BTS RM, SUGA, j-hope 'DDAENG (땡)' | REACTION

P Most of the people who dissed them for going global, would trade places with them in a minute. Also, as a global fan, I do love the Korean stuff more, global fans are not just listening to the English songs and collab songs, they are hearing everything, even if they heard the English and collabs first. That is a great success. Ty!

Linda C.

Oh god, I joined your patron just for the Ddaeng reactions, I'm so happy I did HAHA. I'm loving every second of these videos, I'm gonna stay here okay.

Andrea Morlote

Little side note, it infact is not super easy to have hits in the western music industry with just anything, even if they sing or rap in all english. And it is actually only become much more easy to do better in the western music industry, to the point in which it can be done currently, due to BTS truly opening these doors for not onky themselves, but paving the way for those who follow. This is why it is much easier and more excepted today when say Stray Kids, or TXT, etc..... go and do Western promotions. Because trust me, it still isn't the easiest to do, even for BTS in certain circumstances. There are always going to be haters, and they are out doing western artists, and not everyone is too happy about that so to speak. It seems almost like a love- hate relationship sometimes, or atleast thats what I think. And to make mention of this, speaking in all english isn't dumming it down, it is a different type of language and song style, the more pop based songs, so technically all JK did was make it so that it could becmore easily understood and related too, he branched out and tried a different style of music, etc.... That doesn't mean he dummed anything down. That music isn't exactly easy either. All music still takes hard work and dedication. If it was that easy in the western world for artists than everyone would always be a big star, but that is hugely incorrect! And just breaking into the American Music Industry can be extremely challenging, and something many artists try to do over and over but never actually succeed at. Actually what BTS has done in the Western Music Industry is even more impressive to be honest, because they have taken albums with mostly songs sung in Korean and these albums have still become hugely successful in a music market where this is almost unheard of, especially on the level at which they achieved it. If anything, BTS have stayed true to who they are, even on a more cultural level, and they are just too good at what the do to be denied or ignored. But also the world is huge and is made up of all different types of music, art forms, cultures.... and they are simply not sticking to only one thing. They are widening their knowledge and artistic abilities. They are trying different things and pushing themselves to keep growing. It is much harder to be an artist on an international stage, because, well.... there is just so much more. More to learn, to see, to understand, to express, to try, to develope, to branch out into, etc...., etc... But don't forget, this also means their are so many more that will have a more specific opinion about you and your art, and expectations. Standards that others think should be met, etc.... So being on that bigger international stage is grand, but it still comes with the usual things like now there are more people to please, to impress, give good music too, especially now with the meaning of what 'good music', now being way more complex and varying, just depending. Just trying to point out that no being successful on an international level is one of the hardest things to truly achieve, but than once you are with in that new arena, there are all new rules and regulations, expectations, so many more people to try and please. Being on an international level musically, is also just being out where there are just that many more millions and millions to appease, that many more people constantly judging your every move, and just waiting to point out your faults. But yes, it also has all the more amazing parts as well, with that many more people liking your music, and supporting you, etc...., if you can achieve it. The main point here is just because BTS has made being international superstars look glamorous and pretty easy, don't forget they had to work and go through all the sh!t to even come to where they are now on that international stage. And it is a challenge and there is still that other much more harsh side that they still have to deal with. There is aways more than one side to this type of thing, many, many sides is my guess. And being on an International level doesn't just automatically make everything easier and less complicated. I would say in many ways it is probably the opposite. Being in the international spot light just means more eyes on their every move, and just that many more people, companies, etc.... to have to contentd with all the time now. It is a different world of music, but don't forget that doesn't just mean all the new wonderful and good things that exist in that new world of music, but naturally, also comes with all the new rules, regulations, expectations, etc.... that are the reality of this new world of music just as much as anything else.

Irene (DragonsWrathxxx)

I think it's less about just because they're global they're better, I always viewed it as their haters and such are small minded and, especially those from the past, didn't recognise BTS rapline as rappers etc because they were also idols - saying that those haters are small minded in their views rather than it being comparable to Korea as the well. I mean sure BTS made English songs and things more palatable towards western audiences but they also made songs in Japanese for that audience etc, I don't think it takes away from their Korean roots and culture at all. (But also I agree when Yoongi says K-pop is too small a category to put them in) I get where you're coming from but I think after listening to more of their work you'll see that BTS always celebrate their culture and identity as Korean and aren't 'dumbing it down' but just trying something new (which is fun)

Yasuwu

I honestly love Yoongis verses when it just sounds like he's laughing/mocking all the people that look down on BTS, like I love it so much when you can hear him laughing through his words

Yasuwu

Please Please please do cyphers 1-4. You see the progression of the rap line, from being young kids trying to emulate their favorite 90s-00s rap inspirations to the full-blown rappers they became. They talk their shit! 3 and 4 are my favorite and the live medley of all of them is a must see. The crowd takes it to another level.

Jessica Whelan

yes please !

LuluSlayer

Hi Teddy, thanks for all the reactions! Can you please react BTS - Ddaeng but by the Vocal Line, I think you would enjoy it. Thank you for your hard work 🙌

AKphotographyblog

Yesss!!!!🙌🙌🙌

Rozaliyah

totally seconding spine breaker! that one and paldogansan are some of my favorite songs of all time

Aaron S.

I recommend spine breaker by bts. And please react to timeless - drunken tiger ft rm I don't know English, but does anyone know of a correct translation of this song?

Susana Solano

Eagerly awaiting your next BTS reaction 😍 checking here everyday xx

Sarah wingrove

woah just seeing this now, maybe you have a misconception that BTS/BTS MEMBERS isn’t big in korea or sumn which is wildly inaccurate. Jungkook or other BTS solo’s are not ‘dumbing it down for a western audience’ bc ‘koreans wouldn’t take it’ i mean Seven/3D was the biggest song in Korea and other BTS members won korean awards for their solo projects. Jungkook chose to do english tracks because he wanted to challenge himself, why not conquer another music market?? what’s wrong with that?? they already got their home country on lock n japan (2nd biggest music market) why not america ?? what’s wrong w that ? Jungkook singing in english is “dumbing it down n “the worst song” okay. Teddy i see you on yt turning up to some of the weirdest/worst korean songs but okay, jungkook is the one w horrible songs n weak lyrics lol. here’s my take, if bad bunny drops an english album, no one bats an eye or persecute him but then now jk does it suddenly it’s ’koreans won’t have it’ lmao. i would want to believe you’re talking from a place of ignorance on how big they are in korea. There is a history behind namjoon’s verse which is that some korean artist/Institutions have always looked down on BTS and mocked them. They were not from the Big 3, which only had power within korea. I believe what namjoon is referencing here is that they can continue to play big fish with their influence within korea while they (BTS) have the REAL INFLUENCE outside korea. You don’t really understand the mistreatment bangtan faced bc of their lack of ‘influence’. So yes, namjoon can curse them out to die within korea while bts makes the world their stage. However this is not so much so the case anymore since BTS is such a household name in korea bringing in trillions of dollars to Korea.

Sorry I keep requesting things, but I think you'd really like Intro:Skool Luv Affair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCYQgVwV_0U&list=RDzCYQgVwV_0U&start_radio=1

Rozaliyah

This song was my 'Most Played Song' of 2023 on Youtube Music😆🔥🔥🔥 So glad you watched the explanation video although you had already grasped the awesomeness of the lyricism before it so go you👏👏👏 I agree with you about their "western works" especially JK's collabs with Latto and Jack Harlow. They ruined the songs for me. Their lyrics were gross! I wish he did 'Seven' as a duet or some remix collab with Craig David, that would've been AMAZING!!!

Rozaliyah

Teddy, could you please react to Born Singer https://youtu.be/oH4IZw9PYgk?si=LJKi9zvelCWJxdi8 Namjoon absolutely goes off in his verse. So incredible!

Nicole

Love that song, such a Gem. Sadly most of the lyric videos on YouTube will only scratch the surface of the worldplays they’re using. That’s why I recommended Doolsetbangtan as a source, since they’re explaining every single detail! I understand tho that it’s difficult to use in a video

Angi

Please react to Cypher Parts 1-4

Claws

This is such a lovely comment 💜

BTSOT7

Ah I did think people may misunderstand my intentions when I said that. I don’t think they were taking shots at BTS but more acknowledging the hole that will be left when BTS members are militarised. I think it was more a show of respect if anything! But this sort of thing is very common within rap, to use callbacks or double entendres to make a statement. So the dots just connected too neatly for me not to think it’s associated lol, but I’m a sucker for a good conspiracy theory! 😭😂

Teddy Grey

BTS have always struggled with people telling them that they lost their korean identity (they released a song called IDOL in response to that btw) when out of their 200+ discography, they've only released 3 english songs that were meant to be gifts to non-korean ARMY's. JKs was the only album that was heavily catered to the west and there were reasons for that, the others' solo debuts were definitely not catered to the west. Being the best can be both subjective and objective; you can subjectively think another group is better but there is also the fact that BTS have changed kpop forever because they didn't want other groups that came after them to have to experience what they went through and they've touched on this a lot (Snooze by SUGA is a great example). They were shunned heavily and made fun of by the media and artists that they looked up to when they debuted just because they were nobodies that came from a small company on the verge of bankruptcy and they had to get creative with their promotions which popularised them outside of korea first, no one had done that. That started growing their popularity in korea, then they got shunned again for their initial popularity in the west, people deeming them as sell outs, even though that truly was the only option they had with the whole industry against them. Basically, no one is ever happy with BTS no matter what they do and so they decided to focus on ARMY and their identities as artists rather than try and please everyone that has an opinion on them... also yes, MIC drop is awesome and you should definitely react to it next (sorry for this very long winded message💀)

Emily

Thanks for your reaction Teddy! Great and in depth as always. We saw JYP and YG but it's because their monopoly on the music market at the time (along with SM). Worth to mention is that Freeze and Ddaeng probably have no connection. I think no one in their right mind, let alone Stray Kids, who are literally fanboying BTS, would dare to even call out BTS in any way in this era. It's their 11th year since debut and they practically showed who's boss by their 3rd year. By now probably everyone in the Korean music industry knows if they talk smack about BTS, the rap line's response would be quick and the argument - over (Cyphers leggoo). Side note, unrelated to this but God it's fun to imagine: grown-ass men were afraid to do rap battles against 15 year old RM. His first mixtape is brutal, shame it's not on most streaming platforms.

Kill Bill

One more time don’t get stuck in a word ! And if you measure what they are saying they’re not only talking about the USA though it’s right but they are world wide , I mean they did a concert in here “Saudi Arabia “ in the biggest stadium and it was fully full in 2019 bedside that they were the first artist to do a concert in a stadium here I’m just giving u an example and until now none of the k pop groups come here again and did what they did , you have to get to know them very well , you can’t judge a book just by reading the title .. I love u man don’t get me wrong .. and there’s a songs that simply resembles our small universe “ magic shop and mikrokosmos “ for this two I would suggest u to watch them live it’s really different and there’s some thing I wanna say all of the BTS members choose to do their solo album with Korean producers except for Jungkook and he said on one of his lives that he wasn’t planning to do it in English but scooter brown and the others offered him and he accepted it and if u like RM you have to see his other side in “ wild flower “ I think the lyrics will be relatable to you somehow .. best of luck , love u and no matter what u say I’ll keep on watching u 💜💜💜💜

Duaa Mhmd

Wait, why isn’t anyone recommending Run bts 😭😭 he would defo like that

Tham

You would have enjoyed the live performance so much 😭😭 BTS kills it in their live performances. Even if you don’t record your reaction to it, you should totally check it out live. You may break your wall again tho, so be careful 😭😭

Ale

One of my favorites….the cypher medley live is legendary if you want a clearer grasp of how all three rappers blend their styles so well together. It’s a performance that a hows the difference between rappers who are idols vs idols who rap. Their command, breath control, and energy is unmatched. Also please keep in mind that with these lyric videos, the most popular/recommended ones tend to have lazy/incorrect translations. I wouldn’t take the older popular lyric video translations too literally.

Shalala Falala

Also FIRE is great - all members & there’s an official music video with translations 👏🏻

Alexandra Miller

Cyphers for talk your shit and Tear because it’s the best 💕 Doolset has the best translations for sure so the videos other people linked using that is perfect!! I also think you would like 2021 Festa BTS live Room - such a good medley to get a flavor of their other songs….then people can recommend more based off what you like in that!! They have so many songs it’s hard to pick and we want you to hear them all 😂

Alexandra Miller

Shoutout to you knowing who dumbfounded is. I've been listening to his stuff for years and I don't know anyone that isn't Asian that actually knew who he was even in the rap community.

김수미 KChick97

I really recommend the song Tear by the rap line. They wrote it when BTS almost split up around 2018. Lyrics to that mean more when you know they wrote it for each other. The live video that has the lyrics to it! https://youtu.be/UDuaJGYe8EQ?si=Uu2zcWVyefxzqVsU

Naomi H

This is the link for the making of Ddaeng https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEiT2mO97fA

Nicole

As a Suga bias I sense another suga bias emerging...😈 Although I suspect Jimin might be coming for you also...

Cherryripe

I see you asking on another comment about links for cyphers, and I recommend Enjoy BTS More bc they use Doolset translations and Doolset (a wordpress site) is famously one of or even the best BTS lyric translators, outside of BTS and Hybe themselves. Not sure if you want performances with subs or specifically colour coded, so I shared both. ARMY pls heart this up so that we know Teddy is using some trusted fave versions 💜 Cypher pt 1 colour coded : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgX7Vy9u5CM Cypher pt 2 colour coded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLF_1UMDtE0 Cypher pt 3 colour coded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmW5DjM2JfU Cypher pt 4 colour coded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MwN_9WNp3I Cypher pt 3 MOST RECENT performance from 2022 with eng sub: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhd4EGb7v-8 (personal fave of mine it goes off) Medley performance (BANGER), famous and popular with ARMY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT930XF1vzA Cypher pt 4 performance with eng subs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoZT52SUCMw Another personal fave of mine but is actually part of J JHopes solo headline at lollapalooza, you might want to save this for another time. It includes Cypher pt 1 and another couple BANGERS of J Hope's solo work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVwPFBd8wRg

Cherryripe

Great reaction thanks! Speaking to their solo projects JK's was the only all English album and heavily promoted in the US. Jimin and Suga I believe made one appearance on a late night talk show and that was it. Suga did go on tour with about half of the stops in the US and the other half in Korea/Japan. Jhope, RM and V all made the decision to primarily promote their albums in Korea however Jhope did perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago shortly after his album released. All that being said it was basically left up to the members how they wanted their albums to be promoted. In the early years when Big Hit was a small company they did not have the pull with traditional promotion platforms (Korean tv, music shows, radio). If you were not a group from the big three then promotion was problematic. Because of this bts had to find other ways of promoting their music. They did YouTube vlogs of their daily lives months prior to debut. They did song covers and the rappers would put out content with their lyrics over another artists beats. They grew quicker outside of Korea first and then at some point started gaining fans at home. Wow that was alot! Sorry lol. 😊💜

Theresa Tucker

If you are a fan of "talk yo shit" then you would love all 4 of the rap lines cyphers! In the intro you watched where RM and Suga were in an interview and the guy commented on them wearing makeup and looking like girls...that's B-Free a fellow rapper whose career BTS destroyed! The cyphers are destroying all the haters and the rapping is chefs kiss!

Jessica Campbell

Oh wow I didn’t know they were close like that! I know the kids have a huge respect for BTS though and they’ve openly called out people that hate on them as being jealous (which I definitely agree with!). It’s weird but I would think out of all of them, Han and Suga would be the closest because of the subject matter in their songs and love of rap/hiphop 🤔

Teddy Grey

It’s so crazy because I only got my first Spotify account in 2020, before that I was solely on soundcloud and never came across this song! 🤯 I’m definitely going to have to check out the vocal lines rendition too 👀 and thank you for continuing to watch me even after disagreeing! I’ve disagreed with all of my favourite reactors at some point but I still have their Patreons too, so I love that energy! 🫶

Teddy Grey

Could you direct me to an accurate lyric video for that please? I’d love to hear their hiphop origins!!

Teddy Grey

Thank you for letting me know the producer credits! Suga’s a lej 🫡

Teddy Grey

👀 I’m waiting for a Red Lights/Taste kinda vibe but I want it to come organically so I’m slapped with the full effect of it loool

Teddy Grey

I really want to do the Cyphers next! Please, if you can, let me know which lyric videos are accurate and if I should watch the corresponding explanation videos, if so, which ones? GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANK YOU! 🫶

Teddy Grey

Baepsae dance practice is also iconic and a must!!

Nicole

You're correct that Ddaeng came out before Freeze. This is from 2018. Mic Drop actually came out the same year so I agree there's some cross over there. BTS and Stray Kids have always seemed to have a very respectful relationship. There's a clip of Bang Chan giggling over Jimin mentioning Felix in an YT video he did, and Jimin calls Felix "YongBok ssi" which is like referring to Felix as an equal if i remember correctly. It's super cute.

SingingRazors

I really enjoyed this reaction. Thank you! I vastly prefer their Korean songs over the English ones. Some of the English songs are bops, but usually the subject matter isn't interesting to me personally. For Solo's I really do love all the albums except for Jungkook's. I don't dislike it, but it didn't hit me like the others. He has some other great songs though, and I loved standing next to you.

IBG_Music

Ddaeng was a gift to ARMY that they uploaded on SoundCloud, we are all still begging for it on other streaming services! They also did a live performance where the vocal line covers it, which is hilarious in some parts (because most of them are NOT rappers) and just all around a great time. Here's the link if you're interested! https://youtu.be/e76cjiENpGU?si=qZdhii3GRQms8iI8 I'm so glad you're finally checking them out, I really enjoy your opinions even if we disagree!

NotCaseyKasem⁷

Fire reaction!!! They have a track called 'Hip Hop Lover/Hip Hop Phile' in which they explain individually their relationship with hip hop (like mentioning a lot of BIG names as well); but yeah it could be helpful for you to understand their origin

Fanni Kónya

Ddaeng was produced by Suga and El Capitxn

v_endd

for bts korea already worships them so it only makes sense for them to go more global… but i personally prefer their korean songs As for jungkook I would listen to any language that man sings in.. just remember the ON bridge!!!

W V

If you wanna hear flirty Kim Namjoon then you should definitely listened to Look Here 🔥🔥

Nicole

BTS is really known for wearing their hip-hop/rap references on their sleeves. If you want to check out an old old BTS song that pays homage to that check out “Hip Hop Phile”

Maggie Zach

Thanks for the reaction Teddy. Which song do you plan on reacting to next? You said you’d let us know so we can recommend the best lyric video 🙂

Nicole

This song was definitely a class act. Thank you for your reaction. Looking fwd to your next reaction 😊 I think you’ve already been recommended the cyphers (which are great fun to listen to) but it’s also worth listening to some B-sides of these guys too along with the likes of Baepsae (silver spoon) with the explanation, Shadow (by Suga), First Love (Suga), Forever rain (RM)

Nadia Shaik

still waiting for Cypher pt.5 (feat. V) 😭

v_endd

Ok, currently watching but a thing you mentioned about the romanization and the syllables. The Korean language itself is written in syllable blocks. So for ilsam, ㅣ ㄹ ㅍ ㅏ and ㄹ are all separate letters but they are written as 일팔 (ㅇ is an empty place holder if the syllable starts with a vowel) so random bit of into there 😊

SingingRazors

There’s a Bangtan bomb (behind the scenes) video of them creating this song and then rehearsing with the other members hyping them up (especially V). V is probably the rapline’s number 1 fan. I def recommend it bc it’s just fun to watch😭💜 also there’s a special performance where the vocal line raps this too

Zo

there is also a performance video of the vocal line doing DDAENG you should check it out if you have time!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQRrc3PEITc&ab_channel=BTSPurpleYou

v_endd

frrrrrr

v_endd

It’s a crime that Ddaeng isn’t on Spotify😭
