2024-05-07 22:21:07 +0000 UTCDunno, I've only been in the construction biz for 40 years. Generally, a person has to go with what they feel most comfortable with, and not "what everyone else does." You are likely going to have more electric heat than cooling. Which suggests a drying effect to the inside. Which would suggest impermeable to outside. And to use an oil or lacquer based (permeable) paint for the interior. Note, "suggests." Not even IRC requires so very much.

I'm a 7th generation carpenter (although I'm a finish guy and cabinetmaker) who dabbles (with moderate success) in mechanical work. It's like we swapped roles. I've been fighting with a cam/crank correlation code on a Jetta, you've been fighting with stairs. Both could end badly if done wrong.... I'll freely admit I have no idea about the nuances of building code in the US Midwest, if you do run into one of those "So now do I finish this" situations, feel free to reach out. You're way outside of my normal service area, so I don't mind giving some free advice. Now, if you were in my area....I might cut you a deal on my shop rate.

2024-05-05 23:22:34 +0000 UTCWes, since you have the plasma table you can do your railing from metal. Cut the plates that attach to the bottom on the langmuir and use 2x2 sq tube. You could also use it for the post and save a couple inches. Would be stronger, lighter, etc, etc. Prob faster too.

2024-05-05 21:10:22 +0000 UTCLooking great! Plywood was around before the 50's. My home was built from materials salvaged from the 'Liberty Ship' shipyards in South Portland Maine. The shipyard was active from 1941 to 1945. The walls of my house are sheathed in a marine-grade plywood that was used in the 'mold lofts'. 3/4" and incredibly strong.

2024-05-05 18:33:01 +0000 UTCThere will be no appeasing the VB nutters. Your region is "in between" per the various Building Science definitions of Hot/Cold climate. In majority heating, the VB goes to the inside; in majority cooling, it goes to the outside. The biggest thing is that you do not want to trap moisture between two impermeable planes. And most latex paint is 0 perm.

Whether or not his 40-plus year's experience is worth noting is a personal decision.

Those stairs are as well built as the ones on my US$53 million project in Boston I was visiting just on Wednesday.

If you want a little extra load bearing insurance, you can notch the posts on your landings so the load goes through the post instead of the nails. Place is going to look really great with those big bay windows when you're done!

2024-05-05 16:25:50 +0000 UTCNice work, I think as long as your concrete does not sweat when you open the garage doors in the summer you probably have all the vapor barrier you need. Mini splits are great, most of them are DIY for sure, your automotive gauges and vacuum pump will be all the tools you need to install one, even easier with the mr cool style precharged lineset, but you then have to do something with the excess lines, easier to get a neater installation cutting the tubing to length and vacuuming it.

2024-05-05 16:11:47 +0000 UTCIn 2009 I built a standalone garage on my property and the hoops I had to jump through to get it done was just unreal and don't bring up the right of way that caused me to have to rework the foundation for the overhead electrical power wires. So, I can feel your pain even today.

2024-05-05 15:58:44 +0000 UTCA few years back, I replaced the main electrical panel of my parents cottage up north, and when I was done I had one circuit for some ceiling lights that no longer worked. Took me awhile to figure out what the hell I'd done wrong. Finally, I found that I hadn't done anything wrong, but that whoever did the wiring in the first place apparently ran the wire a few feet too short. So they "fixed it" by running a short run between the panel and the wire that was too short, and then just touched them together, taped it with some electrical tape, and called it good. It worked for a few decades I'd guess, but it was pretty scary. No wire nuts, nothing but two wires just touching and some old tape. Replaced that entire run in a hurry and was thankful it hadn't burned the place down over all that time.

My house was built in 1923 and I have the same staircase you do, other than the newel post being a little more ornate. They didn't have power tools, but they really didn't need them...staircase components were bought out of catalogs ready to install so they just needed to assemble them and scribe/tweak as-needed

I've also acquired the knowledge of which jobs I can do, but choose to hire someone else to do instead. Drywall work is one of the latter.
