Rage, Rage Until the Dying of the Light

  There are three types of people on my block list:

* Those who hate feminists.

* Those who hate men.

* Those who hate everyone.

Scratch that. There is one type of person on my block list: Fundamentalists.

When my block list was young, I thought hate groups were the problem. Then my block list grew up, and I thought men’s rights activists were the problem. Then, I thought a particular kind of internet feminism was. Essentially, I got way too fundamentalist about the fundamentalists on my block list, so I couldn’t see how fundamentalist I was being. This is not a complicated post, I swear. Here. Have a cupcake. It’s iced with glittery meta-ness.

Fundamentalists are too literal-minded to see nuance. The problem with black and white thinking is that it’s never true. My hate group blockees are the best example because they hate everyone. That renders their opinions about anyone completely obsolete because they're clearly indiscriminate. It’s exactly the same with the MRAs on my list: they’re incapable of hearing anything to do with the female experience, which makes their viewpoint shallow and unconsidered. They think in shades of black, so they do little beyond rage… And rage and rage and rage.

If you’re furious at everyone, you are your own crappy press. It’s intensely difficult to look beyond others’ hate and rage, but amazingly tempting to hate and rage in response to it. The more you rant, the harder it becomes for people to take your causes seriously.

Of course, I’m completely blameless when it comes to such things. ahem Now pass me those meta-cupcakes.
