We got a new puppy recently. She’s a mixed mutt, mostly black, extra medium & a total sweetheart. Our first dog Dee Dee is getting old & slowing down. Having to deal with a puppy is breathing new life into her. She’s having to play fight, compete for attention & food even. When old humans are isolated they deteriorate faster. I could see the same thing happening with my dog. The first day of Lolo (our new dog) arriving she was obviously not into having the order disturbed. She seemed resistant to having to share her space. But after a couple days passed, she quickly got into the swing of things & now it feels like having a puppy around was necessary. If you think about entropy, or the tendency towards the degradation & disintegration of matter & energy takes place when you don’t have that youthful energy kicking up the piles of dead leaves & cobwebs that have accumulated over time. This is why I try to listen to my kids & young people in general. Yes, they are ignorant, unwise, impetuous, but those are characteristics in most young people. Sometimes there are real gems in what they say or notice & it’s helpful to remember that a week for a kid can be a long time, even if a year for me seems to go by quickly. It comes down to the thing I’m always advocating for. Keeping balance. You can’t help but look out of your same eyes & be who you are, but you can listen to other people with other opinions than your own. I know there is some wisdom to avoiding the endless opinions & bad-faith actors that everyone is confronted with on the internet daily, but there is more wisdom to picking a few other voices that are different than your own to get a fully rounded view of things.

I work custodial at an elementary school. If you ever want to get back in touch with real life, talk to a kindergartener or a 1st grader. They're a touchstone back to what's important and real and fun.
