RLH Call for responses: Is Bloodlines Fun?

Hey folks

On the cusp of the Clan Quest Mod hub, we ask you: Is Bloodlines Fun?

You've heard us, now we want to hear from you. When you do the calculus of "Bloodlines Masterpiece..." and "Bloodlines... fighty..." where do you land?

You have until next monday!

I read, and reread my Vampire: the Masquerade 2nd edition revised rulebook over and over and never played. I played many sessions in two different Vampire LARPs. I'm a big fan of the old World of Darkness (oWoD)! I just couldn't do Bloodlines. I tapped out after a few hours because I could not find any joy in the play experience. I found the play experience to be really lackluster. I found the spaces to be unpleasantly spartan. The world felt empty and artificial. Moving around was slow and tedious. What I saw of the story didn't set any hooks in me and was spaced between these large gaps of directionless boredom. The only engaging bit I played was the haunted house. That was a cool walking sim! Didn't feel very related to being a vampire. Overall, if the narrative was the best part of this I would have rather had a visual novel. Make all that boring navigation into a menu. Bloodlines was a total miss for me and this season of RLH was done as a service.

What makes Bloodlines fun to me is it lets you fulfill a fantasy of what kind of Vampire you want to be. That fantasy extends through dialogue, combat and what kinds of quests you do and is different for each of the clans. Playing as a Ventrue where I Persuade or Dominate in conversation to get my way, soak up all sorts of damage with Fortitude and use Dominate to charm or stun enemies in combat makes for a different kind of fantasy than previous playthroughs as a Tremere where I'd explode people at range or a super agile and charming Toreador who dodges attacks and gets extra shots in. Being that kind of character is fun to me and I think the mechanics allow you to embody it. The fundamental situation the Fledgeling finds themself in is also fun. Navigating a political web with movers and shakers more powerful than you with unclear motivations who can deceive or lie, who have been at this much longer than you have, feels cooler to me and is more enjoyable to play in than being The Chosen One everyone bows to and engages with very directly.
