Cars? Easy! Detailed Backgrounds? Sure - I'll give it a go! Hands? No problem!! Self portrait? Dear god no!

Really though...for some reason drawing a cartoon-y little self portrait or display pic has always been one of the hardest things to draw. As someone already predisposed to overthinking, having to draw an interpretation of myself just sends me spiraling. I analyze every bit of the process and end up just giving up! I have no idea how anyone writes first person auto bio comics. Gotta hit that sweet spot between self deprecation, likeness, and earnestness as to not come across as self aggrandizing lest you end up with some self aware Boss Baby ass smirk. Yeesh.

Anyway - I needed one for reasons so I had myself a bit of a think; are there any cartoonists that draw good self portraits? Immediately, I thought of Akira Toriyama and Hiromu Arakawa and realized that taking a sort of “avatar” approach would probably come out with better results. This is maybe the first time drawing myself didn’t send me spiraling so I guess you can call that a win.😅
