I’m assuming there’s 2 factors why these people ignore medical experts and keep congregating even when there are safer alternatives: 1) Fellowship. I’m an introvert who enjoys solitude and I’m getting worn down by the isolation. To an extrovert addicted to social contact, social distancing must be driving them insane. 2) American/Christian Exceptionalism. We’re in America, with arguably the best doctors in the world. God will keep us safe. Runaway viral infections don’t apply to us in the U.S…until they do. Pandemics have ravaged the U.S. before (1918 flu pandemic is the best example, but not the only one), and one certainly is now. The “it can’t happen to me” mindset is strong in this crowd, and when they do get sick they’ll act like there was nothing they could have done to prevent it.
