For what it's worth I went outside to see that same aurora and yeah it was more vibrant on my phone, but i have really good eyes and when i strained, i was able to see it dimly, and that subtle color across the sky was still really beautiful

Luccia Moira

Thinking about the idea of that background noise of electricity; there’s the hum of the Earth and then there’s the hum of man as a distinctly different vibration. Both are ever present yet one is uneasy in its anxious insistence.

Pear Is A Patsy

So it turns out Project Blue Beam will be delivered as an augmented reality app.

DevNull

now you must multiply that by the experience of seeing half a million people slaughtered in real time, but it doesn't show up on anybody's phone

Michael S. Judge

Had an experience last night that felt very Michael S Judge coded. Tons of people in my city posting pictures of a magnificent aurora in the sky. Bright pink and green. But to look up with your own eyes, there was hardly anything discernable. In fact I had spent the entire evening outside, but only learned of the aurora when I came in and looked at twitter, where people informed me that actually, you had to look at the sky through an iPhone. Only an iphone camera could pull those vibrant colours out of an otherwise dull and light-polluted city sky. I felt like I was going insane seeing people talk about "seeing the aurora" when none of them had seen shit but more digital images.

well i'm not MSJ but I did give this a listen and it's dope, thanks for referencing it!

Zionism is almost a brother to German imperialism. Also thanks for the links I’ve been looking for these LOL

Now that is an axe I’m happy being swung forever.

oh there's plenty more Lynch to come, as well

Michael S. Judge

Oddly, I’m recalling one of Willie Nelson’s bandmates discussing how far off from convention his phrasing would go, just to have it miraculously swing back at the last possible moment for an explosive and emotional chorus. Explosive like an atomic bomb here, in regard to just where this Lynch thing was going, and deeply felt. Magnificent, my friend. 🎁

George Quartz

condensed a serious hit here, this is what I'm here for

Daniel McVeigh

Loving the weaving of Lynch’s work in response to bigger, more elusive forms of power. Could not help but think of whale fall—when the carcass of a whale sinks to the depths of the ocean and becomes the ecosystem of many feeders—the “radiating corpse”, and the vision of the reanimated corpseform (composed only of the smaller opportunistic forms?) breaching the surface. Now that’s something to think about.

Honestly I think you can look at things like Churchill's essay on Zionism vs. Bolshevism (https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Zionism_versus_Bolshevism), Theodor Herzl's insane screeds against "mauschel" (https://shi-webfiles.s3.amazonaws.com/Havruta_2010_Issue4_StuardSchoffman.pdf , first couple pages are Zionist apologia, actual text starts on pg 5 in green) and the diplomatic/economic partnership between nascent Israel and Nazi Germany (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haavara_Agreement) and make a pretty compelling argument that Zionism has had a symbiotic and mutually reinforcing relationship with antisemitism since its inception. I've also heard versions of this argument from antizionist Hasidim like Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro and members of Neturei Karta.

Ian H

in light of your analysis of Lynch's work and its relation to the bomb, naming the Sheriff in Twin Peaks Harry S. Truman makes a lot more sense.

WILD AT HEART is an interesting case of Lynch's use of unmissable movie/culture signifiers: Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe crisscrossing the USA, which is also hell, which is also Oz, where Lula's mother is the Wicked Witch and Glenda the Good Witch is Laura Palmer; Glenn Miller and heavy metal and rockabilly, etc. The Blank Check episode on WAH, however, made some interesting observations about this. Chiefly, the scene where Sailor and Lula happen upon the grotesque car wreck, and see the girl (Sherilyn Fenn), experiencing her last moments of life, semi-lucid thanks to severe head trauma, is a scene that marks a "before and after" point for the couple. Before: almost always framed together. After: almost always shot seperately. Before: nonstop sex, positivity, listening, frank conversations. Afterward: no sex, doom and gloom, each locked in their own head, obfuscation. The way this links to your ideas about Lynch and movies, I think, and I hope I'm representing the Blank Check lads' read on the film competently - is this: the Before part of the film is an engine that's fueled by fiction and fantasy and Da Movies, Baby, while the After is all that that Sailor and Lula cannot, at long last, outrun: not just the long arm of the hired hit, but the inevitable cooling of a hotsy totsy relationship, as well as - paging Dr. Eraserhead - the total reshaping of reality that comes with parenthood (being a parent and also sharing parent-ness with another). In the Barry Gifford book, Sailor and Lula split up at the end. Lynch got notes on the script essentially saying "this ending is no good!" and he responded "I know, I don't like it either!" The result was that long walk into a dragnet of THE WARRIORS type hoodlums; Sailor takes a knockout punch, dreams of Glenda the Good Witch (Sheryl Lee, aka Laura Palmer) telling Sailor "Don't turn your back on love." After which there's the big reunion only 1990 Hollywood would wish for: he hops across a dozen or so cars to sing "Love Me Tender" to Lula as credits roll. Marilyn and Elvis, together again, forever or But no, it's something weirder than that. "Wild at heart and weird on top." The ending doesn't signal a return to their earlier fantasy, even if it seems to: they're both changed, free of some of their previous tethers, beholden to some new ones. But in a suspended state between fantasy-fueled exuberance and disappointment-bejewelled reality, they have chosen to turn their face towards the former. Looking forward to more Lynch-related commentary! I haven't watched LOST HIGHWAY since I was knee-high to a junebug, so that's on the docket for sure.

I agree. You can’t kill Hezbollah by murdering its leadership. Killing him was a big goal, I think, because he was so clear eyed and didn’t blame “the Jews” which is what Zionists want. Israel wants a full blown reactionary in charge to further their political goals and more propaganda support which may or may not happen idk. there will always be a resistance structure when you are dealing with a fascist, death cult neighbor. I just hope whatever leadership structure they have ready in place is as steady and clear eyed as Nasrallah. Although it’s honestly hard to even blame reactionaries with whatever comes next because israel is the closest thing to Nazi germany we’ve seen in modern history fully backed by the most powerful government in the world. Zionism is the biggest proponent for antisemitism in the world right now. Just fucking insanity equating Jewishness with child killing genocide. Imagine seeing your family blown to pieces by a country telling you they are “God’s chosen people” with a lobby that spends millions on politicians in the west to provide the bombs that destroy your family and your country. That’s how reactionaries are born if you don’t have any semblance of Marxism that’s been destroyed in your country by the cia/western imperialism. It’s all so fucked.

M

Yeah very unfortunately, as much as the IDF lie like they breathe, it seems true that Hezbollah haven't had contact with Hashem Safieddine since the Israeli strike "targeting him" last week. Now the "his successor" thing seems more like lily-gilding, I don't think anyone knows yet who's next up. It should be noted though that the history of "decapitation strikes" against guerilla organizations isn't exactly full of success stories. The Algerian FLN leadership, for example, got taken out repeatedly to little long-term effect.

Ian H

I was actually thinking of pivoting to becoming someone who posts on here stuff like "Mondays am I right?" in total sincerity until my cell phone explodes and takes out half of my skull

NYCM&AHole

Israel said they killed Nasrallah’s successor and then that persons successor. Obviously Israel lies about almost fucking everything but I can’t claim to know what’s going on until something official is released. The thing that made me think of Castro was when he told the Cuban people to not blame the American people for the crimes against the Cuban people. To blame western imperialism and the elites. Nasrallah said similar things. To blame American imperialism and not the Jews. I really hope whoever is their next leader/pr spokesman for Hezbollah has this type of demeanor and clear eyed view of the world. Cause like you said if not and it turns increasingly reactionary it’s gonna be really fucking bad.

M

Well that's just the thing, you see: it can be both, which leaves us somewhere uncomfortable and eerie

Michael S. Judge

The emulsion in which a film strip’s photochemistry is suspended is literally pulverized and rendered animal bones. Originally celluloid was made from dead plant matter, now it’s made from petrochemicals—either way, there’s a whole lot of actual death in every roll of film. Contra Goddard, film isn’t “truth 24 times a second,” it’s corpses at the same interval.

Heath Iverson

Last I knew, Nasrallah's successor is supposed to be his cousin, Hashem Safieddine, and the very blunt lacunar dossier on him is that he's intellectually a lot like Nasrallah, but he's much less conciliatory and not especially focused on preventing violence. Nasrallah was willing to pass on political opportunities if they meant serious killing, especially in Lebanon; apparently Safieddine is more likely to jump at such opportunities, even if they entail some serious dying

Michael S. Judge

LinkedIn is really a waste of time. Especially if you (like me) think a corporate social media sounds like a living hell.

TurtlesAlltheWayDown

Nasrallah was a clear eyed leader. Reminded me of Castro in some ways. Was genuinely sad to read he was murdered and like you said what happens next is basically up in the air. Have no clue about the internal dynamics of that resistance group.

M

Lol, I'm sorry I had paused the episode pretty early on to read something and didn't get to the movie mess. I completely understand. Sorry.

Tradili Porkmen

Yeah... everything is either very bleak. Or incredibly hopeful, for the liberation of so many people's. Just depending how you read things or who your listening to but yes it's scary. Besides the point but have you watched the film Saladin the Victorious?

Tradili Porkmen

I hope so, and I think it will among some part of the population, but I also think there's a great chance that some statistically significant number of people will gloss Nasrallah's assassination as "He was always talking about America and empire and money, and he didn't take The Jews seriously enough, and look what happened"

Michael S. Judge

Confusingly I think "Lebanese Armed Forces" is the formal national military and "Lebanese Forces" is the Falangist militia. In truth though, the border between the two was so porous during the civil war it hardly mattered, and the military did plenty of slaughter of Palestinian refugees in its own right, notably at Tel al-Zaatar.

Ian H

I would think if anything resistance would be emboldened. Especially if the ceasefire agreement he had come to WITH THE US AND ISRAEL was real.

Tradili Porkmen

Man as far as I can discern, from English speaking Lebanese and Palestinian news sources. The martyrdom of Nasrallah does not change the direction of the mission, of the message. Although this is a recent event... I'm far away and I'm an idiot who got kicked out of 9th grade.

Tradili Porkmen

Oh yeah, if you're talking Lebanese Forces proper, that's the official militant wing of the Christian fascist Kataeb party. They're the ones who did the Sabra & Shatila massacre (with the IDF having herded Palestinian and Lebanese Shia refugees into the camps already). There is conflicting information on whether or not Peter Daou was a young conscript during the ’82 war, which is one of the reasons I want to invite him on D/C, but he probably won't answer that

Michael S. Judge

Ha, I just did a long session of obsessive internet reading on the Lebanese Armed Forces, short answer is they basically don't exist. Tiny budget which in good years consists almost entirely of foreign aid from US/NATO and in bad years is less than $300 mil (as was the case from 2019-2022). Badly outdated hodgepodge of non-standardized equipment, most glaringly lacks advanced air defenses or anything but a token air force of turboprop trainers and ancient Huey and Puma helicopters. By law, commanded by a Christian, has long been extremely close to Falangist political factions, extremely corrupt and lacking legitimacy in the eyes of much of the population. In 2006, pledged to resist Israeli invasion and then retreated nearly to Beirut when the IDF crossed the border. Also contains the standard Praetorian Guard of comparatively well-equipped US-trained special forces/counter-terrorism operators whose loyalty to resist another US proxy is questionable at best.

Excellent episode. Unrelated, I’ve sent a few Twitter messages that I think have gone to “Requests”, but I think you would love the new Geordie Greep album. There’s a lot of Pynchon-esque characters throughout, especially in Through A War, which you could make the argument is more or less from the perspective of Blicero in his colonization/Herero/Hansel and Gretel period.

Any source on the drug testing in camps story? Having a hard time finding that one. edit: https://www.thecanary.co/uk/news/2024/03/05/teva-uk-protest/ I see a note in this article, and it appears to be a self-report by Israel Ministry of Health. Pulling that thread.

without having listened to the ep yet: I often ask myself this

MSJ, it would be great if you would consider posting on Bluesky. I for one will repost your stuff there and I know others will, too. It might seem like "starting over", trying to grow a follower count (which any sane person hates to think they have to do, anyway) but Twitter is a full-on Nazi bar, posts there don't get any traction unless they're racist, transphobic, anti-vaxx, anti-migrant, you name it. I don't know from Threads or Mastodon, but Bluesky seems to be learning a lot from the mistakes of Twitter, even before Musk bought it. For one thing, the community: Nazis, crypto bros, even cringe centrists regularly get bullied off the platform. Who's welcome? Amply bosomed trans lesbian goth girlfriends, furries, sex workers, bear gays, people who post photos of weird insects, etc. (Me, I'm just a middle-aged cinephile so none of that is my particular scene, but still! It's nice!)
