[DEVBLOG#281] The Advent Calendar

Hello everyone and welcome to a little breakdown of a mod that will release very, very soon.

Vanilla Christmas Expanded is a cheeky festive mod that will bring the festive spirit to your RimWorld colony. While I recommend playing with this mod only during the festive period, it's very much possible for you to play with it all year long. The mod will introduce a lot of festive-related content, including festive trees, candy crackers and more!

We will be releasing daily updates to this mod throughout December, so every day until the 24th of December you can expect some new content.

I suspect the mod will release tomorrow, so I have prepared content for the first 8 days of the festive season already, and you will receive all this content immediately when the mod releases.

What will come in the future is a secret, so make sure to check back on the mod every day!

Now, I'd like to ask you for ideas. I know you come from all around the world. How is the festive season celebrated where you are? What would you add to the mod to make it feel even more festive?

Comment down below, and I can't wait to show you the mod tomorrow!

My familys christmas tradition is a drunken uncle and a social fight?

Frank Cotton

The ritual could produce one of the ingredients.

Stephan Schany

I am glad you like them. Dimitry Minchenkov has a good idea for the implementation of the snowballs. And there is an igloo mod on steam. Another idea would be snowmen as buildable workers, based on Android Tiers, or a Christmas version of the Gauranlen Tree, which you decorate instead of prune (same mechanics, but costs Gold and does not fade) with the Dryads being various woodland animals with little hats.

Stephan Schany

Come to think of it, part of it was making a new one each year. Lots of things could probably have their creation tied to an annual ritual.

Decorative gingerbread! Sure you can do the houses, but it can also be cooked as a hard enough biscuit that it keeps for years, in whatever sort of shape you want to. There was a drawer full of such decorations at my grandmother's house, and it made the whole lower floor smell lovely when we brought them out. I suppose it is similar to what Carolin said, although I'd also make them art pieces with quality personally. Perhaps like ambrandy?

My family in America smiles fondly at consuming a similar "Christmas Rice". Similarly made, but cinnamon instead of cherry sauce as the final thing to mix in; per family tradition it comes down the Scottish side, but who knows.

Scott

There was, 5 years ago, adding Christmas tree, decorative presents and eggnog. This one is much much bigger!

Oskar Potocki

Wasn't there Christmas themed mod from you guys before?

I was thinking about the Grinch being a raid where he tries to steal something Christmas related if possible, but I then saw and love all of the idea Stephan Schany posted. Another thought I had was a snow day festival of some kind and perhaps snowball fights for recreation, building snowmen or igloos. It would be really cute to see the children of the colony especially to be throwing snowballs at each other.

Jessica Hooten

A giant candy cane. It is both edible (when in inventory) and usable as a weapon (when equipped). Reindeer, including a super rare one with a red nose. Feed them the right items and they can fly. The red nose increases the sight radius and reveals anything invisible. A flying sleigh with a huge (10 tons) cargo capacity, but requires rare rewards to build. The Scepter of the Snow Queen, which allows to start and stop snow storms on the map at will. The Grinch, who steals things but can be befriended. Is a rare xenohuman race. Christmas Elves, who are great at Social and Crafting but awful at fighting. Slight bonus to Animals and Artistic as well.

Stephan Schany

How about instead of a man in black event, a Jolly man in Red...with 20's in all Stats

BrenTenkage's Gaming

Add a gigantic wood monster, Caga Tio, who consumes pretty much anything as food. Has a bubble shield to block ranged attacks - it must be melee'd to defeat and it bleeds refined versions of the things it consumes (or just restores their durability or increases quality). Every time a tree is felled, there's a chance that instead of dropping wood, it instead spawns a lesser Caga Tio that goes manhunter after a few moments.

Zachery Gaskins

You could always borrow from the 12 days of Christmas song and toss things in like several geese-a-laying arriving on the map and leaving a few dozen fertilized eggs on the ground.

Steven

a snow event!!

Frog

In Denmark, we have a tradition for eating "Rice a la mondé", a sort of rice porridge made with milk, cooled, mixed in with things like whipped cream and almond pieces, before finally served cold with heated cherry sauce. Apart from being absolutely delicious, it also contains at least one whole almond mixed in, and whoever finds it receives a special prize, most often a box of chocolates. Maybe a kind of dessert that has a chance to spawn items, an event or a hediff upon consumption? A mood boost could also accompany a positive outcome

Marius Salsbury

Snowball mittens! Weapon made on tailoring table from textile, with zero damage, but mood boost for targets, if possible, or at least festive favor.

Dimitry Minchenkov

Here in Germany, and especially in the region where I live (Erzgebirge), christmas is often the highlight of the year, especially with our christmas markets. But we also have something called Räucherkerzen and Räuchermännchen, a certain kind of christmas-y incense put in special festive holders shaped like things that smoke, like a house, stove or an old man with a pipe. I think that would fit the mod, with the incense maybe giving everyone in vicinity a small mood boost? I wish you a happy second Advent and a wonderful Christmas time!

Carolin

There was.

Oskar Potocki

Needs some Krampus. Or maybe a Grinch.

IchiroFuma

Wasnt there like an old vanilla christmas expanded mod in past, if i remember correctly?

Atem23

No mod is ever safe to remove so this is no different in that regard.

Oskar Potocki

"While I recommend playing with this mod only during the festive period, it's very much possible for you to play with it all year long." I assume this means the mod is safe to remove from a save game? Or am I being a noob? Either way, this is a welcome mod in this festive month! A nice surprise.

Jasmino

We need fireworks. Grand fireworks that will rock the sky just minutes before the start of the new year...
