Oh boy, this was one of those pages that surely shouldn't take long to draw. And yet. :-/
The Jansson building was inspired by this Volvo dealership I saw while biking on an errand. (I sent Barry the photo and asked what would be a good name for a Turtle City company, and he thought of naming it after Tove Jansson):
I couldn't find information about when it was built, but I liked that this building looks modern compared to most of SuperButch, but would still look kind of retro in the 1980s scenes.
I first sent Barry three possible layouts. These were the two rejects:
Barry asked if the characters could have more dynamic poses, so I drew in the background and tried a few different variations on "person gets tangled in dog leash."
Annoyingly, googling "tangled in dog leash" mostly yields pictures of dog leashes that are designed not to get tangled. So I didn't get much inspiration there. But I found some quality Basset hounds:
Once I'd drawn Lillian, Tammy, and Alicia in new poses, I didn't have room for the basketball court in the background. I also decided (at the last minute) not to shade either side of the buildings, so that the characters would stand out more. I hope all these alternate versions and redraws ended in a fun, interesting-but-not-distracting panel!
