Excellent episode as always Michael — particularly intrigued by West Indian MSJ at 36:04. Would be interested in hearing more of this on future episodes; perhaps an intro a-La Bustance? The fans would love it. Something to consider.

Philip Wailes

I literally just shared this with my friend and said "He takes the long route while expounding but by the time the hour mark hits he's fuckin' cooking!"

Scott

You were really cooking with this one

Foist prollem, son, you got no idea how the life and times of Bustance Pemberton have contribbited to his dahlect. Prollem paht deux, you neglect the possibility that eithah the plantiff or de-fen-DAHNT should file fo'a change of venue, citing the ovahwhelming prejudice in favah of Donald Trump in West Palm Beach. Pahhaps Missa Rrrrrowth wisely relocated to the bohdah precinct of jussace PEMBERTON, wheyah TRUTH remangs SACRED

Michael S. Judge

Going to make a pedantic, regional complaint and say that the thing about Florida is that "the further south you go, the further to the North you're going." This shit happened in West Palm Beach, it's the region where all the dipshits from northern parts of the US moved to. (I grew up there because my parents moved there from New England when I was a toddler.) At least as far as the white neighborhoods go, no one in that area was actually born in Florida, and people with Southern accents are as rare as diamonds, generally having all died out/been replaced by Northern Whites decades ago.

Jeff Grey

With accent work like this I am counting down the days for a lil Original Pronunciation (OP) 🤞

Colin Helpio

Haha yea lol, it's somehow still funny to me despite how eternally grim it is to be seeing the same fucking shit pop up out of people's minds all these years later. God damn. Oooh boyee.

Divad Kong

I did hear that the fed have just just turned the magic money supply back on again (I think 50 basis points?) so apparently the tension can't be that bad! I guess they are going for the infinite new promise of shrimp Jesus ai god in a box as the path to solving the contradictions

Divad Kong

Funny, isn't it – and you gotta give kredit to old Carlos Marx on this one – that when people see, understand, and start to think and talk about how the world works, but they can't bring themselves to say "capitalism," they tend to end up somewhere like "7 Jewish Draculas sank the Lusitania"

Michael S. Judge

Yes, absolutely. But also the financial reserve is pretty totally financial sectorised at this point, although, that's a very tricky thing I wouldn't necessarily repeat in many places because it's literally a huge factor in outright Nazi ideological beliefs. But it actually is also kind of true. But not for the reasons they imagine which are all insane, but rather the obvious results of chasing the profit line go up at the expense of actually producing tangible goods. Ie capitalism. But there's a real tension there and idk how the fuck it gets resolved nicely, in fact it is almost guaranteed not to be

Divad Kong

I can't remember who wrote this or where, but somebody recently did a thorough paper about the fact that we might be heading into a period of mass friction between the Federal Reserve and the financial sector, that finance has gotten so shapeless and ubiquitous and structurally soaked into the crumbling foundation of *everything* that it's essentially impossible to maintain their level of power AND a functioning state

Michael S. Judge

But yes in the real world, it's true that there will also be private investors in the mix but still the process is the same and in many cases it's literally just a loan. Banks and investors are kind of a grey area at this scale, it's all credit

Divad Kong

How indeed. It's almost like the demons have overtaken even the basic function of empire. Because you do kind of need the industry to sustain your empire in the traditional sense, but now the empire is in even more abstracted money flows divorced utterly from production. I'm not smart enough to speculate on how this will translate to the real world mechanics of what things look like in the long term, but it can't be good I don't think. Maybe this is just how empires collapse. Which could be good I suppose. I know that historically when there's a big tension between the financiers and heavy industry with the pett y bourgeois as an aggrieved class, well, some pretty fucking bad things have happened

Divad Kong

Oh damn, I hadn't heard that version of it – the particular stories I've followed usually raised pools of prospective shareholders first – and at a brief glance, it appears that both versions do qualify as "leveraged buyouts," but lol how in the fuck is that legal

Michael S. Judge

Mike, you actually didn't quite get Romney's and friends tactics quite accurate. Actually what they do is get the loan to buy the company using the company as collateral and a promise to destroy the company and the jobs etc therein as the premise for profitability. On the short term is course. I know you basically said that but I think people will miss quite how demonic and criminal a tactic for making profit it is from how you said it is which in itself was incredibly demonic. No the true reality is forcing a company you just took over hostilely like a pirate jumping on a ship to take on the debts you used to raid it then seeking off the assets it had and running it into the ground with the investment money repaid hopefully and the company bankrupt and you with a couple million in the pocket.

Divad Kong

I want to get off the ride

as a social worker there were all of these off label metrics that you would use instead of the actual metrics but then you couldn't document them. like for example when a clients doorknob is greasy, they have relapsed. I don't know why that works so well. during productivity reviews the people who are flagged as the least productive will always be the people who talk about how they like the show Friends. I don't know why that is either. One of the ones with hiring for complex trauma is that if somebody hasn't just intuited sort of lefty non-liberal politics then they're not going to be able to handle trauma in an individual. I don't mean the like they call it lefty but it's actually word salad PhD semantic liberalism either. those people are damaging. But when you have a liberal therapist a lot of the time when you get to the important part of trauma treatment they don't like the part of reality that is distracting from the spectacle as the solution so they either shame the person into not acknowledging something real or they teach the person to avoid it with a deflection that just masks the trauma. almost always in an extremely transparent copy of the way that they mask their own because they're a therapist now so they're "cured".

Honestly, I don't think we should strive for the lives our parents got for free. We can live better lives with less. Embodying a resistance to neoliberal atomization and alienation in general is going to be necessary. Not saying it's easy. In some contexts it's pretty damn impossible. But in some contexts, it might be the only thing that makes sense to do. Super insufficiently materialist of me I know. I might get kicked out of somebody's communist 🎉 for this

Stop the flow of stimulants, whole system grinds to a halt. From the boardrooms to the oilfields Leviathan runs on stimulants. We are living in a speed culture. It's pretty goddamn scary. I don't really think you could stop the flow of stimulants at this point but it's a fun thought experiment. The shit Leviathan will do for plant alkaloids. And people think plants aren't conscious smdh.

“I saw them in the photograph finally, still indistinct but as real as my own tongue. Beings, somewhat like us, plagued by the futility of their limits. That night I dreamt of a peach, red and orange and large in a glass bowl the size of a fist. The skin of the peach opened, there was the flesh of the peach. The flesh of the peach opened, there was the stone of the peach. The stone of the peach opened, there was cyanide. The cyanide of the stone opened into a photograph. And upon the photograph, dimly, was a body. I do not mean a human body, or the body a peach has. But some intense, disgusting yearning to eat the stone of yourself, to dissolve the you-ness into you. I wept, there was salt. I ate the stone at my centre, and finally I found annihilating freedom.”

The superhero angle fascinates me. I kept thinking about that 'Supercitizen' award Routh won from his local police dept, coupled with Brace & Liz's analysis that Routh's psyche was crystalized in that moment, leading him to believe he truly was some kind of real superhero. to that end, I urge any listeners who haven't seen it yet to watch the 1968 film "Mr. Freedom". The titular Mr. Freedom is a Captain America analog, but he's moreso the raving amalgated id of any red-blooded American patriots, from the Rouths of the world to the upper crust of Langley. I can't recommend it enough, and the final monolog especially sums up the journey of Routh's weird meandering life.

It's especially great when it is someone with the power to actually help me out, at functionally zero cost to themselves, who decides that teaching me a lesson about having the right attitude is way more valuable to me than... just solving the problem.

Gotta love living in a society where whenever I muster the vulnerability to open up about something I am struggling with I get to listen to an identical speech about the power of possitive thinking.
