One big issue with everyone thinking that Lena had a mate and an oversized dog was that Kara had to play along in both roles.

The week after their return to National City, Sam extended an invitation for dinner at her large house in the nearby suburbs.

Lena hoped it would be a nice opportunity to relax after the stress of the break-in. She accepted without thinking about the request Sam put all in caps: AND BRING KRYPTO, TOO!!! RUBY WILL LOVE THAT.

Sam set up a barbecue out in the yard, and it was a relief that she had to juggle cooking and entertaining, because that meant she didn’t find it weird when Kara greeted her and disappeared into the trees.

Lena naively thought that Ruby would be satisfied with meeting Krypto once.

Kara returned to the deck in full werewolf form, and for the next forty minutes, Ruby decided she had a new playmate.

“I’m going to dress Krypto up!” Ruby happily declared and put Kara in a chokehold before she could manage to skulk away in concern. “Should I use pink or purple bows?”

Much to Kara’s distress, Ruby owned an excessive number of hair ties, ribbons, and products. She sprayed down the top of Kara’s head with a squirt bottle and brushed vigorously at her furry mane.

“Oh, Ruby, I don’t know if Krypto needs all of that.” Lena frowned at her mate’s clear dismay and very drawn back ears.

“Sure she does! She’s gonna be the champion of my dog show!” Ruby lined up her horde of stuffed animals, including one that was more like a bear. She put them each through the same preparations, but Kara received the most attention of them all.

Kara whined in protest but tolerated a lot more than most alphas would. Ruby ensured her cooperation by stealing a few snacks from the dinner table and feeding the werewolf in between sessions.

“Isn’t she a funny kid?” Sam grinned and carried several steaks over to the table where Lena was observing the activity. “Sometimes it’s tough being a single mom, but it’s the greatest feeling to watch your pup engaging in creative play.”

Somehow, during their conversations, Krypto disappeared from sight. Kara walked back onto the deck at that exact moment. She wore the same casual outfit that Lena picked for her that morning, but she was soaked around the head and shoulders. One of the bows still hung from a strand of her wet hair, and Lena reached out to pull it off before anyone else noticed.

“I must have accidentally stepped through a sprinkler,” Kara intoned through an innocent grin and reached for a chicken leg that she bit into ravenously.

Ruby raced up onto the deck with a pouty look on her face. “Krypto ran off!”

Lena jumped in to cover for her non-existent, missing animal. “That happens sometimes, but rest assured, Krypto is well trained and always comes back.”

“We’re having dinner now anyway.” Sam tugged out a seat for her daughter and Ruby sank into it with her eyes on Kara, like she was working out their secret.

Sam picked up the conversation right where she left off. “So I know you’re going to hate me for asking, but when are you having pups?”

Lena laughed at the bad topic-transition and dropped a hand to her flat stomach. “No time soon, and definitely not when there’s a constant threat to my security.”

Sam frowned sympathetically and reached out to take her hand. “We’re going to get to the bottom of all of that. Have you found out anything else about the break-in?”

“Nope,” Lena cynically declared and picked at a piece of grilled chicken. “The L-Corp break-in was just a way to get my fingerprints and retina scans - and I haven’t been able to dig up any more information on the man who broke into my penthouse. He was working for someone else, but for now that’s a mystery.”

With the heat of the day on them, Lena hadn’t bothered wearing long sleeves for a change. The scars on her arms were out and visible, and she self-consciously tucked them under the table. She breathed a little harder as she tried to avoid the swirling vortex of anxiety that threatened to suck her in whenever she thought about the kinds of violence she endured. Some of it hadn’t left a scar, but there were marks on her in other ways, and that would be detectable in her pheromones if she dwelled on it for too long.

Kara comforted her with a heavy hand on her shoulder and a look that never failed to pull Lena out of a trauma-spiral. “You’re safe now. No one is going to get through me.”

Sam’s look of concern shifted to an impressed smile. “You picked a good one, Lena. You know you can both stay here with us at any time.”

“Krypto, too,” Ruby chimed in, kicking at Kara’s chair and pouting as she glanced around the yard. “Do you think she’s gonna come back soon?”

“After I finish this,” Kara blurted, too distracted by the conversation to remember she shouldn’t have said that. “I mean, after I finish eating, I’ll go look for Krypto.”

Ruby sat up straighter and eyed the well-used comb at her side. “Good, because she needs another beauty treatment. Maybe a perm.”

Sam chuckled at her kid’s precociousness. “Did I mention her babysitter is like eighty years old? They play ‘beauty parlor’ a lot.”

“Maybe you could try out a new game with Krypto,” Kara suggested with far more investment in the subject than might be considered normal. “What about fetch? You could throw the ball as far away as you can. Krypto will bring it back at lightning speed.”

“Nah, I don’t like fetch. What else can Krypto do?” Ruby placed her arms in front of her like she was in the middle of a serious negotiation.

Kara took a second to breathe and finish a piece of steak. “Well. Krypto has a lot of abilities and hobbies. She likes to read—with our help, of course. She’ll watch TV with you. She’s not your average dog.”

“Does she drink water from the toilet bowl?” Ruby asked, as if challenging that assumption.

No,” Lena intoned and lifted a plate of kebabs to offer one to Kara.

“We’re gonna play house next,” Ruby decided with her chin propped on her hand. “Krypto’s gonna be the baby.”

Kara grabbed a kebab and snapped her teeth around it with the same distressed look that had been on her face during the earlier part of the afternoon.

“I thought we could finish up dinner and walk into town for ice cream,” Sam butted in, saving them all from the whims of her pup’s imagination.

Kara’s joy returned instantly at the mention of ice cream. “Now that’s a great idea.”

Lena smirked and dabbed her napkin at the corners of her lips to hide her amusement.

About thirty minutes later, they all headed out on a short walk to the little local town.

The closest mom-and-pop ice cream shop sold all kinds of different scoops with cones, and Kara became as excited as Ruby as she looked at all of the flavors.

In the end, Kara settled for a three-scoop waffle cone with pistachio, pecan brittle, and peanut butter cup.

Lena selected a one-scoop tub of rocky road. She expected they would take a stroll with Sam and Ruby and chit-chat some more, but her plans were dashed when she caught Kara biting chunks off her ice cream instead of licking the creamy treat.

“Someone’s pretty ravenous, huh?” Sam licked at her own strawberry cone and shamelessly watched Kara devour hers in a few bites. “Is it only with food or—?”

Lena didn’t give Sam the opportunity to pry. “Well, it was nice catching up with you guys, but we had better head off to find Krypto before she gets in any trouble.”

She escorted Kara out of the shop while her friend chuckled at her hasty exit.

Knowing Sam, Lena would receive multiple texts meant to tease her. She casually turned off her phone for the rest of the night.

Unfortunately, that ended up being the worst decision she could make.

The following morning, Lena strolled into work with her mate padding along on all fours, and found Eve already in her office with a stern-faced alpha.

“I don’t recall having a meeting scheduled for this morning,” Lena intoned with a flick of her lashes to her unimpressed guest. She bristled at the unknown alpha hovering in her vicinity, and her quiet distress evoked a soft growl from Krypto.

The large wolf flanked Lena all the way to her desk and kept her eyes on the stranger who tsked at her bad behavior.

“Lena, this is Jenna,” Eve gushed and clasped her hands in excitement. “I hired her to work with Krypto. She’s the best dog trainer in National City.”

“I appreciate the sentiment, but I find that unnecessary.” Lena eyed Jenna the same way she squinted at anyone who claimed to be the best at anything. Wearily, and with unspoken doubt.

Without any hesitation, Jenna stepped up to prove her usefulness. “According to your assistant, your dog has not only eaten other people's lunches, but also the documents off of their desks. In one instance, Krypto even slobbered on someone’s chair and chewed the legs off. To be candid, Miss Luthor, your staff will either quit or they’ll sue for an unsafe work environment. You need me.”

Jenna pointed to where Krypto had climbed onto the couch meant for guests and took up the full thing with her fluffy body.

“Give her a chance,” Eve pleaded with genuine sincerity. “Krypto is a sweetheart. I’d hate it if she couldn’t come to the office anymore.”

Eve’s sad doe eyes were the only reason Lena tolerated the idea of Jenna being anywhere near the both of them.

Fine. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.” Lena’s dismissive attitude served to get rid of Eve, but Jenna lingered as Krypto refused to move an inch.

Down,” Jenna commanded and huffed at the belligerent way Krypto ignored her by sticking her nose into the cushions.

“Go on,” Lena instructed quietly so only the wolf would hear.

“I said down,” Jenna repeated and looked pleased with herself as Krypto leapt off the couch.

Lena watched as the werewolf happily trotted off towards Eve’s desks to snuffle at the drawer where she kept the snacks.

Jenna trailed the giant creature into the hall and Lena smirked as she listened to the loud conversations taking place.

“It looks like Krypto is already hungry,” Eve laughed and opened the drawer to take out several options. She placed a granola bar, trail mix and a packet of Chocos in front of Krypto’s snoot and allowed her to pick from the three options.

Krypto tilted her large fluffy head to the side in thanks and lunged to take the Chocos.

Jenna made a grab for them, but she couldn’t match the speed of a werewolf. The situation launched her off on a rant. “First of all, Miss Teschmacher, you’re reinforcing bad behavior, and secondly all of these snacks contain chocolate, which is highly toxic to dogs.”

Without any care to how it would look, Krypto delicately broke into the package of chocolate sandwich cookies. She had them all in her mouth in a matter of seconds and trotted back to wedge herself behind Lena’s desk.

Jenna gave up on lecturing Eve and walked into the office to deal with Lena directly. “Miss Luthor—”

“Krypto listens to me,” Lena interrupted a tad more severely than was reasonable. “I can assure you she’s very well trained, but maybe I haven’t been keeping an eye on her as much as I should.”

The sound of Krypto’s jaws working their way through those cookies made her taper off. Lena stood up and placed the tips of her fingers on the desk.

“Krypto, come here.” Lena pointed to her side and waited for her silly mate to demonstrate some listening skills.

Krypto’s ears perked up and she padded over to stand at the side of Lena’s desk with her tail raised. She blinked innocently at Lena and sniffed the air with keen interest to smell her amusement.

Sit,” Lena instructed, and bit back a laugh as Krypto sauntered off to the couch to plant herself on one of the cushions with all four paws resting on it.

Off,” Lena uttered before Jenna had a conniption.

Krypto huffed with her snoot in the air, and then jumped down like she planned to slink off to raid someone’s lunch.

“Stay here,” Lena intoned so that her mate didn’t get any ideas of vanishing.

She felt particularly smug when Krypto turned and made her way over to the desk again to sit directly in front of it like a guard dog.

“Congratulations, you’ve taught her the very basics in obedience. I hardly believe a well-trained dog would act the way Krypto does. I could have her listening to your every word.”

“She already does.” Lena stared at Jenna as she listed off commands with the full knowledge that her mate would listen to every word. “Lie down. Roll over. Stand.”

The quick utterances coincided with Krypto flattening her belly to the ground, then flipping onto her side with the goofiest expression as her tongue lolled out. Then she sprang up on her hind legs to tower over Jenna with eyes far too sharp for a normal canine.

“I had no idea she could do all of that!” Eve squealed from the doorway and hurried inside to watch the impromptu show. “What else does she know?”

Everything,” Lena insisted, and saw the barest snarl curling Krypto’s lips as Jenna shrank back.

“Krypto, bring me my clutch.” Lena slid her gaze to Jenna, who stepped back in relief when Krypto landed on all fours to run over to the stylish rack where Lena kept her belongings.

There was no hesitation as Krypto locked her large jaws very carefully around the expensive clutch. She not only brought it back to Lena, she placed it on her desk and nudged it closer with her nose.

“Parlor tricks,” Jenna sneered, though whatever dignity she hoped to keep was lost the moment Lena laughed.

“Krypto, please escort Jenna out of my office. We won’t be needing her service.” Lena sweetened the dismissal by lifting her compact mirror out of her clutch to touch up her lipstick. It was all an act, and she watched on as Krypto bared her teeth and began to stalk forward.

Jenna backed away without any further intimidation and stumbled out of the room to break into a run.

Lena returned to her work, content in the idea that Eve wouldn’t be hiring any more trainers.

As a reward for any other tricks that Krypto performed, Eve ordered a fully catered lunch and brought her around the floor to show off.

Given that Kara couldn’t always control her transformations, it was a good distraction for her while Lena spent the entire morning reviewing a budget.

A while after the lunch banquet, the werewolf wandered back into Lena’s office and shifted back into her human form.

“How was your morning, darling?” Lena crooned, not bothering to glance up as the enticing hint of rut scent traveled to her nostrils. “You’re practically the mascot of L-Corp at this point.”

“I can’t believe Eve thought I needed a trainer, but at least she made up for it with it the t-bone steak and the roast beef she bought me for lunch.” Kara stretched her limbs overhead and pulled on some casual clothes for the office.

The sweet and formidable aroma was offset by another thick spice.

James intruded on their first moment alone together and waved a bunch of folders around to get their attention.

“I just wanted to get the final approvals for our upcoming product launch party.”

Lena didn’t like the offensive musk that rolled off him. She snatched a pen from his hand and glanced over the pages requiring her signature.

Kara hovered near her shoulder in protective mode.

James grabbed onto his tie and smoothed it out. “I was thinking maybe you and I should do lunch and talk through the unveiling of The Empath, since the product launch is tonight.”

It had been months since Lena spent any one-on-one time alone with James, and he made it clear he wasn’t also extending the invitation to Kara. His eyes wandered in distraction to the claim on Lena’s throat as he took back his pen with a low sigh.

“I want to apologize for not supporting you the way you needed.” James dropped his head and attempted to rein in the volume of his voice. “I didn’t mean to make your situation worse, so if I did that, just know it wasn’t intentional on my part.”

Lena flashed him a smile and avoided his gaze by signing the papers to hurry him out of the office. She handed then back with tension threading through her limbs and attempted to appear at ease with a lift of her shoulder.

“Everything looks good on paper, James. I say we save the lunch for another day so we can focus on getting this up and running. You’re still one of the best here at L-Corp and that’s all that matters to me.”

The sincerity in her voice made her feel vulnerable, but it was good to get it off her chest in the hopes of things returning to normal. She didn’t like friction between them, and with Kara’s presence, there had been a lot of it lately.

James stared down at her for a second like he was processing the compliment and the rejection, then a smile cracked his lips and he shrugged. “Sure, rain check. I’ll see you at the launch.”

For once, Kara didn’t follow him towards the door, and kept her stance by Lena’s side until James was out of the room. She stalked around the desk with her chin raised like she was listening to his retreating footsteps, and then diffused his lingering scent with her own stronger pheromones.

“He still thinks you’re his,” Kara growled after a beat and refused to tear her eyes off of the door in case he dared to come back.

Lena could imagine her mate’s heckles up if she had been in werewolf form, and smirked at the territorial posturing that she had come to find endearing. “No, he doesn’t. He knows he never stood a chance and he’ll get over it eventually.”

Kara huffed at her assumptions and Lena fanned herself with a few loose papers on her desk. The richer aroma of her mate was calling to her omega and her panties were becoming slick from inhaling the musk. It wasn’t conducive to a good working environment, though it certainly strengthened the bond between them.

There was always a risk with heightened aggression in alphas when one of them was in rut. Lena wondered if that was why James had barrelled in with such an attitude, but it was a fleeting thought as she toyed with the idea of leaving early to sate her sexual appetites.

“What was the device he mentioned, the one you’re launching tonight?” Kara’s belated curiosity coincided with her returning to Lena’s side now that she was sure no threat lingered.

“The Empath?” Lena queried with the sudden realization that this was the perfect excuse to leave the office.

She could claim to be testing the prototype before the party in a few hours, and she suspected that Kara would be happy to be part of the trials.

“It’s something I’ve spent a lot of time working on,” Lena divulged with pride. “It’s easy to preach the benefits of open communication, but there are plenty of people out there that struggle to articulate how they feel. This little piece of tech syncs the wearers into one another's central nervous system and cerebral cortex, to an extent. You can’t harm one another or feel physical pain, but the users can share emotions and sensations.”

Kara cocked her head as she tried to process the information and squinted quizzically. “What does that mean?”

“It might be easier if I show you.”

Lena could have explained in further detail, but then the element of surprise would be lost. She chose to stay vague while she retrieved the pieces of tech from her safe, and then stored them in a high security lock box that she tucked into her bag.

They were back at her penthouse within the hour, and while Kara made a second sweep of the place, Lena kicked off her heels and wandered into the bedroom. The second she touched the zipper of her dress, Kara appeared out of nowhere.

“The place is clear. I did a quick run of the five floors below us and the rooftop,” Kara stated with pinched lips and intense eyes that seemed to be willing Lena’s fingers to drag the zipper down.

The Empath was resting in its case on their bed, and Lena picked it up with every of intention of giving it a good test drive.

“Thank you for being so thorough. Come here.” Lena crooked her finger to bring Kara over and typed in the passcode to the slim case that held two small, identical, thin strips that flexed when she lifted them. She swept her hair over her shoulder and pressed the slender strip to the nape of her neck, shivering as it latched on non-invasively.

“Now you,” Lena intoned and approached Kara as if her mate were still in wolf form.

The skittish unease with the device came purely from her inner animal. Lena soothed any concerns with a calm hand on Kara’s forearm and the beguiling scent of her omega.

She placed the device carefully in the same place on her mate, then stepped back with keen interest to observe Kara.

“Nothing is happening.” Kara reported after a moment and sagged just a tad with the slightest hint of disappointment.

“Give it a chance to catch up. It’s mapping us.” Lena slipped her dress off to recline in bed, and cupped her breasts to tease them through the lace of her bra. “Now when I do this, you should feel it.”

Kara’s puzzled expression changed to arousal, and Lena heard her gasp as the sensation was shared.

The alpha looked ready to lunge for the bed, but Lena redirected her to the seat by her vanity.

“Hold on. This isn’t all The Empath can do, but it does allow a certain level of intimacy for couples who might want to reconnect. It’s important to try out all of the features before the launch. Take your clothes off, Kara. I want to test the strength of our bond.”

Kara didn’t have to be asked twice. She stripped off with a soft rumble while Lena removed her bra and shimmied out of her panties to bare herself completely.

Even without the stimulation, Kara’s shaft began to rise and Lena attributed it to their chemistry. She made a point of lightly stroking her fingers up her inner thighs and over her hips to witness Kara shiver, then delved lower to the slick apex that had all of her mate’s attention.

The lightest caress of her fingertips along her wet slit tensed Kara’s thighs, and Lena teased them both by massaging at her clit. Kara’s cock jerked to full mast, and before the alpha could take it in hand, Lena rasped, “Don’t. You come when I come and not a second before then. Sit on your hands or it ruins the experiment.”

Kara did as she was asked in her eagerness to play along. She positioned herself to stand up as soon as Lena released her from their game, but otherwise behaved and watched in excitement.

Lena stroked her finger down the slick division of her pussy and teased her clit with intermittent rubbing. She spread her entrance with both hands and moaned as Kara’s cock started to twitch in envy.

“This is right where you want to be, isn’t it, Kara? I can tell your rut is about to begin.” Lena figured out the ways to touch herself that would affect her mate the most.

She worked on Kara’s five senses with the tantalizing swirls against her clit, the clench of her shimmering opening, and her dulcet moans. Her scent perfumed the bedroom with sex, and it became thicker as she slipped two fingers into her cunt to massage her g-spot. In just a few good thrusts, her hand was wet with her own slick.

“My rut might start early if you keep touching your pussy like that. I can feel everything, Lena. It’s like you’re tight around me.” Kara turned restless in her chair and shifted on top of her hands, groaning along to the soft noise of Lena pushing into her soaked opening.

They fed off each other's pleasure. For every pass Lena’s fingers took over her clit, she arched from the throbbing sensation of Kara’s shaft. She stared at the grand size of it, so girthy and erect with translucent droplets of need bathing the tip, and inserted three fingers into herself. The extra internal stretch evoked a growl from Kara, and Lena’s moans softened to keening whines as her mate’s base grew larger.

It would be cruel to make Kara knot outside the hot constriction of her cunt, and yet Lena wasn’t ready to give up control. She wanted to be the cause of Kara’s release, even if it meant she had yet to touch her alpha.

“You need a closer view, don’t you, darling? Kneel between my thighs and watch as I open my tight pussy.”

Kara launched herself with superhuman speed and smoothed her hands up Lena’s inner thighs to keep her pretty inner lips spread nicely. She groaned at the faster strokes Lena took and pumped her hips to thrust into air. There was no way Kara would be content to sit back and watch, and her oncoming rut put her in a dominant mindset.

“Use another, Lena. You want to feel like it’s me stretching you, right?” Kara encouraged, completely riveted to the cherry blush of Lena’s entrance accepting a fourth finger. “Good girl, pump your fingers faster. I wouldn’t be holding back, so neither should you.”

“You just want to hear me beg for you,” Lena rasped and obediently stuffed her cunt at a pace that had Kara growling.

The slam of her fingers spilled slick onto the bed and she breathed in the heady musk of Kara’s claim pheromones. Lena pounded her tight little hole the way Kara would, and the smack of her palm sent vibrations all through her aching clit.

“That’s right, Lena, moan for me.” Kara took hold of Lena’s backside to rock her hips, even though she wasn’t sheathed inside her. “Offer me your pussy and I’ll fill it with all of my seed.”

Being guided through masturbation was overwhelming when coupled with the heightened emotions and sensations of Kara’s lust and love.

Kara’s scent convinced her omega that her mate was already inside her, and Lena writhed on her fingers, bucking into her palm as her abdomen clenched and her head fell back.

“Oh fuck, please-come inside me–”

Kara pulled her hand away at the first internal spasm and Lena held herself open for her mate’s seed to splash into her ravaged opening.

Thick jets spurted freely and Kara pushed all of it into Lena with a series of uninhibited thrusts that never slowed down. She was finally inside her, and the excitement had Kara’s teeth on Lena’s throat.

Yes, Kara, pin me down. Mark me again,” Lena pleaded with airy moans and enveloped Kara’s broad shoulders with her arms. She clung onto her mate to feel the raw power in every surge forward, and bounced into the mattress with the hard strike of Kara’s quads.

There was no need to speak with the device linking them together, not that Lena was capable of saying much while she was being railed so roughly. Salacious sounding moans became raspy, guttural grunts with every internal thump against her cervix, and Lena dug her nails into Kara’s tanned skin. She submitted to the bliss and quaked from Kara’s shaft throbbing in a second release.

It was wanton to lock her legs around Kara’s lower back, but Lena craved the hot outpouring of seed. She hoped it pooled inside her chasm and undulated upward to try and take every last drop before Kara pulled out.

Lena’s channel clamped around nothing, and Kara flipped her onto all fours with a rumble of praise. “Good girl, keep it all inside. I can touch every inch of you now.”

Kara’s ragged breaths puffed across Lena’s shoulder, and she slotted into Lena’s creamy entrance with a nip to her neck. She left bright blemishes on her skin and sucked ardently over the claim on her throat while cupping at her pussy.

The slippery glide of Kara’s fingers pushed Lena’s labia apart and she shuddered at the concentrated pressure against her clit. She braced against the bed to push into Kara for the satisfaction of feeling her mate bottom out, and worked her slick walls to massage the alpha’s cock.

“I never thought I’d enjoy being dominated by anyone, let alone an alpha, but you make it so loving, Kara. I feel it even more now that we’re connected.”

There was safety in being beneath someone so strong, and Lena’s omega reveled in their obvious differences. She was soft and pliant in Kara’s hands, and her slick let her accept the bulkier base of Kara’s cock.

Lena trusted Kara as much as she trusted herself, if not more so.

Kara knew her limits and pushed her right to the brink of them with a fast-forming knot that she wouldn’t let take. The barrage of thrusts slapped Lena between the thighs, and she made the most pathetic sounds that urged Kara to fill her again.

“It’s like I claimed you all over again. Except I can feel you. Like you’re part of me this time.” Kara angled her pelvis to drive her tip into the warmth inside Lena and squeezed at her breasts to encourage the perpetual back-and-forth of their rutting.

The fast flick of Kara’s fingers brought Lena’s thighs together and the pinching tug of her nipples inspired a rosy blush on her cheeks. She caught sight of herself in the vanity mirror, all mussed hair and streaked lipstick, and realized Kara was watching her reflection.

She wanted to perform for her mate, to visually express the intensity they were sharing. Her urges must have translated in her look because Kara reared back with a hand beneath Lena’s jaw.

Mirrors used to be one of Lena’s greatest enemies. The scars on her body had shamed her into believing she was unworthy of love or kindness. It was an act of defiance to see herself tangled in Kara’s strong arms, and the alpha knew how she felt because they were linked. Maybe that was why Kara shoved her thighs into a wider spread to flaunt the shimmery partition of her cunt.

The sensitive pinks of her inner lips became a darker fuchsia with their mating, and stretched so beautifully for Kara’s intrusion. Lena didn’t focus on the scars she preferred to cover. She found her hooded eyes were transfixed on the less permanent marks Kara was making.

Kara mapped her fair skin with love bites and the dusky shades of her fingerprints. She made vivid patterns over Lena’s hips with her short nails and darkened Lena’s complexion with the charge of her hips to bounce her soundly on her massive girth.

“You’re beautiful, not broken,” Kara husked into her ear.

Lena believed it as her body contorted in orgasm. She strained precariously before she soaked their thighs and the sheets, then fell limp against Kara’s chest. This time Kara didn’t pull out, and her knot bloomed to its full size while she coaxed them onto their sides to tuck Lena close.

They sprawled there for almost an hour, basking in the transcendence of their love and communicating with unspoken emotions. If not for the product launch, they might never have left their bedroom at all.

“Duty calls,” Lena sighed eventually, and then slinked off to shower with Kara right on her heels.

Once Lena removed The Empath and secured it back in its box, they scrubbed off and dressed in clean clothes.

Hours later, Lena worried she had done irrevocable damage to herself with the device because her pussy remained wet even in the face of anxiety.

“I hate having to talk about my work,” Lena divulged as they walked arm-in-arm into the launch party. “You would think after years of experience, I would be fine with public speaking, but it still terrifies me.”

“I think that’s to be expected when you’ve been attacked at prior events,” Kara solemnly reasoned as she caught sight of James waving them over and tightened her grip on Lena’s hand. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

“I know,” Lena intoned through a grateful and wide smile. “I never have to worry with you by my side.”

Kara postured in her long strides and pressed an affectionate kiss to Lena’s hand. “I’ll be right here next to you.”

For the second time that day, James intruded on their conversation and smoothed down the striped tie he was wearing. “Well, maybe not right next to her. Lena has to reveal The Empath in about fifteen minutes.”

“Just enough time for some appetizers and a dance or two.” Lena dodged out of the path of her ex and beamed cordially at her mate.

Waiters circulated around the event space in long waistcoats, holding up large trays of food and drink. The romantic atmosphere of the party put Lena in a more peaceful mood. She lifted dainty little bites from several different platters and hand-fed Kara with a smile on her face.

An orchestra played upbeat violin music mixed with modern songs. Lena stepped onto the dance floor with a no-fear and carefree attitude.

“I’m not the best dancer.” Kara eyed up the moves of other alphas and attempted to replicate them. “When you’ve spent most of your time running around in a forest, catching your food with your bare teeth, you don’t get a lot of opportunities to practice.”

That little anecdote earned some odd looks from the older couple that was swaying nearby. The omega raised her white bushy eyebrows at Kara and the alpha peered over at Lena like he wanted an explanation.

“Oh, she’s an outdoorswoman. Very rugged. You know the type.” Lena went a little overboard with dramatic emphasis and pulled her mate away from anyone who would eavesdrop on their discussion.

“Don’t watch what they’re all doing. Focus on me, on how our bodies move together. You certainly have no trouble in the bedroom,” Lena coached with a gentle smile and caressed Kara’s cheek before clasping her shoulder.

She used the sway of her hips to get Kara’s moving in tandem, and soon they were stepping around couples, happy and oblivious to the less than friendly stare of some of the waiters.

Kara took the liberty to cup Lena’s backside, and nuzzled into the nape of her neck in distraction. “If this is how all your launch parties start, I look forward to escorting you to more.”

“My interest lies in the after-party that we’ll be having alone.” Lena raised her brows suggestively and allowed herself to relax in the safety of her mate’s arms.

She was content and infatuated with the easy strides of her mate that swept them across the room, and for a few spectacular minutes, her world narrowed to just Kara.

Of course, like all good things, it would come to an end.

Lena sighed as the music cut off and James signaled for her to take the stage where a spotlight lit up a podium.

Lena parted reluctantly from Kara’s arms and wandered into the glaring light to introduce her latest gadget. “Welcome everyone to the launch of The Empath: our most recent revolution in neural linking technology. We all spend our days connected to each other through tech, but we don’t really connect. We live in a world where it’s all too easy to forget that another person is sitting on the other side of a screen. This device gives us a new way to work together and bond. Apart from enhancing the way we communicate and understand one another, The Empath allows for motor neuron interactivity. By placing this strip on the back of my neck, I can feel the actions my helpful assistant undertakes in real time. Two or more users can establish a secure neuro-link and experience their world through a new lens. The possibilities are endless.”

Across the room, one of the new L-Corp hires stepped out with a box containing The Empath.

Near the podium was the partnered device, which Lena opened and secured to the back of her neck.

The screens around the room showed their brain waves to the audience.

The next part of the demonstration involved performing a bunch of tasks – but a hush fell over the room as several masked people walked into the crowd. They swarmed in like shadows as if taking part in the show.

Lena turned to her staff in curiosity. “What’s going on? Did you plan for all of this?”

No sooner did she ask than the masked people stopped walking.

Lena’s eye was drawn to the one who stood closest to Lena’s new employee. He pulled a tazer from his hip and pointed it at her employee’s temple.

That moment lasted a long time.

Lena stared out across the event space at her employee, and then looked to Kara, who was alert and pushing through the crowd to get to her.

A zap rang out, loud and sparking, and Lena would have screamed if she had the voice for it.

With The Empath providing a perfect link, Lena experienced the attack first-hand. Her eyes rolled back and she dropped – not to the floor, but into the arms of someone else. Someone whose face was concealed behind a mask.

She saw a flash of blonde hair, smelled a scent of anger and threat, and then she lost consciousness.

It's definitely a dramatic direction that keeps the story going. 😂 But I think one of the big loose ends with this story was the fact that we hadn't met some of the villains, who need to be eliminated for Lena to truly feel secure. Lol, I just really like writing Kara in wolf-mode doing derpy things and tolerating Ruby's games. Wolf mode will be an important part of the next chapter. Since Lena did get hurt, it will inspire a bigger reaction out of Kara, that much is certain. All of the stories I've written have piled up over the years and it's so hard to decide what to continue and what not to continue in the immediate. I honestly pump these things out as fast as humanly possible and there's still so many things I want to continue. 😓 I'm happy this chapter engaged you and hopefully you enjoy the next part! Thank you!!

ok i'm finally able to catch up! wow what a direction! i didn't anticipate something like this to happen considering i have been easily lulled by their love and magnetism and attraction for each other. never again! (probably again if we're being honest.) anyway! fascinating to see the hidden identity trope to manifest in the whole kara/krypto thing LOL i can only imagine how it'll play out in future parts, if it doesn't directly do anything with the next chapter. speaking of - wow what a cliffer! very interesting to see the plot move forward with this suspense and the bad actors that will hopefully come to light. can't imagine kara not going absolutely feral against the enemies. james is a good suspect to be entangled in this but he may be a red herring, so we'll just have to see. i remember liking this series but not being super in love with it, i think because as i went through your list i think other stories just captured my attention more at the time. but now that there's MYSTERY AND INTRIGUE i'm invested hahah thanks for your efforts as always and look forward to more when you get around to them 🫡💖

betty

I know. It's terrible, but it's all for the plot. 😓 Thank you!

When I got to the end of writing this, I figured that would be everyone's reaction so I'm not surprised. 😂😭 💔 Some good theories! Much like the show, there's more than one person who is after Lena and for various reasons. But we'll have to see who carried this one out in the next chapter. 🤐 Thank you!!

Thank you! There *has to be* more after the cliffhanger. I think the mini-polls helped reveal there's more overall interest in some fics than I assumed based on other poll results.

I know, I know, I might have thought "Everyone's going to hate me when I post this" but the plot. 😭

why??? you cant do this to us! (great story thank you)

I might have made a big inhale and gasped, "Oh my Gawd! You b!+<&!" when I got to the end of this. How could you end the chapter there? You're evil. 🤯🥺 Well played. My money is on James being involved in this. I thought so already. I think he's the one who attacked her the last time, and I think he's the one that caught her as she passed out. Kara needs to rip his throat out. Not to mention ripping his little dick off and feed it to him.

So glad you updated. This is one my favorites. Please don't leave us hanging long 🥹

I might have shouted DON'T STOP THERE when I reached the end of this chapter.

Big uh oh. Thank you! ☺️

oh snap! uh oh!! Thanks for sharing ;)
