Appreciate you @Isaac means a lot to hear that. Appreciate your thoughtful posts on here and in HxH Totally agree @Gautam, really crossing my fingers… live in NC and trying to involve myself and some friends and family in local campaigning and have tried to give out water at nearby protests. Really hoping for the best

space1999

For real… just a no win situation smh

space1999

It's not just that the money isn't enough for Frank, it's also that thieving hurts the union that Frank is trying to protect. Containers being stolen hurts the shipping companies far more than a few extras being smuggled onboard does. The money Frank makes goes toward keeping his people paid and lobbying politicians to get them more work in the future. Thieves damage that by potentially scaring the ships away, and that's a risk they can't take when things are as bad as they are.

I would say Daniels watching the dogs relates not only to his situation on the work ladder but his situation with his wife too, who seems less interested in what he wants than what she thinks he 'should' do

Jay Craig

your backgrounds are a nice highlight in these discussions, space. keep it going

Isaac

I read about the Texas law in news this week. Lets hope Biden administration is able to pass a federal law for protection of workers in construction industry. That's one possible way to counter states like texas that don't protect workers right.

There is some crucial context to that scene in episode 2: Frank felt personally responsible for the death of the women by loosing them in the stacks. The quote "next time the Greek's got something breathing in them cans, I need to know it" only relates to avoiding another mistake like that (which ofc wasn't the real cause of death, as we learned later on). The smuggling, including human trafficking, went on. What Nick and Ziggy are doing on the side is on a much lower level. You can tell by the money they made it wouldn't be nearly enough for Frank. Both business relationships are going on simultaneously.

Thx a bunch! Sending good thoughts your way

Appreciate you 🙏 Know I’m long winded af but just can’t shut my mouth about things like The Wire whenever I’m discussing it, especially the ways it ties into current topics lol

EDIT BELOW: Why don't the dock workers (or other blue collar workers who are severely underpaid) look for other jobs? This a question that has a lot of depth to it. It does seem just straight up illogical that someone would work a job with no guaranteed pay or less than adequate pay They do mention in the first or second episode that some number of former dock workers have left and we’re shown that remaining employees are being promised better more consistent wages by Frank In this specific case having a union that you are familiar with and trust to look out for your best interests in capitalist America that ALSO gives you money under the table when things are bad is a huge deal. Employers across the US are predatory in a number of ways, hours and pay and overtime and maternity/paternity leave are all things corporations here actively fight against. My mom (who was the first person in her family to go to college) had no choice but to work within 3 weeks of giving birth to me even though she worked a half decent research job at a university Even recently we see companies like Starbucks firing employees who strike for higher wages or attempt to form unions to fight for their rights. Basic rights for workers just aren’t guaranteed Also just this past week the governor of Texas approved a law that will ELIMINATE MANDATED WATER BREAKS for construction workers. All of this during the biggest heat wave in American history where heat related deaths are happening more than ever. You can trust unions to a degree to fight for you when laws like this are passed locally... https://truthout.org/articles/abbott-signs-bill-axing-construction-workers-water-breaks-amid-record-heat/#:~:text=Far%20right%20Gov.,temperatures%20are%20hitting%20record%20highs. To add onto this a large percentage of blue collar workers haven't received education past Highschool or even finished Highschool (below is a recent 2017 study, I imagine in 2004 when this show took place even less blue collar workers had passed Highschool at all). Many people leave Highschool early to work to support their families and just end up stuck in these kinds of jobs. Have personally had many friends and family members who gave up on education to support family at as young of an age as 15 https://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2017/educational-attainment-of-the-labor-force/home.htm On top of that the population of low wage workers in the US is primarily comprised of minority groups, many of whom are poor and uneducated. Black, Hispanic and even Italian and Polish Americans just don't have the degree of wealth most Americans do. They’re significantly less likely to have family who generations back owned or created businesses and often don’t have family who have pursued higher education or earned any kind of degree. Education just seems unapproachable and too expensive. Once they’ve fallen into these jobs a lot of these people feel they have no other option and are just pigeon-holed into whatever work they can get. Might as well get a job with people of your same ethnic group/family who you’ve gone to church with your whole life (religious community is a HUGE deal for lots of these minority groups as we see with Valcheck and Sobatka and their feud over the stained glass window). Better yet, a job that you and people that you’re close with are incredibly familiar with that maybe even paid for your home growing up when housing was more affordable. EDIT: Better to work the docks that you probably live near (moving often isn’t an affordable option) and have had training for than to find a crappy nighttime janitorial job or to pay to receive new training (or to go to lengths to find a decent apprenticeship) for other prominent blue collar jobs like mechanical work or construction work that often require travel which leads to further expenses. Worst of all is to become trapped in something like the fast food industry where you’ll likely be exploited. Plus if you’ve already worked certain blue collar jobs (often Union represented jobs) for long enough you can receive a retirement pension. It just makes sense especially if you're as young as Nick or even Dee who had children before they turned 19 and need to stay close to family There's a lot more to this that The Wire has already touched on at least a little (struggles relating to substance abuse/crime/affordable housing/health care) and things that it will explore in the future (including the failures of public education, prison rehabilitation, minority representation in government, as well as the failings of the two party system and how that ties into local government legislation and budget allocation) Quick side note: Love the little details and metaphors sprinkled throughout the show. Daniels watching the dog show ties into the hoops he has to run through and the dance he has to play to have any kind of decent future in his field which is upsetting to say the least. A little on the nose but idc lol

space1999

Oh ok that makes sense. That’s hella different then most channels but I get it now

Jordan
