. We're all paying to see their genuine reactions; also I didn't have the show spoiled for me when I watched it so I'd like for them to have the same experience. Tbf, I think these are unwitting spoilers - I don't think folks are maliciously giving spoilers away but it still has the same impact.

Chidi.

Yeah wish there was a mod

space1999

You're a real one for having the girls back with regards to spoilers, appreciate you dude 👊

TeaDrinker3000

Surprise surprise, another fricking spoiler. L&M - best not to read the comment from Marvelous Dolcy.

Chidi.

Commenting so they won't see the spoiler

HenryM

"without spoiling anything..." you just did

HenryM

There's a spoiler just above.

TeaDrinker3000

Could you edit your comment to remove "your worst fears will not be realised with the kids " please? That's a spoiler unto itself. The girls knowing that is actually quite the spoiler given the nature of the show.

TeaDrinker3000

I dislike one of those kids…

Marvelous Dolcy

Can’t believe no one warned you. Then you don’t read my YouTube comments. This season is my fav, it reminds me of the film Stand By Me. But without spoiling anything…your worst fears will not be realised with the kids but it will be traumatic. Also worthy to note of which I should have said is about one of the creators of the series and Ed Burns . He was a cop for a number of years and then became a teacher in the inner city. Although not autobiographical most of the stories in The Wire are taken from real life…

Marvelous Dolcy

Probably not from Baltimore if they welcomed the kid back.

Shivering King Banana

He is from PG county. PG, Anne Arundel, and Baltimore County are considered better than the city. It's almost like a thing there where people from the county look down on Baltimore City people.

Charlotte Drolet

Never Forget 9/11. Hi space1999.

Lil Don075

@TeaDrinker3000 I didn’t think any of the 4 kids were from Baltimore? I vaguely remember an interview with Michaels actor saying they had to learn the accent and slang

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

That’s fucking awesome, do you look back now and think proudly of him for the role that he gave in such an important show?

space colon

Oh for sure, HARD AGREE But even with that huge obstacle the show also didn’t always have as many episodes with super awesome amazing 30 minute performances as other shows contending But do agree, like if McNulty was black the show gets even less attention smfh

space colon

Perfectly said! I cried so much while watching their BoB reactions, and I feel like this season will be just as emotionally draining

HenryM

That's crazy, are you a Baltimore native?

TeaDrinker3000

Now that we're here, I went to school with Dookie's actor. Middle school to be exact. I think I was 11 or 12 at the time and had a computer class with him in 7th grade. Then he went to film The Wire but with most our class being the same age none of us could watch it for obvious reasons. The one thing I remember was having a school assembly that welcomed him back so he could graduate 8th grade year. It was a surreal experience watching this show as an adult and seeing someone you knew in passing on television.

You’re off on your thoughts as to why The Wire didn’t garner any awards during its time space1999. There was one reason only for that and that’s the show centers around non-white characters. People who vote for those awards at that time and still mostly now see those types of stories as inherently “less-than”.

Luis

Oof I’m with you @Crab I adore Mad Men (🤞) but idk if any season of Mad Men has come close to impacting me as much as Season 4 of The Wire I think Mad Men has a much different focus as a written show, the focus on a smaller cast allows for much more nuanced character writing/dialogue At the same time this is what I think kept The Wire from being a favorite back in the day as far as tv awards are concerned, the show is less about individual dramatic performances and more about how those performances inform the themes of the show and the world the characters are in

space colon

I'm inclined to be really sardonic about this post and saying it's way over the top, etc. etc.... but actually, yeah. I am so damn pumped for this season with these two that I genuinely think it transcends the ordinary "reliving the show" proxy joy of a reaction channel

ErdTirdMans

"This is going to be [...] the best reactions to a season of television any of us are ever going to watch" until they react to Mad Men 😀😀😀 (im delusional, I choose to believe)

Kara

Appreciate you outlining the density and depth of the season as well as highlighting the things that LM will bring to the table with their videos I know they’ll be sensitive to the issues AND have elaborate discussions about the story/characters

space colon

The assistant principal Marcia Donnelly gets an award for having the most 'Balmer' accent in a show full of thick Baltimore accents

Shaun Eberle

Stripping back all the jokes and hype for a second, we all need to take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are for what we're about to witness. This is going to be one of the best reactions to a season of television any of us are ever going to watch in that the reactors are the most appropriate for the material they're being presented with. There are a litany of writers, filmmakers, journalists, historians, political analysts, moral philosophers, and of course American-residents who can offer a plethora of commentary on what is regarded as one of the most socially important seasons of television ever made. A season which has had more academic discourse following it than any other previously in the history of the medium, and probably ever will. In each chosen field, you'll have the respective experts who have and will continue to put into words that which the majority of the population simply cannot. What cannot be theorised, studied, or grasped by academia however is empathy, compassion, sorrow and grief. In this regard, the two girls are the most qualified for this season. I don't need to explain to anyone at this point the maturity, sensitivity, and intellect the girls have towards societal issues and people in general, but it bears repeating that the comprehension and subsequent emotional investment of characters is so paramount to socially-conscious art. When the art is holding a mirror to civilisation, we are by design met with the reality of our own appearance. As such, our understanding of the reflection, conscious or visceral, intellectual or emotional, will be one of the greatest tools we could possibly have for collective introspection. In the same way I view the interviews, the commentary tracks, the books, the college thesis, and the adjacent historical context as canon to understanding season 4 of The Wire, this reaction series will be of equal importance for its ability to reach that which goes beyond thinking: feeling. Both for this series' reaction and that of Band Of Brothers, this channel has been a lot more than just entertainment for me.

TeaDrinker3000

Love that for her, can’t agree more how bold that was Always try to recommend this segment Vice ran on her where they took her around Baltimore and she shared about how awful her childhood was https://youtu.be/dXhwGS84u7o?si=S-XDAlZV-wOcCNCx

On Snoop and the opening scene... A really brave choice to start the season with her. Pearson was not a trained actress and her speech is often hard to understand. Apparently that opening scene took several takes to complete.

Chidi.

Randy, Duquan, Michael, Namond, Kennard, and Donut. I will never forget their names and that’s all I need to say.

SwampFox95

In my own city, I was on a street that is close to a bad area known for the drug trade. There was a little kid, couldn't have been more than 6 or 7, walking down the street. When a police car passed. he hid his face with his arm. He did that so automatically and instinctively, it was sad to watch for someone that young to have that reaction to a police car. He must have picked it up from older friends or family who are in the drug trade. A terrible start at life.

You thought you had "your boys" of this show, but you better make space this season. The Boys of Summer bring a whole different side to the show, and this season you will care more than you already do about what's happening.. most shows focus on just extreme cases (breaking bad, sopranos, ECT) that can happen but is not necessarily relatable to the normal person. This is stuff that 10s of millions of ppl are going through daily in inner cities around the country and they does such a good job pulling emotions with relatable things grounded in reality. i wrote the original before watching. but i know it is hard to focus sometimes on the political scenes, coming right off intense scenes especially involving children, but yall know better by now that the reason they are including those scenes is cuz its going to matter and its all connected with everything affecting each other. so try not to be to hard on those scenes

Norman (Carcetti’s campaign manager) brings up zoning laws that support or bring in white voters who cities favor in elections, live in Durham NC and we’ve especially been plagued by this shit Cities are also incentivized to do so because they want to cater to any gentrified areas, wealthier people expect the areas they live in to be substantially nicer and for things like school districts to be economically segregated in their favor And of course gentrification - leads to - displacement - leads to - more severe poverty and affordable housing in crime ridden areas with worse job opportunities and schools - leads to - crime - leads back to - gentrification Appreciate the realism of Carcetti’s behavior, most people who run for any kind of office immediately regret it because of the stress they have to deal with (his ego can’t handle even asking people for support and catering to them)

The cuts back and forth between the school staff meeting and the police meeting are too perfect, they’re handed all these standard operating procedures (SOPs) that take so little into account when it comes to the actual struggles and nuances of the job Been in meetings exactly like this working peer support in intensive outpatient programs, youth inpatient facilities, after school programs and summer camps. The people who train staff in these SOPs are at a disadvantage because there are no good answers when they’re asked what to do if kids upend a teaching environment, just separate them from the rest temporarily (often times staff ask for the help of security or police) and put a note in to their counselor or case manager Bodie mentions Namond reached the grade he's in because of social promotion, social promotion and "No Child Left Behind" absolutely ruined any schooling opportunities for too many kids to count (we'll get to NCLB later smh) The assistant principal mentions that multiple teachers have been bought out, this happened in 7th grade at my school, went a full year without a science teacher. We only had substitutes or our teachers had to merge classes and teach directly from the test questions (our math teacher was an English major teaching math out of the textbook) Teachers stopped trying to break up fights eventually and stopped bringing in their own school supplies, just letting SROs (school resource officers or cops assigned to schools) handle any kind of disruption

Season 4! This is like sad Christmas 🥲 The season opener usually serves as the thesis statement for the season, Snoop is quick to learn about a subject RELEVANT to her interests/needs Felicia Peterson who plays Snoop was born at only 3 pounds, both her parents were addicts. As a teen she dealt drugs and was tried for second degree murder leading her to spend 6 years in Prison. The show continues to give back to the people of Baltimore with it’s hiring (the actress who plays the assistant principal also works in the Baltimore school district)
