[DEVBLOG#174] Vanilla Psycasts Expanded - Psycaster paths

Hey guys! Hello ladies! This will be the last development blog of 2021!

I'd like to show you all the paths your Psycaster can level up in we have so far. There will be more - I have 20 paths in total planned!

I won't go into details of all the abilities, at least not yet, but the icons should tell you all you need to know!

Remember: Your psycaster doesn't need to be specialized in one path. You can pick abilities from all the paths, meaning you can have 20 level 1 abilities if your Psycaster is level 20!

EMPATH PATH

Empath psycasts are focused on enhancing the mood of others, one way or another.

Tags: Mood, Happiness, Family, Sympathy, Joy

SKIPMASTER PATH

Skipmaster psycasts are focused on using skipgates to change the course of battle or the life of the colony.

Tags: Skip, Teleport, Movement, Chaos, Portal

CONFLAGRATOR PATH

Conflagrator path is focused on manipulating fire, heat and energy to eliminate enemies.

Tags: Fire, Heat, Orange, Temperature, Destruction, Blaze, Burn

PROTECTOR PATH

Protector path is focused on providing aid and protection to your pawns, stopping them from dying and allowing you to escape from dangerous situations unscratched.

Tags: Armor, Health, Shield, Protection, Healing, Immunity

WARLORD PATH

Warlord path is focused on upgrading the warfare capabilities of the Psycaster and psycaster alone - as all the Warlord psycasts are to an extent self-cast.

CHRONOPATH PATH

Chronopath path is focused on manipulating time, making things older, completing growth of plants, or de-aging your pawns.

ARCHOTECHIST PATH

Archotechist path is a special path locked only for Empire-based psycasters. It allows spreading insanity, using psychic shock to down any wrong-doers, and to offload neural heat to others, as well as use neural heat in combat.

NECROPATH PATH

Necropath is a path focused on distributing fear and death, whilst also gaining from death and corpses. You can resurrect fallen allies, prohibit them from dying and raise hordes of skeletons to fight for your cause.

STATICLORD PATH

Staticlord is a path focused on blasting enemies with electricity, disabling electronics and controlling the storm itself.

ARCHON PATH

Archon path is the path of a psychic leader, providing various buffs to the entire colony, but also ruling with an iron fist. It’s also a path that allows you to drain enemy psycasters and gain Psycast levels this way.

FROSTSHAPER PATH

Frostshaper is a path about manipulating the elements, particularly the cold, to your advantage. Not only you get to use the cold to freeze and slow enemies, frostshapers also gain access to many utility psycasts that either construct shelters out of ice blocks, or create cooling crystals that can be used both as a temporary fridge, and a trap.

WILDSPEAKER PATH

Wildspeaker path is a special path locked only for Tribal-based psycasters. It’s all about controlling nature and animals for defense and survival.

HARMONIST PATH

Harmonists are all about manipulating the balance of the universe. Their abilities are never a clear benefit or a drawback, and they always come with a price one way or another.

TECHNOMANCER PATH

Technomancers are masters of technology, knowledge and research, capable of using psychic energy to aid in concept exploration, but also to breathe life into small-scale constructs that can help and defend them.

Combining with other features said in the diaries, this is going to make the psycast system a very lively part of the game. Shame on Tynan for being unable to make it in the base Royalty.

This is literally one of the reasons we’re doing this mod in the first place. The entirety of the mod will run on our ability framework, and as you might now from rim effect, enemies use them!

As some paths of psycast are pure combat oriented or self-buffing, could you make the npc also uses some of the psycast? I think this would be an important feature for a vanilla-expanded experience.

Wow Oskar. You have really blown me away with this one! Been silently, patiently, desperately waiting for years for you and your team to tackle a "magic" system like this! So happy to see it happening. I also absolutely love the art! It is a departure from your usual Vanilla style, but I actually really think it is very cool for this application. Could you share any details of how it was made? I am not super familiar with AI art but I would like to learn more. Thanks for all your hard work!

While the menu backdrops don't fit the vanilla style whatsoever, this looks pretty neat. Glad you were able to overcome your personal distaste royalty enough to give psycasting appropriate attention.

The scope of psycasts covered here is huge! Any plans on having psycasters appear in other factions besides { Empire / Tribal } such as a pirate Warlord psycaster or outlander Staticlord?

Are you sure about the "CHRONOPATH PATH" naming? Don't get me wrong, I get the idea, but the final result looks and reads kind of weird.

Super hyped for the mod. Just a suggestion/concern. I feel like reviving a pawn needs to be a super exclusive or costly feature. I hope that whatever psycasts allow revive will have a crazy opportunity cost attach to it. Like sacrificing another pawn or multiple prisoners

Necropath ftw! Two questions btw, just curious feel free to ignore. Will the skeletons be controllable like pawns, and are they on a timer before dying or disappearing? Cool either way just curious as a necromancer fanatic.

Good work! Speaking of drawbacks of some abilities: Any skills that are going to improve abilities? Like lowering costs for abilities, lowering chance of bad outcome etc.
