This is torture. You're welcome.

Hey guys! I hope you had an absolutely awesome week and are looking forward to the weekend :D It's gotten unusually cold here lately which has me staying inside and painting :)

The image above is after about 5 hours of painting. You'll notice I'm doing all of the giant rats as well. This is because I want to paint Oathsworn by Encounter as 1 video - I think it'll make the encounters cool and be more helpful for viewers. It also allows me to take some fun diorama pics of them together :)

You'll also notice I'm painting both Broodmother miniatures :D That's because one of them is going to one of my $10 patrons for their incredibly generous support! Don't worry though, I still have a video to fully announce what I'm giving every single one of you that was here when I hit that 1 million views. We're also close to reaching my next support milestone that has me doing a super in depth look at what I do behind the scenes to make a typical video (not just painting). The mini I do paint there will also be sent out so lots of stuff coming up for you guys :)

Of course you can still expect plenty more in depth posts here on Patreon as well and some more votes :)

Speaking of which, let's discuss the title of this post. This is torture refers to THOSE STUPID RATS ON THE BACK OF THE BROODMOTHER! Ugh. Painting them is the worst. It's not that the detail is bad or anything, it's just there's like 20 million places to paint them. Every time I look I missed under one of their chins, or their back leg or whatever. It seemed to never end. I hope it'll look fantastic once finished but man do I hate bulk painting. Like, absolutely hate it. Thankfully the Giant Rat miniatures are actually two different sculpts so that helps a bit.

Next step is to add a blue wash on the fur. There are two main pictures of the Broodmother. One has her mostly in reds and the other mostly in blues. I went with the one that's actually in the game on her encounter card :) BTW I will be adding some fun technical paints to here like Blood and Vomit from Vallejo :D She's going to look super disgusting hopefully by the end of it all :)

As for the "You're welcome" part, that refers to me helping make everyone's product better :) I don't want this shared outside of Patreon because I'm not trying to boast, and certainly don't want to take the limelight away from Shadowborne Games actually making the changes. 2 days ago I spoke with them about how I would improve the KS even more. This included the following: Daily unlocks. More in depth updates that actually showed some of the cards for the new characters, and to do some fun community events like including a fan art competition.

I imagine if you've read their last update then that might all sound familiar :) Again, not trying to boast, I'm just honestly and sincerely happy any time I find that I've helped make something better for others. That might just mean that my video helped someone or that there are more indexes in rulebook or anything. I care a lot about this industry and it's practices and the fact that I can have a (very small) impact on it is incredibly rewarding.

Speaking of fan art - did you see the second image I attached to this post? I am FLOORED by both the talent many of you guys have but also just the fact that someone would take the time to actually make fan art of me. Believe it or not I don't default into having any sort of ego. In fact I often struggle with self deprecation where I always feel I'm not good enough or always worse than others at something. So when I got this fan art sent to me it makes me feel weird. Not that I don't like it, I love it! It's just that I don't really know how to handle it. To me I'm just...me. I'm not one to put on a show for the camera or try and be something I'm not so when people like my stuff, there's a lot of me in that stuff. Anyway not to get to personal, I just wanted to let you guys know how awesome of a community you all are and how lucky I am to even be a part of it.

Lastly I wanted to share a fun little bit of behind the scenes of Oathsworn. When I first played Oathsworn really early on they wanted me to take a look at their miniature designs. I ended up having a 1.5 hour conversation with Toby as he and I discussed the miniatures, going into a lot of detail about how they'd be painted, fit together, cleaned up and more. It was really great but one thing that was on the table at the time (he wanted to be able to make it work but couldn't in a way that was perfect enough) was to have the rats on her back actually come off. This was because (SPOILER IN CASE IT'S STILL IN THE GAME!) in a future fight you'd fight her but the rats were replaced with nasty boils and pustules and junk so it'd be just 1 mini, but two versions of it. Anyway, there's a neat sort of idea that might or might not have made it into the final game :)

There's still one more SUPER EXCITING thing I want so bad to tell you guys about Oathsworn but I'll hold off and let it naturally reveal itself :) Let's just say it's something I plan on marking on my calendar :D

This is torture. You're welcome. This is torture. You're welcome.

Thanks Max! The painting videos are certainly interesting. What I will say is I've always done what I wanted. My channel doesn't make a ton of money or anything so chasing views isn't the highest goal. Instead my highest reward is knowing my video was well liked and helpful. And if it actually in some small way helps make a positive impact on the industry? I'm all about that. The problem with painting videos isn't the painting really but the editing. I've not put a ton of thought into this (yet) but I might start painting off camera and see how I feel about it. Miniac once spoke about forcing himself to a schedule for painting, but also just recently showed that in the past years he's only painted a single miniature for himself, instead of for a video. I need to find a "healthy" way to continue and incorporate them for sure. Back when I did them more I'd often feel trapped and would often discuss quitting YouTube - I certainly don't want that! This probably warrants some thought and a Patreon post of it's own :)

Very interesting read. I really like the way Shadowborne Games build their game. They are not only open to suggestions, they want them, seek them and use them to add to their game. If they can keep a global view and still modify small elements in its structure it will come out real nice. Latest update (#6) showed how much they want the expertise of other people to complete the great masterpiece they are doing. So you must be pretty happy to be able to participate in this KoA, right? You might not be used to this kind of valorisation (for lack of a better word) but credit where its due, your opinion and the way you analyze miniatures, board games and ks campaigns are well regarded and recognized by some in the business (Archon, and Shadowborne Games for example). I'm happy to see you invested in this, and I look forward to the result of your torture (I knew the rats on her would be a pain!) and the other ones you keep aside till you have time to show them one day. That brings me to a concern. With your channel doing better and better with the KS campaigns and with the unboxing videos, will you still have time to do painting videos? There are many KS rewards coming, and many more campaigns to come, and I know an unboxing video is way less work than a painting one (research, painting, editing) and usually has more views. Thoughts? Keep up the great work King!

Thanks Brian for the compliment :D As for my critiques - they are actually fantastic with that. I had a nice in-depth discussion with Jamie their game developer going point by point on them - and he's the one that started that conversation! While I never try to be mean or cruel, having something negative said about something you create can be rough (I get it with my channel sometimes so I can understand that). He was super great about it all and we discussed his lines of thought as well as mine :) In the end, regardless of what the choose with the bases, it only ever affects large base miniatures which is what? 20-30% of the game as far as I can tell? It comes up when you move them onto characters (so they are pushed away) or when you want to move up to them. It's certainly not the worst thing in the world, but was an oddity I noticed. A rule statement can solve the ambiguity easy enough. Something like "if any portion of a hex is covered that space cannot contain a miniature or terrain piece." It then leaves the kind of odd space between you, but at least the rules then support it so there's no need to make a call on it.

The Broodmother is really coming along nicely. Can't wait to see the final product! I'm happy Shadowborne Games made those changes. I was worried about their KS campaign stalling with still so much time left in it. The Daily Unlock is just brilliant:-) I do hope they take a look at your other suggestion of changing the boss battles so that the bosses completely fit on their locations. Maybe a hex miniature base for the bosses? Not sure how big of a possible headache the current design will be or if it's something we just get used to.
