Finding thanks in difficulty

YouTube is a fickle thing, especially when it comes to add revenue. More so lately than normal.

Some back-end information for you guys: A lot goes into deciding a channel's CPM or Cost Per Mille (that is, how much you get paid per thousand views...roughly). This number is based on all sorts of things including the individual channel, the category the channel is in, various demographics, past success with ads and in general just how much companies are willing to pay to be on a video. Heck even how many ad slots there are in a video matter.

Taken as a whole across YouTube average CPM is highest around the holiday shopping season, and then begins to decline before settling into an average, then increasing again for the next holiday shopping season.

However more recently (as in the past year or so) a lot more can affect this drastically including shenanigans from dumb content creators (i.e. Logan Paul and such) and also by YouTube itself.

Regardless of why, lately YouTube ad revenue has been down for much of YouTube as a whole (perhaps COVID related). First reported by other channels I dug in and sure enough I've seen a pretty sharp decline, actually having a new record low CPM (I wasn't ad ready on YouTube when Logan Paul did his stupid stuff so I've only seen my numbers post those changes).

What does that mean for the channel?

Well, nothing really except that I am once again reminded how lucky I am to have you guys. It frees me even more than I already was from desiring to chase the views or the ever moving target that is YouTube ad revenue. Does that revenue help? Of course it does and I always put it to very good use (I have a separate account just for YT money where it's all invested right back into the channel). But it can ebb and flow as it wishes and I can still be confident in all of you. This means while other channels might freak out a bit I don't have to say, go and cancel some KS pledges in response to this which is fantastic.

Really though, you guys make a world of difference and I am incredibly thankful to have you all here. You guys make more of the content on this channel possible than perhaps you know.

Because I always like to share some stuff that's going on I felt I'd share with you guys before anyone else my plans for a painting video series:

The Ultimate Beginners Guide to Miniature Painting

So what do you think? I'd love to know which one you're most interested in!

Comments

Depends on how much the brush cost? If it cost a buck or two then sure what the heck right? It's when you spend $20+ on a brush where suddenly it better last a good long while :D

The King of Average

Soap and water every so often , I guess it is a reasonable number of minis done.

Hmmm that doesn't seem so bad overall. Did you ever condition them?

The King of Average

How many minis you think they lasted. For me it's all about how much I can paint with then vs the price. Currently using a set that was $1.35 a brush :D

The King of Average

Well I am still interested in brushes as I have a mare with them. I bought the Army Painter set but the have not lasted too long.

Yeah no worries about it :) You can tell how focused I am on it by the fact that I had to go back and look ;) Not something I actively track as I don't use it to gauge any form of success (general comments are much more interesting to me, am I engaging or helping people?) Glad to hear you're interested in that new series. I really do hope it helps people. I feel a lot of the videos for this out there are a bit preachy and assume you want to go out and buy $300 of equipment and start 2 brush blending right away, or try and tell you that the best paint available is some premium online order only paint series :D Ideally my "average" take on things can help some out there!

The King of Average

That is great to know thanks Mark! :)

The King of Average

Oh yeah I hear ya. I don't do it because I feel it'll get a ton of views but instead because I hope it helps some out there. As someone pretty average at it myself I hope to provide a very straightforward, realistic and overall simple videos for it. If I do the first one and it doesn't help anyone then I won't continue the series, but I suspect it might! Plus you know fully well I can't shut up so expect me to say what my favorite paints are, brushes, etc. during the videos as well. As always, you'll get the raw me, for better or worse haha :D

The King of Average

Hiya. Glad you can make it work and do the things you like to do. For painting I am most interested in cleaning and lighting. I use the Army Painter paints and washes.

Mark Manders

Hi KoA, I fear that there are already a lot of high quality videos about these topics. Your unbiased reviews are what makes you sticking out.

Hi Michael, sorry to hear about the YouTube shenanigans. I am glad it is not affecting you too badly. I would be very interested in a painting basic techniques video.
