Upon returning home from a visit to her Brother’s Family in San Francisco & having to read their saccharine books to their kids & watch their TV, Katie thanked me for my dogged watch over the media that came into our home, the movies we watched, the books we read. Most people understand this in a protective, censorious way, but that was never my intention. I hold fast that certain cultural products are the equivalent of junk food for the mind & spirit & that to grow into a healthy human you need to perceive media in a similar manner as one would view food. For me you don’t want to build a house with subpar elements & choosing the bricks you need to build things out of carefully instead of going with the ones that are just designed to be consumed seems like a no brainer. I’m sure someone will figure out a way to communicate this more succinctly & clearly to more people in the future, but for now this is where I’m at. You should know what these various junk foods & junk media taste like, but you should know that they are just designed to be consumed & their capabilities for healthy building blocks are next to none
