[DEVBLOG#308] Landmarks Expanded, Part 1

Hey everyone and welcome to a development blog for Vanilla Landmarks Expanded. It is finally time I can shed some more light onto it!

RimWorld: Odyssey has introduced a phenomenal concept of landmarks. They are essentially like genes, but on map tiles. Every map tile can have several mutators that together form a sort of landmark. It's also possible for those mutators to exist separately, without a landmark too, to improve map generation and exploration ability!

In Vanilla Landmarks Expanded, we naturally want to make the exploration aspect and the world generation aspects better. We attempt to do this by adding a bigger variety of locations, so that every time you play, you will encounter something new, something unique.

Firstly, we focus on natural landmarks - things that mother Nature herself can create. In later installments, we will focus on man-made landmarks, such as abandoned cities and so on. But first - actual natural terrain!

Right now I have commissioned a new hero image for the mod to beautify the preview image (it will take a week or something for the hero image to be ready).

The content of the mod is more or less finished, and it's been undergoing testing for a week and a half now. This means it's time for infographics.

For the infographic style, I tried to recreate the Google Maps UI, since it fits, I think. So far I've only done a handful of infographics but I'm excited to share them with you!

In total, the mod offers 59 unique landmarks you can explore. Each landmark has one or several new mutators too! To put it into comparison, the base game only has 41 landmarks - which means in total, the number will be a beautiful one hundred.

As for other news, Vanilla Furniture Expanded - Security is release ready and will be out tomorrow! We are encountering small delays in some of our development, as one of our best programmers is suffering constant power outages in Ukraine, so things may take slightly longer, but the release for Security is prepped and ready for me to press the big green button!

We're also continuing the development of Vanilla Weapons Expanded remake, which will be entering testing soon. I'm also constantly designing Chapter 2 of Vanilla Gravships Expanded, but recently I have made a decision to push some content forward and release an update for Vanilla Gravships Expanded - Chapter 1! I need those compact high-tech research benches!

Let me know how you guys and gals are doing, and I will be back tomorrow with a mod release post!

That is not a bug, it was an intentional decision!

Hi beautiful expansion really excited about this however I do have one question does your team plan to also fix to the eltex (from the Empire expansion) spawning in mineral rich deposits in landmarks expanded or whenever? It's not game breaking just overpowered however any ore in mineral rich deposits are op. What's your stance on that if I can ask.

Rtepper

Same as any other landmarks: it’s an opportunity to see something new while mining local resources!

Oskar Potocki

Everything has some functionality. Cover, beauty, resource, you name it. We didn’t however go too deep: coral is just a hard to remove obstruction

Oskar Potocki

Really looking forward to the man made landmarks. Do the natural ones have any incentive to visit? Like minerals. I really enjoyed going to the chem fuel factories and looting them. It expands the world so much.

Jordan Blackmon

Hey Oskar, will this include any new practical tiles (coral seems new?) or is everything aesthetic?

anonymoose

Loving these, especially the "resurgent Caldera" and "crater lake" variants. These will surely spice up the map in the future :) (the landmark system really seems to be the best addition of Odyssey, ain't it ^^) Also, hyped for VFE Security release, hope that programmer in Ukraine is ok though

Saakyra

How does Odyssey DLC? We just use the same landmarks system introduced in the DLC

Oskar Potocki

How does this work with the Geological Landforms mod?

WarCookie

Pushing forward doesn’t mean immediate release. It won’t even be worked on until second half of February

Oskar Potocki

....wait you are pushign an update for Gravships expanded...ME AND NOOBERT JUST GOT DONE MAKING THE SCRIPT FOR THAT VIDEO LOL LOL LOL But yeah heres hoping for more compact furniture

BrenTenkage's Gaming

These look very cool and I'm excited to give the mod a try once it's out. Best wishes to your programmer.

Andrew Lewandowski

Oh man made landmarks will be a separate mod, likely released in the second half of this year!

Oskar Potocki

Excited to hear about man-made landmarks also being a part of this mod! Anything that fleshes out the over world by making it more than just icons on different biomes takes Rimworld further in the direction of being an actual world. Just need something official-ish to beef up NPC faction behavior (RIP Diplomacy Expanded) and this would truly be my forever game. Well that and I guess multiplayer so I don’t completely abandon my friends haha!

Marco Antonio Magallon

These look really cool, especially the salt flats.

Filleis

You and me both. Compact 1x1 multianalyzer also coming. Oh, and mech rechargers. And biosculpter pod.

Oskar Potocki

Looks great, always glad to see some more map diversity to shake things up wrt Odyssy. Also never been happier to read anything than I was about the compact research bench, I was just thinking how much I needed one of those earlier.
