Real Lich Hours Check in Episode!

Hello everyone

Like with the previous season, we'll be stopping a few times to do a round up of your comments and feedback, as well as cover anything we've missed. With the clan quest mod, after Downtown seems like roughly 1/3 the way through the game, so we're going to be recording one of these soon. Get in your comments in the replies!

Also note: I'm no expert on Vampire, so I know I've gotten some stuff wrong. This is your opportunity to set the record straight (I know I called Beckett a Brujah and I'm sorry and I'm praying on it and I'm taking some time with my wife and family and I thank you for respecting my privacy in this trying time).

Bloodlines was my introduction to World Of Darkness and from there to TTRPGs in general. To call it formative is to undersell how, even now, aspects of the game, the setting, and the tabletop all creep into my own RPG design. It was also startling, at the time, to play a videogame RPG that took place in the modern day, that was first person but more graphically impressive than Morrowind, and that felt like it offered more--albeit imperfect--space for social and intellectual characters than a lot of similar games I'd played by then (while the limits remain in various ways, I think I played Torment a year later and I'm blanking on other games of the era that had combat but did not emphasize it). I'll think of more to say by the next check-in, since that should also give me an excuse to talk about my favourite VTM character I've played; Tzimisce Autarkis Bela Ilselescu Dragosani, Childe of [an insufferable recitation of lineage follows but he's entirely too flanked by vohzd to be interrupted).

I was a Ventrue for the playthrough I did for the show and really enjoyed it. Controlling minds with Dominate fits into the fantasy perfectly and the Sleep power lets you finish off unconscious enemies in a single hit or sneak by with ease, which is really empowering. The Clan weakness also changed how I approached things, having to rely on blood packs and make more runs to nightclubs because I couldn’t drink from rats or many people in the streets. A point I will return to with a more negative tone when we reach the Hollywood sewers, I assure you. However, much as I love the game and think the Clan Quest Mod improves things a great deal, something I think is a mild bummer is how tied Clan is to Sect in Bloodlines. And to an extent, in Vampire: The Masquerade more broadly. I played an Anarch Ventrue and I’m fine with being treated with suspicion because of that. But the clan quest I got would be to kill Skelter, with no deviation allowed for people friendly to the Anarchs other than not doing it. Likewise, having all four Anarchs at The Last Round be Brujah feels like a missed opportunity to portray other perspectives. Kindred are people and different ones place different levels of importance on Coterie, Clan and Sect. Certain clans are more likely to be in certain sects, sure, but it’s hardly a guarantee. And I think having an Anarch Ventrue or Camarilla Brujah NPC would have given both the clans and sects more depth.
