Kingdom Episode 5 [Part 2]

The highlighted performance when BTOB was brainstorming is from Queendom (the OG Kingdom, basically), and the group featured is MAMAMOO. To be completely honest, I’m kinda surprised your more regular viewers haven’t requested them yet. While you have your personal preferences [as we all do], you clearly appreciate anyone with artistic skill and genuine love for music. So even if the music isn’t always to your liking, I think you could still enjoy them a lot. Moonbyul, the main/only-ish rapper in MAMAMOO, writes her own lyrics; she consequently became the most credited female idol. Moonbyul was a singer but the other 3 members have BIG voices (e.g., Mariah, Xtina, etc.) and it led to her being less confident in her vocal ability, so she became ‘the rapper.’ (She continued to work on her singing skills, contributing vocals more and more over the years. Plus, her rap-style kinda evolved from being a singer.)

Oh by the way, in the Stay fandom the open secret is that MNET is a notorious hypocrite (aka 🐍) towards SKZ (long history between them not agknowledging them on award shows only to give them last minute invites for clout and also kinda dissing them in kingdom with editing out Hyunjin even when he was proven innocent, etc.). Also there is no surprise that Mnet is known for using cheap or even illegal (one PD got into prison over some past rigged voting) tacticts in voting so their so-called experts must be just random workers in their company that got asked to watch the performances without an OUNCE of artistic knowdledge. Just a heads-up.

The harmonies in that song did me in. They arranged and sang the song perfectly. And it actually makes me cry every time I watch it. Of course I knew Seungmin can sing but damn he shined in that song. EunKwang and YunHo killed it as well, somehow their voices matched perfectly.

I'm excited for him to see Love Poem, too! Of course, I'm sure he'll love Colors. But I love me some prime Seungmin content. I'm more of a rap fan, too, and Love Poem nearly makes me cry.

The sports day was fun to watch, to see the groups from another side...but I think it wont be a bad thing if you skip that. What I am more excited about are the episodes after that because we will get units, and those units were amazing. I really want to know what you think about the rap units.

Every time I rewatch this episode, I get mad. SKZ got screwed by the “experts.” Those experts weren’t ready for them being different but that’s not what an expert does. They should be evaluating the singing, performance, dancing etc…not whether they don’t like a dark performance. SKZ truly recreated the song.

Oh wow, I agree with both you and Hyla and feel like you worded it perfectly. It’s certainly more the unpopular opinion and I’m about to prob make some more mad. Ever since the competition when watching reactors and they ask for content suggestions and everybody starts chiming in about the ‘I’ll Be Your Man” performance and it’ll be the best you’ve ever heard. I’m screaming NOOO! Stop! I completely ❤️L O V E❤️our guys and was sad to see them disappointed after all their hard work. I just feel SKZ was capable of more and that’s not on I.N either. 🥹🫶🏼

I'm going to echo what Hyla Dickinson said, that SKZ's take was too much of a departure from a known and beloved song. Having watched all these performances again and again with different reactors, too, I've been able to hear different feelings about them. While SKZ had a story, I think the ending of it is what lowered it in the ranking for me. As great as each individual piece was -- the rapping, the duet -- it was too chaotic for me _together_ and diminished each part as a result. Also, there's something to be said for how top tier the other performances were overall; there wasn't a demonstrably bad performance in the round. I was surprised with the results, too, the first time I watched it, but in subsequent watches, I feel more like it was simply not SZK best effort in this context. Sadly, ambition doesn't always yield the highest results.

many of the experts aren't actually experts in music/performances, they're other people in the industry and many have their typical korean lukewarm/no dark stuff standards. honestly so lame and lee know demanding to know who the "experts" are afterwards was just another indication how they felt about the ranking

The ‘what was that another kingdom’ was a performance by the girl group Mamamoo on the show Queendom which was a prequel to Kingdom.

Ps Just a fun side note Bang Chan is extremely competitive especially when sports are involved. The members always joke that their Leader is good at everything lol. Also Minhyuk is the member of BTOB that ripped his shirt off at the end last name Lee.

Please react and post the next episode its the field day episode and it's super warm and fun to see the groups compete in sports. It's very funny and lighthearted I would love to see your reactions to it. Also in korean culture it is important to be humble it's not that they don't want to win but there is also this mutual respect for the others their competing with. They are very driven by the mindset that they can always improve or do something better.

I agree. My thinking is also that they didn’t have a clear story from beginning to end for most of them while watching like in Episode 2 for SF9 same thing. They didn’t have the luxury of rewinding it back like we’ve had for two years now.

Oh, and I hope you do actually watch and post the next episode even though it doesn't have performances, it is totally hilarious.

The only reason I can figure for the very very low scores for Skz on this is that the original song was really beloved in the Korean pop world, and they changed it from a heartfelt love song into a very dark, non-romantic anthem with demons and death. I think it was hard for the "experts" and the other idols to swallow that huge shift. You can hear it in the post-performance reviews by the other idols, a lot of them sound really lukewarm, like "They really tried hard and put in a lot of effort" which means basically "We didn't like it and didn't think it was very good but we are required to say nice things on camera". That's often my first reaction to a cover or re-make that is really really different than the original, at first I just don't like it at all, it takes time for me to come around to how fabulous it really is.

Teddy, just for an update on KOMCA credited songs for 3RACHA - as of 3/14/2023 Bang Chan has 151 Changbin has 129 Han has 125 They are the 1st, 2nd & 3rd most credited 4th gen idols and 9th, 14th and 16th OVERALL!! (Compared to almost exactly this time 2 years ago they said it sat at about 80 songs on Kingdom)

as an atiny i'm really proud of my ateez bc of the fact that they are finally noticed with their incredible performances... bc wtf, they did LITERALLY brought their lore to kingdom, they did such an amazing job: dances from san and yunho, vocals from jongho and other members, swaggy raps from hongjoong... they deserved it. but as a stay i'm so desperate... just bc of the high note that i.n didn't sing properly they put them so low?! what was wrong besides it?! they sang LIVE, they danced while singing, changbin did rap that was performed by TWO members of btob originally, their performance has a deep meaning... ALL the points. they shouldn't put skz that low. maybe 4th place or 3th, but not 5th and 6th...

I just watched all your new uploads in one go! I was watching Kingdom as a baby STAY as it went on, and you've got me revisiting all the anxiety and tears. Kingdom is also how I found out about ATEEZ and BtoB (Mayfly forever!). Looking forward to the next episode! P.S. I'd love to see your reaction to Hongjoong's cover of Lemon Tree, it's not your style, but it is fun. He also did an amazing cover of Linkin Park's Numb.

I've never seen skz more pissed off than after they ranked 5th and 6th for this performance. It was a badddddd day for everyone and for absolutely NO reason. Up until the interview afterwards, we thought I.N's voice crack was on purpose because of the nature of the song itself. The "experts" were insane for giving them 6th, but it did motivate us to stream tf out of the performance lmao

The First vote was the "experts", (sixth place) and then the 2nd vote added in the other teams votes. So, they didn't get a ton of votes and the Boyz didn't get any votes from other teams. But the voting was weird because each team wasn't giving points, they were just picking their top three. So, it was possible for a team to not get picked. It didn't really mean they weren't good. The expert vote was wack though. I really don't know what happened that week. I don't know what they were looking for because they ended up with a super weird ranking.

Kingdom was such a sad time for SKZ. Ateez definitely deserved first but I feel like SKZ should’ve placed higher than 6th place with the amazing vocals and rapping ☹️
