2025-03-30 02:12:18 +0000 UTCThere are definitely good/innocent male witches in Charmed, even ones not related to the Halliwell and Warren bloodlines. We see more and more of them as the seasons continue so it may be that the writers started out with a concept of male witch = bad/warlock and quickly abandoned that. Instead "witch" is eventually used more as a species category including subspecies or mixed species children born from a witch and a non-witch, like Whitelighter-Witches or Darklighter-Witches. And you're correct in Charmed lore a "warlock" is not necessarily gendered but the show does have more male warlocks than female warlocks, if I remember right. Warlocks are a separate species even from an evil witch. A warlock sells their soul for power or kills and steals the powers from a witch. An evil witch already has power but simply has to renounce the Wiccan Rede/Code and begin using their powers for personal gain or to harm others.

Unfortunately, modern pop culture has brought "warlock" into the mainstream as meaning male witch, another example of language and meaning shifting with time, but I still hold on to "witch" as the proper term regardless of gender. 😁 Charmed at least used warlocks with its original meaning, but then, I think every male witch on that series was considered evil? I could be wrong, haven't finished the series yet (spoilers okay for me, though, if someone wants to weigh in there.)
