Just entered patreon and watched this one. I don't know if anyone mantioned it yet, but apparently the blue/purple light that tyrell sees is a nod to tech people. bc that's the color of the 'windows screen of death', or 'VMware’s screen of death'. Something like that. So yeah, you can make your own conclusions.

Jjj.

Yep! The first time I saw this I had recently just finished Sopranos on my own for the first time and was like "omg, this is EXACTLY that episode." Definitely a great homage imo.

Ron B

You girls need a new tv, you cant see any dark scene lol

Pulp

I agree. I suspect if S1 of the show were produced in 2023 rather than 2015 the subtext (Mr Robot literally calls it this) would be more text. It could have injected some really juicy interesting stuff in the show to have Elliot be straight and Mr Robot be gay or bi and genuinely romantically interested in Tyrell. It would have been tough to navigate but I think they navigated the trans stuff quite well, and based off my research some years back I believe different alters of people with DID or pluralism can have different sexualities and gender identities.

Kara

oddly mr robot has always read more queer to me than Elliot, him grinning when Tyrell is about to beat him up probably contributes to that

Myeh

Crazy memory you got there to remember that it was a recurrent dream of Dom back from Season 2! I honestly just realized when I got that point rewatching with you. If this is the end for Tyrell, it really is poetic, because his whole arc is about him trying to affirm himself as someone important, even a god, and yet he would die an unremarkable death in the biggest scheme of things, finally accepting his role as just somebody who didn't really matter that much.

I like that you pointed out that the episode was very weird because Tyrell is very weird. I believe Sam explicitly stated they wanted Tyrell's "goodbye" ep to be just as weird and surreal as the character himself

Myeh

I love this episode so much. The "Pine Barrens" episode of The Sopranos is my favourite episode of any TV show ever, so I was super excited when I first saw this and realized how much inspiration they were taking from it. A lot of shows have paid homage to The Sopranos in various ways over the years, but this is one of the best.

I agree that it served the purpose of developing the relationship between them and it did that rather well too. But the story is actually about the warden Ray and his darknet market and bringing him down. The character development is the important part but you could have had that inside of the main story. Their fighting for control and Mr. Robot helping Elliot by taking the punches and all that could have happend inside a narrative that is essential to the whole story. Instead it happens in a sub plot that is not particularly relevant. I actually loved the reveal and the interactions between Elliot and Mr. Robot. I just think that after the 5/9 hack, that we did not see, the main character should not be locked up with scarcely any contact to the rest of the cast and story. And have half a season of sub plot instead of being the engine of the main story. But its not that big of a deal. I love the show either way.

Slaizio

why do you think prison in season 2 was a filler? It did serve a purpose to develop Elliot/Mr Robot relationship pretty well

Oh! I didn’t remember it like that. I’ll check it…anyway it represents very well Doms fears an attitude in life.

Agitprop

Dom's colleague is the one with the dream, not her

tom

About Doms dream…when she was in China when the shooting she told a colleague about a dream she has…and it was that. Also she tells Angela in her apartment when she goes to give her advice that you have to let go…the moment you stop fighting is when you get control and survive. This is much Doms problem…she is a control freak and she has a problem letting go.

Agitprop

Nice little episode. Checking the mental state of everyone…

Agitprop

Yeah, I do agree with Tom here - I was a little confused at that too. There's a few more very "dark" scenes coming up (dark as in brightness) - and one that is almost in complete darkness so hopefully they work out their brightness issues / or potentially darken their room when watching the series to avoid natural light interference

I have not watched the reaction yet so I dont know whether you adress this or not. But I wanted to ask what do you think of Angelas death now after having seen a couple more episodes? In the beginning you two mentioned how her death affected your enjoyment of the show. Is that still the case? I think Lola mentioned that she hates it when a character dies for the motivation of another character. If the character dying is female there is even a term for it called fridging (women in refrigerators). I do not think it applies to Mr. Robot because her story was heading in that direction anyway and it influences many characters besides Elliot. But I'm curious about your opinions, maybe you can talk about that in a future discussion.

Slaizio

With the end of this episode I can talk about the three main things I dont like about this show. 1. The sudden end of Angelas story. It was probably not Sams vision to have it end this way but it is what we got and its a shame that we did not get a more complete story arc for her. 2. The end of Tyrells story arc is underwhelming and is of little importance to the main story. With him being almost a "second protagonist" at times and a driving force for the main story for half the show I expected a bit more. 3. Filler sub plots. Shayla/Vera in season 1, the prison in season 2, Joanna at times. From what I can tell most of those self contained story lines that are not directly part of the overall story are mainly there to have enough content for a season. But that is just my opinion. Fortunately the second half of season 4 more than makes up for those three points and overall the show ranks in my top 10.

Slaizio

Unpopular opinion maybe, but this is probably my least favorite episode of the season. ROT 13 season spoilers: Pybfr frpbaq vf rvgure gra be gjryir.

tom

I know the spam about fixing your brightness must be getting annoying but Tyrell definitely didn't 'kick' him, idk how you saw that haha

tom

Hey, so here's the suggestion that may sound completely out of left field but you ladies are obviously into all different kinds of music - have you ever considered doing reactions to music albums? The reason I'm asking is because Lana del Rey's new album is coming out next week, and based on the few singles already released promises to be a serious contender for album of the year. She's a great storyteller and it feels like her music is right up your alley, so maybe it's something you could consider doing a reaction to :p

Andrew

Tyrell had a hammer in his hand if I remember correctly, pro tip: never get hit in the head with a simple hammer, skulls be pretty fragile only takes one blow.

hrcaffee

I don't see anything spoilery about it myself, don't quite understand how you're connecting this to a spoiler?

Dustywood

Another great reaction! Definitely a "different" episode but I love the vibe. One thing I appreciated this time through was the cinematography - some of the shots were so beautiful I had to pause the sync lmao. I've found these reactions have helped me focus a lot more on that, maybe cuz I've watched through so many times, maybe cuz the discussion helps focus me on visuals, not sure. Your discussion on Tyrell is funny and how a lot of people think imo. He is a complex character but I think it's dope he chooses to wander off into the woods after being shot just to give Elliot the chance of keeping going. It's an incredibly selfless move for a character who was motivated by selfishness in so many scenes we watched him in. He is probably (as Elliot observes) the only person on the planet who likes (loves) "Elliot" - Elliot AND Mr Robot. One of my few criticisms of this (imo brilliant, 10/10) show is that they didn't codify the relationship between Tyrell and Mr Robot more. I think it would have been more interesting to make the subtext text. I love that we get more insight into how Darlene and Elliot feel about each other. Their relationship is deeply complex and relatable to a lot of people I think. It's interesting to see them process the trauma of their shared upbringing in their own ways. This show is, if nothing else, an excellent advert for 'seeing a good therapist'.

Kara

Of course :)

Dominic Logan

I consider this a spoiler by implication fyi - you're spoiling that something doesn't happen in the rest of the episodes by omission / implication

Kara

Someone had to say it, thanks for being the one

Kara

I hope you girls can make a video about top 10 characters and shows or a tier list that would be awesome. No pressure tho that’s only if you have time :)

Jay

Ahh, good, because I have always wondered about this as I've never understood Tyrell's final death scene - was hoping to hear some theories on it from here. I'll await the finale

Dustywood

Tobias literally steals this episode, I just love the part after Darlene spills her heart out and he's just like "Okay....." Probably one of my favourite random "NPC like" side characters of the show.

Dustywood

Ah yes. The Halloween episode with our favourite Santa, Tobias.

Prateek Mishra

Dom told Angela about the dream sequence in this episode back in season 2 episode 9: "I had this dream, which if you know me is pretty rare. It was good at first, exciting. There was this beautiful woman, sexy even, but then man did it go downhill fast. By the end I was being choked under water. In that dream I had, when I was being drowned, it was when I stopped fighting it. When I finally let go and stopped struggling so much...that’s when I survived."

Dominic Logan

when you've finished the show there are great discussions on reddit about possible meanings of the blue light at the end of this episode. but avoid for now in case of other spoilers

Molly C

So paranoid, it's kinda funny though :) This episode aired a couple of days before Halloween - it's a bunch of short horror stories I guess, more subtle than a Simpsons Halloween special though, and it does further the plot but yeah, you called it. I'd be more concerned about CO2 poisoning with that many candles lol. Just don't expect me to explain the end because I have *no clue* to this day, though my guess is it's either some Nordic thing about death I'm not familiar with or metaphorical in some way.. By the way he smashed him in the head with a very large hammer, which to be fair you'd usually expect to kill somebody -- but you should, y'know, check? Also yeah, Darlene and Dom need a therapist more than Elliot ever has :)

Martin Nicholls

easily one of the most surreal eps of the series, it's worth noting that the dream Dom has she actually describes exactly to Angela back in season 2. "It was when I stopped struggling that I survived" this was an intentionally surreal episode, a lot of season 4 eps intentionally have different tones and a lot of varied interactions. I very much enjoy "Elliot and Tyrell in the woods" the episode, and something about Tyrell of all characters being the only one to have time to come to terms and accept his presumed death on his own terms tickles me
