The Wire 3x12 Reaction

The Wire 3x12 Reaction

So, let the countdown to Season 4 begin!

Chris Costelloe

That ending montage of season 3. That reaction is why I will forever be fans of you Lola and Milena. I used to be ashamed of the fact that everytime I see that I just bawl out crying but you guys, you guys get it man!

Karabo

You're a clown. Seriously. Leftist clowns. Guns exist. In America they're literally everywhere. The worst of humanity has access to them and you think law enforcement shouldn't have them? WAKE TF UP TO REALITY.

Lil Don075

He's just straightforward - he's not working an angle or being super underhand. He's got a code as much as Omar has a code. He's similar to Bodie, except he's probably more adaptable.

Agent Squirrels

Mouzone spoke of a "slow train coming" to signify reform. I'm not smart enough to know for sure what the connection might be with "Fast Train" in the montage.

Chidi.

He ended up being a disappointment as Littlefinger, although I think a lot of that falls on direction and writing, since he's clearly a talented actor. Littlefinger was written as a cunning man who used the veneer of his humble birth and stature to manipulate those with more power and prestige, something he was able to do largely unimpeded because he was persistently underestimated. In the show he's presented as a supercilious schemer who is so overt with his ambitions and mustache twirling that even the most trusting of souls would have been forced to view him with overwhelming suspicion. It was scenery chewing of the highest order, and along with Tyrion, Bronn, Renly, Loras and Catelyn was one of the worst translations of a character from page to screen in the otherwise reasonably faithful early seasons.

B Guppy

Stringer and Bunny are parallels. Both are "outsiders" trying to change the dynamics of their respective businesses, and both get burned when the gravity of the existing power structures becomes too great to escape.

B Guppy

Your reaction to Avon mirrors my own, where I went from despising him in season 1 to kind of admiring him in season 3, and a big part of that is how artfully the writers used Dee's murder to shift the moral weight for most of the Barksdale gang's season 1 atrocities onto Stringer.

Mike Conlin

Yeah rewatch 5 is amazing. To me 1-4 are all 10 out of 10s. 5 would be if given more time. They only got 10 episodes.

M Salam

Funny thing is, they wrote Season 3 Finale to be a show finale because they didn't think HBO would bring it back. It took petitions and multiple meetings with the execs on HBO to get them another season.

M Salam

Same I was completely team carcetti just because I was hoping he was honest which made be blind. Even during season 4 and 5.

Cole

The shot of Frank Sobotkas election poster always gets me

Darrach

The song in the final montage is called Fast Train by Solomon Burke. It's a beautiful song and I love that final montage. I agree that it feels like a finale. Season 3 is still my favourite season, as good as 4 is. I hope they see the show through, it's so worth it.

Mark M

Somehow season four is better.

the chosen one

I remember watching Season 3 and thinking it was the best season of TV ever made. Then I watched Season 4.😳 Cannot wait to watch it with you guys!

Matthew s

Personally season 3 is my least favourite, and it's still fantastic television. But yes, 4 does seem to be the fan favourite.

TeaDrinker3000

I ranked 'best to least best' since I agree that Season 5 is quite good. A couple of odd things that folks do that seem out of character aside, it effectively reinforces the themes that precede it. And it's just fun.

Joe Gaspard

I feel like season 5 has aged exceptionally well, especially these past 5-8 years.

orlanmop _

To anyone considering spoiling season 4 for them again to persuade them to keep watching, you gotta learn to tell sarcasm. They're not actually serious about stopping to watch here.

ODIS

Favorite of any show!!!

Doug

What a beautiful reaction, thank you. Another excellent and throughly satisfying season of The Wire “If it’s a lie then we fight on that lie.” - Slim Charles. This is a reference to the events leading to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 - a war which was fought on the lie of the existence of WMDs. In fact, S3 contains several parallels and references to the Iraq War and the so-called “War on Terror”. The season aired in 2004 so these references felt very acute at the time. “Get on with it, motherfucker.” - Bunny’s last words at the COMSTAT meeting mirrored Stringer’s final words before he was killed by Brother Mouzone and Omar. The two men trying to reform the drug game and policing bowed out with the same words. Speaking of Omar... he looked pretty disappointed when he saw Dante. Brandon was tortured in S1 but never gave Omar up. Meanwhile Dante had only a few cuts and bruises and gave Omar up to Mouzone. Not a good look for their relationship. Interesting how the opening scene of the season started with the towers being destroyed (another “War on Terror” reference); and the final scene saw with the rubble and wreckage of Hamsterdam. Immensely looking forward to Season 4.

Chidi.

Season 4 is about something you are not expecting hahaha but I can tell now Lola is gonna have hard time with season 4. About the ending of this season, it does feel like the conclusion of the show but I’m glad HBO decided to continue with this show.

Surreal post from r/books 13 years ago when Carcetti’s actor was cast as Littlefinger in Game of Thrones No spoiler comments, just a few fans of the ASOIAF books getting excited for his casting because he played Carcetti so well https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/cpcbc/tommy_carcetti_from_the_wire_cast_as_littlefinger/

I would say your ranking is pretty accurate among fans. I would also like to add for LM's expectations that 5 is not "bad". Just not as good due to certain story elements. It's like an 8/10 compared to the other 9-10/10s. They will still love it.

Zach

True they said they warmed up to him but they always fall short of calling him one of their boys. I’m just poking a little fun at them though

Alberto Cruz

They already stanned him multiple times.

Lil Don075

Smh too good, the people trying to change the status quo are shot down

space colon

Thanks for 1 through 3. Season 4 is considered (by many) to be the best season of “The Wire”. There’s a reason for that. It’s not a spoiler to say that my ranking of seasons, best to least best, is 4, 3, 2, 1, 5 (with 4 and 3 being a virtual tie). I envy you for getting to see the next two seasons for the first time. Enjoy!

Joe Gaspard

I’m going to need you girls to admit Avon is one of your boys lol. You two showed way too much emotion for him not to be 😂

Alberto Cruz

watched this show so many times and i never caught that lol that’s crazy

RH

I'm ashamed to say that upon my initial viewing, I was one of the dolts who fell hook-line-and-sinker for Carcetti's speech. I think this was partially due to expecting him to have a change of heart and to be a 'redeemable politician' character for the show. But in all honesty, a lot more came from me being swept up by the emotional weight of the speech itself. This is why I'm so grateful to have this channel, especially for shows as nuanced as this. The girls weren't caught off guard for one second, they saw through his bs like they were looking through a window throughout that entire scene. Ed Burns (co-creator) gave his thoughts of the speech, in an interview on NPR, which I'll post and link below: "I remember at the end of the third season, when he was still a councilman, we had Carcetti give an impassioned speech, and the camera gently panned in on him as he rhapsodized about saving neighborhoods and demanding better for the city. And it really was a beautiful speech. And you know, the writers worked on it for a long while. And yet, everything about the speech was just a recall and a retread of the drug war. And he was arguing for more warfare. And whereas, the whole of the third season had shown this police commander trying to struggle with it on pragmatic and practical terms, in terms of Bunny Colvin. And I was amazed to find that a lot of viewers, you know, longtime viewers, had watched that episode and they followed Carcetti right off the cliff. They were, despite what they had been shown for 12 episodes in terms of the box that the drug war is, they thought he was the solution, because he sounded like the solution. And that taught me a lot, you know, I kind of went all "Candide" on myself. I forgot what I was writing because I was shocked that so many people went with Carcetti." https://www.npr.org/transcripts/88039740?storyId=88039740

TeaDrinker3000

44:40 The discussion about Carcetti’s speech and the mayoral race begins Appreciate how transparent Lola and Milena are with their feelings towards politicians, not only in the show but in general. They really hone in on how Carcetti’s opportunistic behavior is emblematic of most politicians Bunny’s line last episode about trusting the word of an openly racist man over anyone in government really hurts. It’s fitting that the last conversation he had with someone in the season was Bubs, someone who saw the horrors of a failed system more than any other character in the show

Season 4 incomingggggg hold onto your butts. It's criminal how good that season is.

Kenneth thomas

I mean, they definitely are needed for certain kinds of criminal activity, that's obvious from the videos out there of the dangerous situations that cops often find themselves in, which you can easily find on the net. It's just that they shouldn't be wielded by people like Prez in that line of work, and that they shouldn't be used willy-nilly. There better be justification for their use.

Aj

That's a great point. Again, it's another exemplar of what mad The Wire so groundbreaking at the time of release. A cop show with very little "cop badassary".

TeaDrinker3000

We were talking about this back in season 1! This is honestly one of the first things I bring up when recommending the show A lot of people hear about Omar and get the wrong idea that the show is gonna have a focus on spectacle rather than grounded reality and social commentary

space1999

What I find interesting, personally, it's the shooting from the police side: no policeman shot one in this series even once till the end of the season 3, but Prez. And every time he did it... it was a huge mistake. Interesting idea, that shows us that no guns is really needed to prevent criminal activity, and the guns is basically just exists as an instrument of intimidating.

Uncounted

Season 4 is my favorite season... no doubt

De

Season 4 was largely based on a book that Ed Burns, the other co-creator, had planned to write but David Simon convinced him not to publish in case they got the opportunity to turn it into a tv series one day. Well, his wish came through. The rest is history.

TeaDrinker3000

It’s crazy they didn’t know they would get another season after 3 and then season 4 came and 😧😮🤯😭

Thomas

Words of wisdom from Slim Charles, and he ends up being the only major member of Avon's crew to not get arrested, too. On the surface, Slim shouldn't be likeable, he's an enforcer for one of the biggest, most violent criminal gangs in the city and is completely fine with killing people. However, he also has all the hallmarks of some you respect because he's honest, he's competent, he's loyal, he's not needlessly cruel, and he's also smart. He has just the perfect amount of everything for self-preservation and moving up in the criminal world.

Aj

You guys thinking your outros might get shorter without Avon and Stringer is cute. If anything your discussions are gonna double in length given what season 4 is about and I'm all for it!

HenryM

Goddamn it i was JUST tucked into bed with a cup of tea. You girls really do know how to time it well. 😁👌 And holy SHIT THE NEXT UPLOAD IS GOING TO BE 4x01 I HAVE BEEN DYYYYING TO TALK ABOUT IT AHHHHHH

TeaDrinker3000

This felt like a Finale because the show creators didn't know if they were going to get a new season

Wyatt Ranson

"Get on with it motherfucker". Bunny says this to his superiors in this episode. Stringer said the same line right before he was shot by Omar and Brother. A nice parallel.

Damien Fenton

OMG! They uploaded right when I got my food. So so happy!

Komikall

Looking forward to season 4. Maybe the most different season in a lot of ways from the rest
