this one doesn't work anymore apparently

Come back in 2 years after they're caught up on HxH xD

Camzeee

I think so too. Let's be surprised.

But very important: If you don't want to get spoiled, stay far away from Wikipedia entries or other historical info. It's a bit strange to be spoiled because you read English history or the background behind the naming of Bluetooth. That's why I also like to write such a comment, so that you have the relation to the history without having this risk of spoilers. That's how I managed to spoil myself. And I'm probably not the only one considering this meme: https://www.reddit.com/r/VinlandSaga/comments/neef3z/spoilerless_viking_history_is_whack_af/

Robert H.

@A Oh, but I had commented on something for Thorkell back in December. Here: Thorkell the Tall, commander-in-chief of the Jomsvikings and the legendary fortress of Jomsborg, really took part in the Battle of Hjörungavágr in 986. (Episode 1) But he did not switch to the English side at that time because it allowed him to fight better battles, but because the Archbishop of Canterbury, an important hostage of his, who he obtained during his battles in the war against England, was killed against his will by his subordinates. Disappointed by the Archbishop's murder and sensing that he was losing control of his men, Thorkell and several other loyalists defected and took 45 Viking ships with them. He and his men then entered the service of the English king Æthelred the Unready as mercenaries, for whom they fought against the invasion of the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard and his son Cnut in 1013. In general, he emerges from the story as an incredibly successful and strong warrior who fought in hundreds of battles and still did not die. He was considered a monster on the battlefield, and with a height of over 2.15m, he was a real giant at that time. Reading his Wikipedia entry is extremely reminiscent of his portrayal in the anime. Especially the statement "he was too powerful a man to be made an enemy of" was really put down. Nevertheless, this one is also extremely spoilerish, because the author is strongly oriented towards the true history. For example, I know when and how Thorkell dies, which might take a bit of the fun out of watching the anime or reading the manga.

wow i read it and damn idk how i feel about the changes. I know mappa has moved around certain dialogue with aot. I think they will bring that Einar line back around because it seems pretty important to their relationship.

Mitchell Hall

I never realized that. Very cool indeed.

You guys have a lot of shows on your plate right now, so I understand you will need to finish a couple of shows before adding new ones. I just wanted to recommend Spy x Family for the future. You have probably heard of it, it's quite popular atm. I think it would be the perfect show to balance things out. It is one of the most wholesome and funny animes right now and it would be like medicine for your hearts after it's been properly abused by Vinland and AOT coming around the corner. As a long time viewer, I'm confident in saying it's definitely in your taste too. You would love all the characters right from the beginning. :)

Nemo

such a great, non-spoilery background comment. and realizing Thorkell the Tall is a real historical figure that did defect is interesting.

Personally, though, the pacing in the anime is also a bit too slow. But maybe it's because I read through the whole arc that season 2 will tell in the 24 episodes in 3-4 hours :D I also made the mistake of breaking my Vinland Saga rule of not reading an arc until it's done. So the other day I read from chapter 166 to the latest chapter and now waiting every month to read the next 20 pages is killing me. Whereas I also have to say that I think it's good that Yukimura is taking care of his health and doesn't want to suffer burnout or from other illnesses, and therefore doesn't feel compelled to publish 40+ pages every month like Isayama did. To speak of Hunter x Hunter author Togashi. He has published only 10 chapters in the last 4 years because he can no longer sit due to his back and hip problems.

Robert H.

What I can say about this is that the anime with episode 4 has changed the dialog and scenes compared to the manga Chapter 60 significantly. On Reddit, some manga readers have found this to be good, some bad. I found it interesting because I now have two adaptations for this part of the story, and both have their own peculiarities. And for those who might want to read it yet: https://ww2.readvinlandsaga.com/chapter/vinland-saga-chapter-60/

Twin-Engine is a great producer. I mean, they gave Mappa (former WIT staff) as much time as they needed, which means now we're going to get a new episode for the next 24 weeks and end up at Chapter 99/100 or Chapter 108. In addition, the manga author has pushed hard to get the episodes on a major streaming platform worldwide because he has many fans internationally. On Twitter, he responds to and writes with fans almost daily. Pony-Canyon and Kondansha, on the other hand, run Attack on Titan like a money printing machine. So we only know since a few days that Attack on Titan will return in March under the title "Attack on Titan The Final Season The Final Part - Part 1". And yes, PART 1, because the animators couldn't animate everything after more than a year (the final one is really going to be huge animation-wise), and then instead of just putting the start of Final Season Part 3 in the fall, they're releasing Part 1 next month and Part 2 at the end of the year. Cutting a "one-third of a season" in half with about 8 episodes (160 minutes running time) has never been seen before either, as far as I know.

It's good to be back. It had already become a small ritual to see the reaction to a show on Patreon.

Robert H.

yoooo the real king is back

Friend

they watched it after the ending

Nice to be back for February. And now that you've reached the second season and left the prologue behind: A little history lesson. Sweyn Forkbeard (Sveinn Haraldsson; 17 April 963 – 3 February 1014) was King of Denmark from 986 to 1014, also at times King of the English and King of Norway. He was the father of Harald, Cnut and ******. In the mid-980s, Sweyn revolted against his father, Harald Bluetooth, and seized the throne. Harald was driven into exile and died shortly afterwards in November 986 or 987. In 1000, with the allegiance of Trondejarl and Eric of Lade, Sweyn ruled most of Norway. Sweyn started raids against England during 1002–1005, 1006–1007 and 1009–1012 to avenge the St. Brice's Day massacre of England's Danish inhabitants ordered by English King Æthelred the Unready in 1002. The main motivation for the raids was more likely the prospect of revenue. In 1013, he is reported to have personally led his forces in a full-scale invasion of England. Most of the territories immediately submitted and bowed to King Sweyn. Only London remained to be conquered in order to control England completely. But the Londoners put up a strong resistance, because King Æthelred and Thorkell the Tall, a Viking leader who had defected to Æthelred, personally held their ground against him in London itself. Sweyn then went west to Bath, where the western thanes submitted to him. The Londoners then followed suit, fearing Sweyn's revenge if they resisted any longer. On Christmas Day 1013 Sweyn was declared King of England. Based in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, Sweyn began to organise his vast new kingdom, but he died there on 3 February 1014, having ruled England for only five weeks. Sweyn's cause of death is unknown. Some theorise that he was killed, whereas other sources say he died after falling off a horse (possibly according to the proverb: fallen off a high horse?). Hardly anything is known for sure of Cnut's life until the year he was part of a Scandinavian force under his father, King Sweyn, in his invasion of England in summer 1013. In a Knútsdrápa by the skald Óttarr svarti, there is a statement that Cnut was "of no great age" when he first went to war. If the skald's poetic verse references Sweyn's conquest of England in 1013–14, it suggest a birth date in 995-1000. There is a passage of the Encomiast with a reference to the force Cnut led in a battle shortly after his Coronation. It says all the Vikings were of "mature age" under Cnut "the king". A description of Cnut appears in the 13th-century Icelandic Knýtlinga saga: "Knut was exceptionally tall and strong, and the handsomest of men, all except for his nose, that was thin, high-set, and rather hooked. He had a fair complexion and a fine, thick head of hair. His eyes were better than those of other men, being both more keener-sighted and handsome." Almost nothing is known about Thorfinn's youth. The narrative in the anime is completely fictional. Askeladd's character is based on various sagas, but is ultimately completely fictional. He is said to be an illegitimate son of Olaf Höskuldsson, who really existed. His death caused a number of revenge-killings, as in the tale of Askeladds.

@Grifis i completely i agree. i loved this arc when i read it, that's why it surprised me to see so many people complaining about it

sand_fl

after this season Thorfinn will become your favorite character, trust me.

Friend

@Fish --- Did they watch it at the end? I haven't had a chance to watch their entire reaction yet, but they were literally looking away during the opening...

Merfhew

I think anyone who complains about this arc just because there isn't much action doesn't deserve to read Vinland saga, because they don't understand anything about storytelling and character development...

Friend

Also i just watched episode 4 and freaking cried my eyes out wow i cant wait for you guys to catch up and experience this emotional ride and 180 that vinland is taking us on

Mitchell Hall

when i read it and was like a year ago modt of the comments were about people complaining about the pacing and lack of action. they wanted s1 all over again. i'm glad people appreciate it more now. but at least while i was reading most of the feedback i read was bad.

sand_fl

wait, what? I don't think there are people who hate this part of the story...

Friend

I think the reason I looked away was to prevent spoilers from the video.

yamada

Author Makoto Yukimura's previous work is Planetes. It is based on the same theme of "love" as Vinland Saga, and has been adapted into an anime. If you are interested, please take a look.

As a manga reader for both Aot and Vinland saga Eren Jaeger And Thorfinn are my favorite charcters in any show I’ve ever watched Walter white comes after them as well, they are incredible characters.

Jay

they did watch it...

Fish Smell Bad

Eh I wouldn’t say many hated it. I think the majority still liked it/loved it. At least these days.

Merfhew

timeskip is about 16 months feb 1014: season 1 finale june 1015: einar arrives on the farm

Sebastian

2 years have pass. Thorfinn is 19 and Einar 20. By the way the more u look at Thorfinn, the more he looks like his father.

Barnnlove

When Einar's mother told him to run away, I remembered Eren's mother Karla.

itoto

Twin Engine is the producer of Vinland Saga (and any anime with the bike intro). Whichever animation studio partners with them uses the intro but with their logo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_Engine_(company)

Lamont Cranston

you guys can watch opening and ending if you want jsyk

Mitchell Hall

I'm not 100% sure, but it was 1014 at the end of season one, and I believe it's been almost 2 years? Thorfinn should be 19 years old, close to 20, and Einer should be 20 at the moment. Thorfinn does look pretty rough for 19, but he has been through a lot.

ArtficialFlvrz

🎵oh river take me out, take me out to the unknown 🎵

Daniel Molina

So happy you got to the 2nd season so quickly! This is one of my favorite arcs in all of anime/manga ❤️

Large McDonald’s Sprite

They use the Wit intro but with Mappa's logo because after season 1 the show got handed over to Mappa but the original staff stayed with the project. So it's basically still Wit animating it lol.

Fish Smell Bad

Something that most people miss in the opening is that when Canute's scar opens up it takes the shape of king Sweyn's eye. So fucking cool.

Fish Smell Bad

Im pretty sure they use the same motorcycle intro because WIT got absorbed into Mappa, and the same people that worked on season 1 are working on season 2

Malik

this is a surprise, i thought this was coming tomorrow. i was about to go to sleep but guess i'll just sleep less tonight. i'm so exited for this arc. many readers hated it but i'm sure you will love it.

sand_fl

Peakland Saga is back!!

Wohooo!
