Oh, you didn’t watch the credits! That’s a shame—they were so funny. It was all moments of her looking a bit like a fool and making the people she works with look good, which I love because it just drives home that lack of big star ego you see too much of, haha. But that’s all right—you got a bunch of good moments like that from the rest of the concert, since she just…made it SO clear how much she appreciates everybody. I love that. All the stages! Running up and down the main stage one last time for goodbyes! Gesturing to the crowd and crew every time she said, “Here’s to my real friends.” Everything. Knowing the exact number of people traveling with her and also thanking the people from the area they hired! All anybody wants is a little respect. And by modeling that, it’s good for younger people, honestly—there are lots of videos of swifties giving free friendship bracelets to the janitors at the end of a show, for example. I was brought up to respect people doing that kind of hard labor. You don’t know the kind of culture shock I got the first time I was out with somebody who sneered at me for stacking my dishes at a restaurant to make it easier for the waitress. ‘I just want to make it a little easier for them when they come to clean up our table.’ ‘Yeah, but it’s their JOB.’ And, well, sure it is… But where’s the harm in making somebody’s job feel less exhausting or demeaning? Money matters, sure. She gave out 55mil in bonuses, enough to buy a house for most. But then on TOP of that, she included the taxes and paperwork on them so they wouldn’t have to waste any on an accountant or fees. Along with a handwritten, signed thank you letter sealed with wax. Delivered directly by her father. No room for the company to get a cut. And the respect in having it be a fancy sealed envelope, in having her dad do it, in not making some huge Yay Me production out of it… I really, REALLY hope that other celebrities follow that lead. Because, yeah, the money is important—but everything else matters, too. And you see that appreciation and consideration here in Reputation, too. I know I bring it up a lot, but it’s just so rare to see rich people these days showing that kind of class. (I say ‘these days’ to contrast with the wealthy people my mom met in the 70s/80s, who sound very different from the ones I grew up around…) I’m hoping the Taylor’s Version of Reputation will surprise release this month. If it does, I’ll buy you the special CD with a poster included. If not, you’ll have to wait a liiittle longer. Because I think this is the CD you’re most likely to listen to of the bunch, haha. Next Era is Lover, which is very pop. It was supposed to have a tour that got canceled due to the pandemic—only one Lover-themed show happened (a mostly but not entirely acoustic performance without the big…everything she usually has) Even though the tour got canceled, she still paid everyone who was going to tour with her and kept them on retainer so they didn’t have to risk their health to get by Then we have folklore and evermore, who are considered sister albums—they’re very indie folk music acoustic vibes. Due to the pandemic, they didn’t get concerts, but folklore did have a livestreamed acoustic performance interspersed with prerecorded interviews. And then we have the current era, Midnights. Which is very…synth? It’s vibey. It’s got a distinct groove to it, like driving through a city on a rainy night. It’s a concept album based on the idea of ‘what keeps you up at night’—everything from staying up giddy about new love to ruminating on the fact she’s finally the same age John Mayer was when she dated him as a 19yo (what a CREEP—32 x 19 just don’t sit right with me, sorry) and how that trauma changed her as she grew. Unfortunately a very relatable song for many, myself included. Anyhow, you’ll finally get to experience Red as well as evermore and Midnights in the Eras Tour. And that one is a DOOZY, Popz, even cut down for the movie. It’s missing songs, had talking and poetry cut, and it’s STILL 3h long. Might be a whole weekend experience. 😂 (Fans are clamoring for a full version… I want a DVD, myself, haha. I like physical media.) This is as much for lurkers as for you, haha.
