Kara felt her heart skip a beat as she dodged a couple holding hands and a group of their friends trailing close behind them. She turned down an alley to avoid the rest of the crowds.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Winn asked. His voice sounded small on the end of the phone as Kara quickened her pace down the dark avenue. “It’s not too late to come back and order pizza.”

Anticipation had her fingertips tingling as she walked, and she sighed at the sound of Winn’s concern.

Leaves were blowing in the wind, fluttering above her head like bats and she glanced at the moon. It hung heavy in the sky, swollen and bright like a beacon that guided the way.

“Of course it is,” Kara muttered into the phone and tightened her coat around herself as a cold breeze swept around her and tugged at her clothes. She imagined ghostly hands pulling her down the street and felt her mouth go dry as she caught sight of the tall building. “I’m almost there.” She whispered in excitement. “This is part of being a journalist, right?”

“You mean Paranormal Journalist.” Winn corrected with a laugh. “Seriously, Kara, you can’t be expecting this to be real. It’ll be some guy in leather acting like a douche.”

“Who said anything about a guy?” Kara retorted with a snort. “I don’t get it. You believe in aliens and alternate universes but you draw the line at everything else? Where’s your sense of adventure?”

“At home where it should be, on Netflix.” Winn stated dryly, then heaved out a sigh that sounded like a hiss of static. “There’s a lot of crazies out there, Kara, and you keep running towards them in pursuit of a story. I worry about you.”

“Yeah, I know you do, but this is real, Winn.” Kara enthusiastically said, her head tipped back to take in the building she was about to enter. “I can feel it in my bones.”

“Shouldn’t you be feeling it in your veins?” Winn drawled sarcastically, then laughed at his own joke.

Kara rolled her eyes and fumbled with her bag to pull out her notebook. She checked the number and then announced, “Okay gotta go, I’m here. I’ll call you later.” She hung up before he could say anything else and took a few deep breaths to ready herself, then squared her shoulders and walked into the building as if she belonged there.

“Can I help you?” The woman behind the desk asked curiously, halting Kara on her way to the elevator.

“Yes, I have an appointment,” Kara said matter of factly. Her hand tightened around her notebook and she forced a smile onto her face.

“At this time of night?” The receptionist asked and cocked her head to the side. “Elevators are strictly for authorized personnel. I require a name to confirm your… appointment.” She sneered, her eyes trailing over Kara as if she was dressed too cheaply to be an escort.

Kara’s cheeks burned with indignation at the implication in the woman’s tone, and then she bit out sharply, “Lena Luthor. I’m here to interview her.”

Surprise flickered in the woman’s eyes, but she picked up the phone to confirm it, and with a shocked look, she waved Kara over to hand her a card key.

“You’ll need this to get access,” the woman hissed, her curiosity gone as she huffed out, “ and I expect it back when you leave.”

Kara smiled tightly and strode into the elevator with determination. She watched the numbers jump as she soared to the top floor, and almost forgot to breathe when the metal doors slid open to reveal Lena Luthor’s luxurious apartment.

“Hello?” Kara called out, but her voice was barely a whisper as she stepped out of the elevator to glance around. “Miss Luthor?”

Lena strutted to the door, paler than smoke in a black corseted top that contrasted with her skin. Her loose-fitting business pants and heels gave her a professional look, but her hair was down and wavy from the day, and she held a glass of red wine in one hand.

“What’s with the tape recorder?” Lena asked curiously. “I get the appeal of capturing the moment on video, but I don’t see the point in making a soundtrack of moans and dirty talk.“

Scrunching her brows and sipping at her wine, Lena began to glance up and down at Kara’s attire—the soft blue pea coat she wore, her striped button-up and trousers. Her eyes at last settled on the clipboard and notes in Kara’s hand and then she chuckled, not in embarrassment but in realization.

“Oh, my mistake,” Lena softly purred. “You’re not here to sleep with me.”

Tugging her phone from her trouser pocket, Lena read a few texts and clicked on the screen.

“I thought you were my casual hook-up for tonight,” Lena clarified and then extended her hand to Kara. “I’m Lena Luthor. And you are?”

Having a panic attack, Kara thought, as she stared in awe. Her jaw was slack and she almost dropped her clipboard in her rush to extend her hand. She gushed, "I - I'm Kara Danvers, and can I just say I'm a huge fan of everything you accomplish with L-Corp? What you're doing is revolutionary."

Kara shook Lena's hand confidently but then sputtered awkwardly, "I work for Choose To Believe. It's a paranormal website focused on confirming the existence of the supernatural."

Kara left out the part that she was the one who ran the site, and straightened up to assert, "I was hoping to interview you, Miss Luthor, about the rumors currently circulating."

Lena’s smile tightened and she peered down into the depths of her wine glass, which she drained in a few mouthfuls. She beckoned Kara towards the living room, and once they were settled side by side on the white leather couch, she announced, “I’m sure the rumors you’re specifically mentioning were started by ex-lovers. The truth is I just like a little rough play in bed, Kara, but by all means if you want to embellish for the sake of your story, I can give you a few good bites. Sound bites, that is. Ask me your questions?”

Kara reddened at Lena's direct attitude and laughed nervously. "I'm not that kind of journalist, Miss Luthor. I don't embellish my stories. I'm only interested in the truth, even if it's not the lead it turned out to be."
