I read the Tao Te Ching when I was 14 or so & it had a huge impact on me. Even though I was devoted to the Punk world of agitation & obnoxiousness I could tell that Taoism spoke to me on a deeper, more profound level. At the time I had no spiritual grounding or practice so I applied the general philosophy to the things around me. Particularly politics. Everyone around me was always trying to emphasize the “this side” version of politics & even though I would be swept up in the cultural tide of the left/right split (everyone around me some shade of leftist, still are), I couldn’t be part of their game for very long until my brain would start turning on me. I can’t do it. I understand that politics are a system that overlays on top of & alters reality. Much like the stock market. I also know how these systems/games are created by others in an attempt to control & profit from reality as much as they can. Behind these systems are people like you & me, & when they take a moment to disengage from the game which is constantly telling them it is the end of the world if the other side wins, they can think straight. I saw through the doomsday scenarios a long time ago, there is no end of the world. Change is constant. No one can determine the future. Everyone thinks they are the good guys, everyone thinks the other side is the bad guys.
