It will make more sense why Hua Cheng couldn’t let Xie Lian take this blame as we go through the story. Let’s just say Xie Lian is too kind for his own good, and repeatedly places himself in the line of fire and takes on all the suffering, without taking care of himself at all. Hua Cheng sees this, and knows that someone needs to take care of the sweet bean, because no one else is capable or willing to do so besides him — especially not Xie Lian himself. And too often, the truth does hurt, but it’s Xie Lian’s toxic trait to take that pain for the sake of others, to extreme extents. Just because he’s a god doesn’t mean he deserves that either. If you ever read the novels, you’ll understand why this sort of behavior from Hua Cheng is a huge part of his entire character and why he even exists. It’s also why personally he is my favorite of all MXTX’s characters ✌️

Hua Cheng is cute though, the thought behind the action is cute but the delivery...not so much

That's one of my issues with Hua Cheng. While I understand he did it out of love and he meant well, the fact is that he did what *he* wanted without considering Xie Lian's feelings on the matter. Which side is right is hard to say, but I take issue with Hua Cheng going "I don't like how he talked to you so I'm going to ruin his life more or less because *I* think he should appreciate you more". To me, that is a selfish thing to do, especially without letting Xie Lian know what his plan was. I'm more than sure there was a compromise they could have come to if they had just talked it out. (Not that MXTX couples are great at actually talking things out though lol) It's one of the reasons I prefer Lan Wangji over Hua Cheng: Lan Wangji will do what is right, certainly, but I feel like he's more dedicated to doing things in a better way and more considerate of Wei Wuxian's wants and feelings than Hua Cheng did here... and I think he would have asked Wuxian first before just doing it. (But that's just my opinion!) Can't wait for the next episode!
