The Wire 3x11 Reaction

Comments

You say, when Stringer is running away, “All the doors are locked”. Count all the times Stringer has said, “lock the door” when someone is leaving a room. Nothing is accidental in the writing of this show.

Joe Gaspard

Appreciate you PIG! It’s all good, LM know the drill. Like I said in the first comment all of these characters are introduced in the first episode of season 4 so after they watch that they’ll be able to look (They’ve already filmed the end of season 3 and know not to look till they finished season 4 episode 1)

space colon

That's definitely true as well!!!!

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

No big deal Space! Thank you for the hard work. Just omit future characters in the future is all I’m saying. Maybe only post them once the characters come on screen. Looking forward to next season, buddy!

PIG

I had to copy and paste the url of this post onto my web browser then it let me click the link to watch it on the YT app. Hth

Space Mechanic

It's age restricted you have to have an account that's over 18.

Shivering King Banana

You can still watch it on YouTube

Juliette

Did it recently get blocked? Really wanted to watch the discussion but it’s not loading up for me.

Space Mechanic

Wasn't it Avon who wanted Omar and his boy displayed on the hood of a car, in the middle of the neighborhood? He said to do it like white people do after they kill a deer. So Stringer was really just following Avon's orders with that one.

Isak Haugerud

String Bell was such a compelling character. I dare to say he was at least top 5 for me. Now that Omar and Mr bow tie here killed him, you do have to wonder how both of them screwed up Jimmy’s investigation. Also, by doing this, Omar should definitely be a person of interesting by other characters but time will tell. You guys are definitely going to love the next season, specially Lola :)))

Jack SV

Thanks space.

Chidi.

Smh, goated writing staff who were all for inclusivity and improvisation from actors Shame we didn’t get season 6 when David Simon had a great concept for it outlined

space colon

They stick to the patreon comments for the most part thankfully, has been a mostly spoiler free group for this show till recently

space1999

Btw, there are a couple of spoilers in the YouTube comments for the reaction you've just released (S3 Ep 3) - from the user WorldsPhamous. I have to say I’m surprised at the number of people who are revealing character outcomes or commenting on future events. I’ve seen other YouTubers react to The Wire and their comment sections are usually spoiler-free. Disappointing that hasn’t been the case here.

Chidi.

@Chidi. They have asked in the past for people to link images of characters This is for them to look at after they’ve watched so they can remember the characters names and faces (Lola especially has trouble with faces, it’s a running gag) Did this for season 2 and 3 and others have done it for specific characters or for other shows

space colon

You can always allow them to discover these characters by themselves...

Chidi.

It's funny you mention Stringer not pissing his pants. In an earlier draft of the story, Omar pisses on Stringer's dead body. I'm glad they cut that idea from the final story.

Chidi.

You sure? I covered up all the season 5 characters and the rest have either already been introduced or are introduced in episode 1 of season 4 (They already finished season 3)

space colon

There are a few spoilers of future characters in there, Space. Cool site, but maybe show them after they finish the show? 👍

PIG

@Aj - Yep. It was another indication of String spiralling out of control. He okayed Brandon’s torture and murder; Wallace and D’Angelo’s murders; attempted to have Omar's grandma and Brother Mouzone killed... as Sergei would say: "He had to die!".

Chidi.

@space1999 - Pelecanos also wrote the penultimate episode of S5 which is also another classic. Brilliant writer, brilliant show. PS: Ed Burns’ contributions were missed in that final season.

Chidi.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeetttttt

Kya Colosseum

Either not smart enough, or arrogant in thinking he can do it all himself.

ODIS

Character sheet including each character we meet in the first episode of season 4 (They say at the end of the discussion they were about to watch the last episode) https://imgur.com/a/U9jkYt5

space1999

Just about as close to a perfect episode of tv as you can get imo. The journey of Avon and Stringer's relationship throughout this show is so beautifully written every step of the way and their scenes this episode are amongst the finest. Idris Elba's performance in that final scene is so so good, you can see and hear the fear as he realises this is it for him, the dream is over. It's very similar to Bodie and Poot killing Wallace in season 1 (on Stringers orders), Stringer didn't quite piss his pants but he might as well have. At the time it was quite a shocking moment for him to die but it couldn't have been done better. Can't wait for the rest of your discussions on this brilliant show

Max Carter

WOW And I thought I knew a lot about the Wire but the people in the comments are OUTSTANDING.👏👏👏

INFJ-T Tyrone

🤡

Lil Don075

🤯I've watched the Wire several times but I hadn't caught that before. Good catch👍

INFJ-T Tyrone

Appreciate LM’s discussion highlighting a lot of these things we all laid out in the comments, including acknowledging that neither betrayal came from a place of malice I’m glad they could reach a place where they could feel genuinely emotional about this storyline

space colon

the site of stringer’s greatest ambition, the housing redevelopment, literally becomes his own coffin. brilliant writing

Sebastian

Yeah the boys hanging out on that couch and dreaming about that life feels like such a long time ago now

HenryM

Also another thing that never fails to baffle me is how String NEVER thought to bring Levy, HIS LAWYER, in on his building project so he can look over the paperwork, like just Why??!! That whole situation could have been avoided if he had just spoke to Levy, but yet another classic example of String NOT being as smart as he thinks he is.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

That roof scene lives rent free in my head, same with like every scene with Bunny and Carcetti

space colon

Man this episode never fails to make me emotional!!! It's crazy because out of the two, I only cared about Avon. But something about watching these two best friends who came up in the game together separate for good but also betraying each other hurt, even though they are not good people, it still made me emotional. Especially their last scene together, you can still see the love they have for each other even though they both know they just betrayed each other, neither one of them wanted to but to each of them it was the only way. I understand Avon's position way more than String's, by this point String had just done wayyy too much for Avon to try and defend him. But even then he still tried to see if Mouzone would allow him to fix it without String dying, he only agreed when he realized that wasn't an option. Nothing is more poetic, than these two being the downfall for each other. The greatest relationship in all of The Wire period, sad to see it go.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Love Avon giving Stringer a last meal before killing him just like Poot and Bodie did for Wallace It’s too perfect that both String and Bunny, the two characters who were fighting the systems they were in, meet up this episode and are ultimately taken down by their bosses Appreciate the show being progressive by having a man (Jimmy) feel degraded and used for his body Glad LM dug so deep into the roof scene! Now we just need to figure out who gets custody of Bodie 🥲

space colon

It’s almost feels like a callback to some of the scenes we had with Dee and the boys in the pit The life String and Avon have now is what they aspired to smh

space colon

I do remember thinking on my first watch "what's the point without Stringer and Avon?" but S4 ended up being my favorite season, very impressive to switch it up that much and still be that high quality. The show was always able to cut any character it wanted as long as the real main character remained: The city of Baltimore.

Nina

I feel like this isn’t talked about enough! Bold af to kill off String Love you highlighting the fact that this man wrote ALL of these penultimate episodes! Pelecanos is another detective novel writer like David Simon. As someone who’s generally a little hesitant to engage with that genre (honestly feel like McNulty as a character displays both the worst and best elements of those stories) I’m blown away that they could deliver such nuance and depth to a show inspired by one of the most harrowing books to ever dive into American poverty, “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men” Love that he came back for an episode in season 5 even after Ed Burns had left

space colon

I remember watching the rooftop scene for the first time and I didn't get as emotional as watching it now with you guys. The line "Just dream with me" and the hug hit extra hard this time around for some reason

HenryM

I'm glad it didn't happen, but damn that would have been a great alternate timeline to see. I mean, Avon was right. Every law enforcement agency in the country would be on top of them and they'd all be in cuffs in less than 48 hours.

Jeffrey Miller

One crazy thing that a lot of people don't catch is what's in the last call between Stringer and Shamrock, where the gang finally catch him. It has Shamrock telling him ''Those hitters you asked after, they're good with it'', suggesting that Stringer was going to go ahead with the Clay Davis hit, anyway, and managed to find people willing to do it.

Aj

BrillIant episode. Written by George Pelecanos who also wrote the penultimate episodes throughout the series (S1 - "Cleaning Up" - Wallace's death; S2 - "Bad Dreams" - Frank's death; S3 - "Middle Ground” - Stringer's death). He also wrote what I consider the best ever episode of The Wire in Season 4 so I'm really looking forward to your reaction to that penultimate episode. The scene with Avon and String on the roof is brilliant - two men who have betrayed each other without the other knowing. “It’s just business.” Killing off String was a brave move - such an ending for a highly compelling and charismatic character would usually be a no-no but here we see it coming and we’re invested because we’ve been following these characters for three seasons.

Chidi.

Stringer the entire series - "Yo LOCK THAT DOOR!" "Did you lock that door?!" "Lock the door." No worries String, every door is locked.

Chibi Sphere

The show writers were getting help from god for real 🙏🏽 only reasonable explanation 😂

Thomas

With his last dying breath Stringer Bell whispered “Aye Yo, Shut the door man”

David

Definitely. The rest of the show sprawls so much that it's hard for episodes to really stand out (the one that ends with Frank Sobotka walking to his death is the only other major one for me) but this episode, man. Just perfect all round. Special mention to Levy's scene - what a slimy bastard he is, but when he's laughing his ass off at Stringer's stupidity? Absolutely delicious.

Martin Heron

Best episode of the series? Best episode of the series. That scene on the roof... Goddamn.

Mike

Damn it, I guess I will have to wait until morning to watch this one but I can’t wait to see how you girls react to Stringer bell downfall lol

Jack SV

About to hit the hay so I'll check this out tomorrow. I really, really hope that you didn't end up reading that spoiler on the previous episode's post as you were so close to starting season 4 without having anything spoiled. I guess I'll know whether or not that happened when I watch the video. Anyways, R.I.P. handsome boy Stringer.

TeaDrinker3000

the best episode in the show imo

Cole

Classic episode with a great stand off at the start. Been looking forward to this reaction...

Chidi.

I hate this episode
