Things have been reduced to a mush, a slime, an ooze. The nature of phones making everyone have access to this highly relative infinite world in a way that they weren’t able to before is like pouring acid on everyone’s mind, disintegrating everything. In some ways this is great, this has been a world in which GOBLINKO has been able to raise its head & become successful, while at the same time there has just been too much liquidity so that the foundations of everything are shaky. I dealt with this a long time ago when I was working at the Oakland Public Library in my early twenties. I read constantly, everything, challenging my beliefs became a thrill. I read old newspapers & saw the media’s response to things like World War II & the 1928 Stock Market crash when they were happening, before they got assimilated into a tidy historical narrative. This sort of mind expansion/dissolution is something that people should go through with a college education. Instead they are getting it 24-7, from a variety of good & bad actors, with some of the stupidest & smartest things ever made. Most people don’t have the discipline to have their basic understanding or even intuition of the world survive this acidic wave of electronic entertainment without their mind turning to mush. Structural understandings of things like history, culture & complex systems are being exchanged for emotional responses & other dopamine stimulation. These reactions are very real, but they are nothing to build society on.
