The Unicorn Disco

Author's Note: This was originally produced back in 2021 for a short story collection, but was sadly turned down. I did post to DA briefly a month or two later, but took it down in case I wanted to try submitting it again. I decided this would make a great first post for my Patreon!

The Unicorn Disco

by Monkey-Scientist

Some people say that disco is dead, which isn't true at all. Disco is alive, it's just not as relevant anymore. Of course, disco clubs aren't that easy to find nowadays. Some, however, are often hidden out of plain view. Some are even of a mystical or mysterious persuasion, including one that was run by magical talking horses! One man had stumbled across such a magical place, which left him with a fun experience he would never forget.

Rocks and dirt were kicked across the ground as a pair of clean white shoes stomped against the sidewalk. These shoes belonged to James, an average 30-year-old man with brown hair and a fairly slender build. He wore his usual blue-jeans and red T-shirt, along with the aforementioned white runners.

During his walk, James came upon a street he had never been on before. It was called "Unicorn Avenue" and it took him off guard! Walking from a familiar street to this one was like entering a different universe. Everything was unnaturally clean and pristine when compared to every other part of the city.

"How odd," James said to himself as he journeyed down the strange street.

Weirder still, the streets were completely vacant; not a person or animal in sight. His walking eventually lead him to a strange black building. Atop the building was an unfinished sign that simply read "Disco". It appeared the sign was still being constructed, as there were bits of metal above it. James couldn't make out what the other word was supposed to be, but he found himself strangely entranced by the building all the same.

James scratched at his messy brown hair, "People still disco dance in this day and age?"

His curiosity had piqued, prompting him to investigate the building. He walked inside and could hear loud 70s music blasting from inside, along with what sounded like tap-dancing shoes being stomped against the ground. This confused James, as he didn't think that people tap-danced at discos! He chalked this up to the club being an experimental place and ventured further inside.

He walked through a long hallway until he found a shimmering rainbow of colors peaking out from behind a door. He walked up to the door, the music getting louder and louder with each step he took. He opened the door a crack and peered inside, surprised by what he found!

The people inside weren't people at all, but rather magical unicorns! They were all dancing to the beat of the song, while a unicorn in the middle shot light from his horn like a disco-ball. Another unicorn was in the corner and spinning a vinyl record on her horn to play music, as if she was some kind of DJ. James quickly discovered that the tap-dancing he thought he heard earlier was just the hooves of the unicorns stomping against the ground.

James gasped at the sight of the magical horses, he couldn't believe unicorns were real! He had been told his whole life that they were simply fairy tales, but here they were having a party! James wanted to take a closer look and opened the door a bit more. Unfortunately, he pushed too hard and the door let out a loud "CREEEEEEEEAK" as it opened wide. The unicorns abruptly stopped partying and turned to look at the human. James smiled nervously, “Uh... Hi,"

He awkwardly waved at them, not knowing what else to do. The magical horses approached James, gathering around him. The pink unicorn that had been using his horn as a makeshift disco ball bent down to sniff the human's hair.

"H-Hey, that tickles!"

The unicorn stamped his hoof in annoyance, "What? You're not going to offer me a carrot or something?"

"You can talk?!" shouted James in disbelief.

The unicorn snorted and smiled, "Of course we can! You just saw us partying and using our magic, is us talking really so far-fetched?"

James shrugged his shoulders nervously and stammered, "I-I guess not,"

The unicorn laughed at the man, "No need to be so nervous, we don't eat humans or anything. We actually love them, in fact!"

"Oh, that's good. My name is James by the way,"

"Pleasure to meet you! I'm Darren Disco-Horn, professional partying unicorn. This is my fine establishment: The Unicorn Disco," stated Darren with a giddy whinny.

James smacked his forehead, "Oh, so that's what the sign out front was trying to say!"

"My apologies for that, unicorn magic is powerful, but not fine-tuned to proper construction work. We'll be sure to fix up that sign soon!"

"It's pretty impressive that you can use magic to fix stuff up without hands. What else can you do with it, aside from throw awesome parties?" asked James with a smile.

Darren flicked his tail around, "Why don't you party with us and find out?"

"I don't know, this seems more like a unicorn-centric party and I'm human. I wouldn't want to risk ruining your good time or getting trampled by mistake,"

Darren snickered in response to James' comment, "If you're so nervous about it, how about I make you into a unicorn?"

James gasped,"You can do that?!"

"Yep, watch and learn!"

Darren then bent his head over as his horn began to shine. He built up energy in his horn before blasting James with it, bathing him in its magnificent light. The light caused James' fingers and toes to draw together, fusing and morphing into black horse's hooves! The hooves grew larger as they burst from his shoes, sending pieces of fabric flying everywhere.

His slender body began to bulk up with muscle, causing rips and tears in his shirt and pants. His steadily increasing muscle-mass forced him onto all fours, which was followed by his spine reshaping and locking him into his new stance. The changes were rather comfortable and not painful in the slightest.

James smiled as he basked in his changes, "Man, this feels rather relaxing,"

As his body was continually bathed in the unicorn’s bright light, he found himself enjoying the changes more and more. He thought becoming something else would be painful, but the unicorn's soothing magic quickly eased him into his transformation. It felt like a massage designed to bring out his inner animal and he enjoyed every second of it!

Darren smiled as he continued to shine his transforming light upon James, "You haven't seen anything yet!"

The light from Darren's horn grew even brighter, accelerating James' transformation. He found his face stretching out into an equine muzzle, his teeth and lips growing bigger in the process. His eyes were pushed to the sides of his head, dividing his vision down the middle. His nostrils grew larger, affording him a greater sense of smell. His ears moved to the top of his head and transformed into long and pointy horse ears. These longer ears increased his sense of hearing, allowing him to hear even the quietest of sounds.

His hair grew longer and shaggier, forming into a long brown horse's mane. This was followed by a strange feeling in his tailbone, which made it feel like something was growing there! His tailbone grew longer, as both flesh and bone pushed outwards.

This growth formed into a tail, which quickly became covered in brown horse hair! The tail burst out from his trousers, ripping the back of his pants and underwear to pieces in the process. His brown tail matched his mane in color and appearance, much to James' excitement. The idea of having a matching tail and mane was appealing to him!

The growth of his new tail was quickly followed by orange hairs sprouting out from random spots on his skin. These hairs grew longer and thicker, quickly blanketing his body in its warm embrace. The growth of his new orange-colored coat caused even more rips in his already torn clothing.

Lastly, the most important part of the transformation took hold of the soon-to-be unicorn! A small white bump on his head formed, quickly sprouting into a magnificent unicorn horn! After that last change, the bits of clothes left on James' body floated into the air and swirled around each other. The pieces of ripped clothing merged back together, forming into the clothes they once were. The clothes were then levitated to the corner of the room, out of everyone's way. After his transformation had completed, James took a moment to examine his new equine form.

He was now on four legs, with hard black hooves replacing his feet and hands. His body was filled with muscle, making him feel stronger than he ever had before. He found himself covered from head-to-toe in a coat of orange hair, while a shiny white horn jutted out from his forehead. James took a few steps on his new hooves and was surprised to find that he was easily able to walk on all fours! "Wow, I'm a natural in this form!" exclaimed James.

"Of course you are, the magic makes it so you get used to your new form right away. It makes you feel as if you were born this way!”

"This isn't permanent I hope,"

Darren smirked and winked, "Don't worry, you'll only stay a unicorn as long as you're on Unicorn Avenue. If you want to change back to normal, all you have to is leave. And if you want to try being a unicorn again, you can always just return afterwards,"

This caused a smile to form across James' long face, "That sounds good to me! Though I have a question: Why does it feel like I'm the only human (or rather, former human) on this street?"

"It's because of a magic spell placed on this street. The magic makes it so that normally only unicorns can see and enter the street. However, the magic is special in that every once and a while, it'll allow one human the ability to see it. Of course, most humans tend to run away from the street as soon as they enter it. The unnatural cleanliness of this street usually freaks them out."

"Well, I'm glad I didn't turn tail and run, then!"

"Yeah, you wouldn't be able to party with us if you did!" replied Darren.

Just then, the DJ unicorn James had seen earlier trotted up. She had a coat of magnificent green hair and a dark green mane, giving her a rather earthen look. "Are we gonna get back to partying, or what?"

"Sorry about that! Was just welcoming our friend into the fold and answering some questions." Said Darren.

"It's fine! Is he ready to party with us though?"

"Of course, it's something I can't say NEIGH to!" quipped James, causing the other unicorns to collectively roll their eyes.

"We got to work on your puns, man! Regardless, let's get this show back on the road!" shouted the DJ unicorn. She then used her magic to summon a vinyl record out of nowhere. She magically levitated the vinyl record above her horn and slowly lowered the record onto it. She began to spin the record using her horn, allowing her to play it in the same way a human DJ would!

Catchy dance music emanated from the spinning record, prompting all the unicorns around to start galloping to the beat. Having quickly acclimated to his new form, James joined in the equine celebration! His hard hooves clomped loudly against the ground as he bucked to the beat. Despite the many horses stomping their hooves against the floor, it surprisingly never caved in!

As everyone danced, Darren lifted his horn back up. Various lights projected from his horn, allowing his horn to act as a disco-ball once more! The pretty lights excited James even further, causing him to stomp harder to the beat!

James found himself enamoured with his new form and how it danced. He felt so majestic, so free, and so energetic! His increased muscle-mass allowed him to gallop back and forth with ease.

James even got in on the magical partying himself, by managing to make his horn glow green. He used his horn as a makeshift glow-stick, waving it around to the beat. Sadly, he wasn’t able to do much more with his horn than that. He was pretty new to being a unicorn, after all!

They partied for several hours until nightfall, before eventually tiring out. After the party, all the unicorns left to return to their homes. James exited the building with Darren and the DJ unicorn, conversing with them as they trotted along.

The DJ unicorn snickered as she playfully flared her nostrils, "You sure know how to party, "James Jumping-Hooves"!"

"Wait, that's my unicorn name?! That sounds kind of cool, actually!" Exclaimed the brown unicorn.

"Knew you'd like it! My name is Sammy Spinning-Horn, by the way!" Replied the DJ unicorn.

James grinned from ear-to-ear, "Good to meet you, Sammy! That was some party! I haven’t moved like that in some time… ah well, I better head home though,"

Before he could leave, however, Darren and Sammy stopped him. "Woah there, horsey! It's a little too late to head home now, especially since a lot of the streets connected to ours are fairly dangerous."

Sammy whinnied and eagerly waved her hairy tail around, "Oh, I know! Why don't you crash at our place, James?"

"Sure, you two seem fairly nice, and I'd love to see more of this place!" Exclaimed the brown unicorn.

Sammy galloped off in a hurry, "Follow me then!"

"Man, she's as giddy as a pony." stated James.

Darren snickered, "Wouldn't expect anything less of my mate!"

James' eyes opened wide in surprise, "Wow, I didn't know you two were in a relationship… though I suppose that would explain why you live together"

Darren smiled and playfully smacked James' flank with his tail. "Of course! Party animals party best together! Anyway, let's shake a hoof!" Exclaimed Darren as he galloped after his mate.

James frantically ran after them, "Hey, wait up!"

James followed the unicorn couple to a nearby stable, which was something the orange unicorn wasn't expecting. "Huh? Where's the magical grove with beds made out of crystal?"

"You know not everything we unicorns have is all magical and pretty, right?" Asked Sammy with a smirk.

"Of course I knew that! I was just expecting unicorns to live more lavishly."

"You do realize that the end of the day, we're just horses with horns right? We may be magical, but there are some things we don't need." Stated Darren.

James chuckled bashfully, "Makes sense to me!"

Darren turned and motioned with his tail for James to follow, "Now that we've got that cleared up, off to bed!" The three entered the stables and prepared to sleep after a good day of partying. It was an eventful day and James was happy to make some new friends and spend time as a unicorn! Now all he had to do to sleep was figure out how to sleep standing up. Easier said than done...
