The Wire 3x10 Reaction

The Wire 3x10 Reaction

Comments

I’ve watched that Rawls reaction about a dozen times now…lol!

Chris Costelloe

You guys are great. New patreon subscriber mostly for your The Wire reactions (and have gone back in your catalog for “Breaking Bad” [and watched you reactorverse appearance]… and have zero concerns about your opinions there…lol). A show I think you would both love is “The Queen’s Gambit. It’s less action-y than some of your shows, but it has an emotional core that I think you’d love. And Lola, there will be kids upcoming in The Wire. I hope you don’t check out. It’s not always easy, but it’s the beating heart of the series. And there is hope to be found there. Love you both.

the chosen one

The point is we pay to get their genuine reaction to even the smallest details and seeing them figure out what it’s about is more entertaining and satisfying than hearing them talk in the intro about some random comment that told them about it.

I mean, spoilers I guess, but it's just the most broadest theme of the season that you'll instantly realize within 10 minutes of the first episode

Jeffrey Miller

Yeah, I bet you didn't...

Anoncatman - why give spoilers away? Not cool at all.

I always viewed Carver as the type of police that would become a product of his environment. When Burrell pushed him, he was able to get Carver to backstab Daniels. When he was around Herc, he was a shitty cop like Herc. When he was around Bunny, he started to actually evaluate what he was doing and his role in society. To me, Carver illustrates how a lot of people who are cops are pretty normal- they can be swayed to do good things or bad things with their position of authority. The problem is the institution often pushes them towards doing bad things and rewards/excuses those actions, while trying to do good things gets met with resistance. I see Herc as a dimwit who is mainly interested in himself. His bullying is to make himself feel more powerful. His lack of concern with the details of the job are because it doesn't directly effect him (or at least he doesn't realize how it effects him). He provides a great contrast to Carver- you can see how one (or multiple) bad apples like Herc can shift the entire culture and make average apples like Carver turn rotten.

Doug

Herc's an honest dumb guy and thinks Carver is very smart. Carver is a little more intelligent but has an ego and hanging with Herc all the time he's under the impression he's way smarter than he actually is. Carver can't admit to how dumb Herc is otherwise his own ego will take a bump, and Herc can't see how dumb Carver is because he's dumber.

@HenryM Sending good thoughts for exam 🙏

Daniels also went out of his way to include Carver on his team in season 2 after Carver had snitched on him to higher ups in season 1. He admitted that Carver was good and dedicated police I think that incident really shook Carver and made him reevaluate how he views authority. This is what lead to him blowing up at Daniels at the end of season 2, he had gone out of his way to dedicate himself to the Sobatka case (still messed up multiple times partially do to Herc’s bad influence) but he was so furious because he thought that Daniels didn’t value his efforts (Herc wasn’t nearly as upset) @Random Random love you laying all of this out

I never equated Herc with Carver. Carver seemed like a better person than Herc but occasionally he was brought down to Herc's level due to his bad influence. What Carver needed earlier was a mentor figure in the same way that Freamon mentored Prez. He mostly didn't get that so he was stuck under the bad influence of Herc.

I'd be more than happy to fill that role, as I'm here everyday and I'm mature enough to only delete a comment if it's an actual problem, but I'm unsure as to whether or not the girls would be down for giving a stranger on the internet that level of trust, even if I (and others) have been here for a while.

Please delete this.

I wish there were moderators here who could remove this. Probably too late though, they've likely already read this and been spoiled. Fuck you for this.

Dude, delete this

Even before this season, there were numerous examples of Carver being more open to teaching and mentorship. I don't think Daniels or Colvin would have wasted those speeches on someone like Herc.

prolifik5

"Hate to tell you, but" You fucking loved it and you know it 😈

Orr Malus

When people watched episode 3x10 live, do you think they knew anything about Season 4? Why do commenters feel the need to talk about the future so damn much? Can't you just let them discover shit for themselves? Isn't that why we're here? To see organic reactions? Edit: "But please stick with it" - Like what??? do you honestly believe they would just stop?

Just want to comment on Carver and the suggestion that his previous characterization in regards to the kids was unprovoked or came out of nowhere. I don't think it's necessarily that Carver had some special spot in his heart for kids that prompted his behavior, it's that Carver respects Colvin and is trying his best to make Colvin's project work. If you go back and watch season 3 from the start again, you can see from the very beginning how much Carver respects Colvin, and you can see throughout the entire season the ways in which Carver is either defending Colvin or trying to do what he feels will keep the project afloat. Colvin is attempting to mentor the younger officers under him, and while Carver takes to the mentorship, we see many of the other officers like Herc dismiss it. We can see this early in the first episode of the season 3x1 after Herc boasted to Colvin about beating the 14 year old kid that ran while Carver looked sheepish about it, establishing the different ways Herc and Carver feel about their actions when talking to Colvin. But this divergence between Herc and Carver becomes much more pronounced at the very end of 3x2 during the scene where Colvin gives his brown paper bag speech to the room full of officers. They make it a point to focus the camera on Herc and Carver as Colvin is talking. Herc looks annoyed or bored during the speech while Carver looks engaged. And right after Colvin finishes talking about the new approach they were going to take in the district, the "brown paper bag" approach that would lead to Hamsterdam, Herc and Carver are seen driving in a car patrolling the district. Herc is annoyed and angry about the new direction, asking if they aren't going to be busting up hand to hands anymore, then what are they going to be doing? Usually Carver is lock step with Herc. Usually he would agree with him. Usually he would also add his two cents, complaining about not being able to put his foot in someoness ass. But instead of saying anything, Carver just looks out the window at the drug crews on the corners, and then the episode ends. From this point, we are meant to see that Carver sees something in Colvin's vision, or sees some deficiencies in the way they have been doing things, the "Western District way," and is willing to try out Colvin's new approach. He isn't willing to openly defend it, not yet, so he remains silent as Herc complains. But eventually he does see that Hamsterdam is working, and once he has that validation, he begins to openly defend it to the other officers who are basically threatening mutiny. Putting out the various fires in Hamsterdam becomes Carver's arc through the season, both from the street level, and from his own fellow officers. When it came to the little hoppers, Carver saw that as a crack in Hamsterdam, and I think he saw his solution as plugging a leak. The little lookouts and runners are the youngest kids in the drug game and Hamsterdam basically abandoned them This created a weird bug in the system where all of the mid level dealers were making tons of cash but the kids that used to work for them were still around the drug game, but weren't making anything from it. That congregation with nothing to do would probably lead to the kids themselves drinking, doing drugs, or somehow participating in the debauchery. This was the kind of side effect of Hamsterdam that Carver knew Colvin would see as a problem. I think Carver was smart and sympathetic enough towards Bunny's vision to identify what was wrong with dozens upon dozens of kids roaming Hamsterdam aimlessly and how he could fix it. Since Carver directly reports to Colvin on Hamsterdam, and there are several scenes of Colvin asking Carver what is he doing to solve issues there, I believe this was Carver's attempt at being proactive. What's funny and totally consistent with some of Carver's previous characterization is he did probably get a little cash in it for himself (he smirked when he brought up his reimbursement for the basketball hoop and travel expenses, suggesting he might have taken a little off the top). So maybe it wasn't 100% altruistic, but he also saw it as a win win for everyone if he gave the hoppers something to do, and distributed the money around in a way that he deemed fair. He is Colvin's right hand on Hamsterdam, and his main job in Hamstersdam is to keep the peace, make sure there is no violence, and that the business is orderly without complication, and I think Carver wanted to put his best foot forward on that front out of loyalty for Colvin... or better yet... not just loyalty, but also because he doesn't want to let Colvin down. I think he genuinely wants to hear "good job" from Colvin. Throughout their conversations in season 3 there are many instances where you can see that Carver just wants to impress Colvin and make a good impression on him, which I think is what makes Colvin's speech to him this past episode land harder for Carver, knowing he was doing all of this legwork to make Hamsterdam work, but he still wasn't being the police that Bunny could admire or respect. I think it's a wake up call for Carver, harking back even to what Daniels once told him, that he would have to decide if it's going to be him or the work.

I need episode 11

🤣 People's lack of a sense of humor is the new pandemic.

Orr Malus

My third rewatch of the show and I'm seeing Rawls for the first time in the bar. HOW DID I MISS THIS

C2-H5-OH

The Rawls reveal was so damn hilarious lmao

Vicpres

Rawls is fucking hilarious.

prolifik5

Yes, UNC. Nothing but bangers. I read something where the writer George Pelecanos said the writing staff knew they were at the top of their game in Season 4.

Chidi.

Man it bugs me being a massive HxH fan and seeing people comment about it, just enjoy the reactions and wait for the ones you enjoy + if you dont watch the wire, you get the chance to watch it with them for the first time its a win win

Malik

What would be nice if they said something about when it will get uploaded.

Shivering King Banana

ah yes, it would be great if they had four pre-recorded HxH episodes that extinguish any form of community interaction and also strip away the enjoyment of people who like this series!

Komikall

Yall are so obnoxious

Nina

Another phenomenal episode. This season, like all the seasons so far really, just goes from strength to strength. The last two episodes of S3 are some of the best in the entire show. Can't wait.. At the start of the ep, that was Avon's crew taking out a couple of Marlo's boys. That's why we see Slim Charles walk in and do a gesture showing two fingers, to signify he got two of Marlo's people.

Aj

Ohh it’s NFL season around the corner already? It’s time to make some bets lol

Jack SV

90min Wire review? That's like four HxH episodes. Think about that.

Orr Malus

Great time of the year! The next 15 episodes are all great IMO!

UNC

Just realized Season four reactions will drop around the time NFL football starts 🏈 🤗 I will be plenty entertained 😀

Thomas

19:02 Wow, I'd forgotten about... THAT line of dialogue 😅 There've been several instances of *less than savoury* turns of phrase from the characters in The Wire (and more to come too!). Reminds me of Mr. Robot in a way, with the stuff Darlene would come out with. I think her and Rawls would have a very interesting argument scene were there ever a crossover episode 😂

TeaDrinker3000

It blew my mind when i first realised the Barksdale Crew were now being surrounded from all sides: Omar, Brother Mouzone, The Police, Marlo's crew.

Josef

We're on the home straight now. 🙌🏾. The last two episodes of the season are classics. Before I watch this reaction I predict you'll say the word "honestly" 14 times. 😜

Chidi.

@LM Reactions thanks! I'll probably watch it after the exam as a reward. @Josip yeah, breaks are important, but I don't wanna get too distracted or else I just lose focus lol

HenryM

i always watch this in breaks, cant study the whole day, breaks are important too

Josip

Now that you ve seen this episode , I can't wait to see if you saw the' blink and you miss it bar cameo'

fionan franklin

The girls killing it with these uploads, thanks so much! Will begin watching right away :)

TeaDrinker3000

prepare for the exam! watch this in breaks or after the exam and good luck🍀

LM Reactions

Oof I need to prepare for an exam and you drop a 1:20h wire bomb, why you gotta do me like this
