Reacting to 'Doris' by Earl Sweatshirt

Direct Play Link: https://iframe.mediadelivery.net/play/27377/38e9f6d9-facf-4791-a7fe-b1f34a484447

Y'all get this a day early cause I'm going to be away from my PC this weekend. I even took a vacation day to get this done on Thursday... which is a good sign? A teeny-tiny babystep toward YouTube full time?

Enjoy!

Comments

This camera is a throwback now

Ethan Easter

Earl sweatshirt, definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but I totally get that. Once you react to more earl you’ll notice how drastically different Tyler’s newer music sounds compared to earl’s newer stuff. Almost as if they went in opposite directions musically.. Thanks for this reaction. One of my favs from you!

Ace B

If you enjoy trippy sounding beats, you are gonna love ASAP Rocky, whenever he comes around lol

Genesis Osuna

Yeah, that's kinda crazy... and a lot to deal with at a young age

Bob_the_Poppop

lol I bet

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, I'd like to hear some of those guys as well. They're all on the list, just gotta get to them

Bob_the_Poppop

Someday... someday

Bob_the_Poppop

No worries, man, post away

Bob_the_Poppop

I watched it... lol, and laughed for most of it 😊

Bob_the_Poppop

Had no idea until after

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, that's incredible. I wasn't doing anything worthwhile at that age lol

Bob_the_Poppop

Looking forward to hearing more

Bob_the_Poppop

It only lets me like the post once :(

Bob_the_Poppop

lol that shit is amazing

Bob_the_Poppop

Oh that's very cool! I like that idea a lot

Bob_the_Poppop

haha

Bob_the_Poppop

Looking forward to it for sure

Bob_the_Poppop

That "Woah" voice is actually a sample from Toy Story 1. It's those 3 little green aliens saying Woah 😂

Isaac Abraham

Okay last comment I swear lol. Check out the Punk Rock MBA. He made a video titled “How Tyler, the Creator + Odd Future Saved The Rock Scene”.

Jay Dog

A couple things: 1. Earl as well as Odd Future were known atheist, that got their kicks using Satanic imagery and lyrics to piss off Old black people. He would Never make a song about searching for God.That explains the cover too. Sunday is about his GF that he had at the time. 2. He’s not bipolar. “Too black for the white kids and too white for the blacks” is talking about how he couldn’t hang around with black kids because they considered him “white washed” because he liked other music like Jazz, Rock and “Mysterious” Hip Hop. Plus he skated. He was too black for white kids rather they didn’t get him because a lot of what he talked about, what he watched, and listened too like trap, Neo Soul, etc. was very blackcentric. Tyler, the Creator also stated High School was the same for him. They didn’t belong to anything hence the name Odd Future, because the future was going to belong to the weirdo misfit black kids. Thank you and plz listen to “Chum(Left Brain Remix)”

Jay Dog

I think I big part of liking Earl, especially his early work, is the art of rhyming. Even if he’s not rapping about something specific or telling a story, his flow and rhyme patterns are so crazy

Frosty

i dont like shit and srs are some of my favorite rap albums of all time!!!!

Ugo Nwigwe

Omg you should react to Odd Future tape vol. 2 album, you’ll love the beats since you’re a rocker lol, it’s great!!

China

I have to disagree, if you don't like Doris that's fine, and I can see a few comparisons between Doris and IDLSIDGO, but the albums are pretty different both sonically and with what mood they set out to create, and yes Earl was more childish on this album (I mean, what 18-19 year old isn't childish to an extent) but I don't think his age takes away from the quality of Doris in the slightest, and even aids the album at times. I love all eras of Earl, but to say Doris is 'overrated' is crazy, especially when most (current) Earl fans wouldn't even rank it as his best album post-SRS, If you made this exact point but were talking about his debut mixtape Earl I'd actually agree, but I just don't see where you're coming from with this Doris criticism with all due respect. All this being said, I think we can both agree that it will be fun to see Bob go through the journey of Earl's career and how his sound and subject matter has evolved over time.

Lil Mac

For me, it’s the production that makes this album sing. I’ve never been big on earl himself.

CRASH

Honestly Doris is very overrated, it's highly recommended because there is a huge chunk of OF fans that didn't like Earl's artistic direction and are nostalgic for the Tyler / OF sound, Doris is still pretty childish compared to his later work, I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside is just the best parts about Doris amplified without the childish parts and Some Rap Songs is just a different sound and style all together, He also has the Solace EP which you should check out right after I Don't Like Shit since their similar and combined they just amount to around 40 minutes of music.

Christopher Bloom

His grandma died after Doris too. He speaks about it on the next album.

AlxNetc

Also this album is a very transitional time in Earls life. He was 18/19, come out of school famous for the shit he did at 16 and shoved into the limelight which he never really adjusted well to. Whilst Tyler was for sure the creative figurehead, Earl was considered the better rapper. As odd future blew up, his mum sent him away and Tyler and his crew did a whole “free earl” campaign where fans would scream obscenities about Earls mum. And as Earl came back and matured he’s kind of grown to resent how that moment went. There isn’t a lot of public knowledge as to why OF split but safe to say for Earl that was part of why he grew apart. Might be worth doing a little deep dive on what was happening odd future if you’re interested.

AlxNetc

Goes without saying MF DOOM was a huge influence on Earl and Tyler’s rapping style coming up. So was Eminem and Odd Future was compared to Wu Tang because it was like a bunch of young guys just rapping to impress each other, shock and make each other laugh. Whilst also saying a bunch of wild shit. Doris was still in that style but things start to change by the next album.

AlxNetc

His flow is influenced by DOOM's rhyming techniques. You can check the highlighted rhymes video for Whoa to see what I am talking about - https://youtu.be/NF9aLPwJhZs

Rishav Roy

Great take

Isaiah Piedra

I feel like Some Rap Songs has enough dense content to react separately

Isaiah Piedra

SRS is amazing, so underrated

Isaiah Piedra

Man wait until you get to his recent album, Some Rap Songs. It’s his deepest, most personal album. It followed a long hiatus where he became super profound after his dad died. And it sounds like a Pablo Picasso painting. I really really wanna know your thoughts on that album. It’s one of my favorites ALL time.

Isaiah Piedra

Mac and Earl were really good friends, I love the music they made together. I wish you were doing faces first, but I'm still looking forward to circles

Henry

Man those who weren’t around at that time, will never understand the hype behind this album. Who else had a “Free EARL” shirt/hoodie? hahaha

Jay Dog

this album is so fucking good when you're high

yeah

SRS and Aethiopes would be the biggest W (Aethiopes is in my top2 of the yr w/ Crest)

Cullen Hendricks

Chum is such an important song to a lot of people, myself included. Being a mixed fatherless teenager when I first heard this song made it hit WAY harder too. The line "Too black for the white kids too white for the blacks" has stuck with my my whole life, because it was so true for me. You NEED to listen to Some Rap Songs. Literally one of my favorite rap albums ever, such a unique sound. Like nothing you've listened to before, not even Doris. It's not a long album at all. Only 24 minutes. I would recommend that you do it this weekend but you said you'd be away. Should definitely do a double feature with this and maybe like a Billy Woods project or something. Billy Woods just dropped Aethiopes which is in like my top 3 albums of the year so far and it's only 29 minutes, and they're in the same vain. Would LOVE to hear your thoughts on both albums. Super lyrical focused, crazy unique instrumentals, pretty dark, VERY unique. Defiantly gotta get around to both of those eventually.

CRASH

GREAT reaction. Chum is an essential hip-hop track. Also love seeing you geek out hearing Mac. I know you've seen 'Delusional Thomas' and 'Watching Movies w/ the Sound Off' requested -- they released the same year as Doris. This sound was a huge departure from the party rap that got Mac famous. When we talk about his growth as an artist... it's real. Cannot wait for you to hear Circles.

Psykopomp

I think a great word to describe Earl’s writing is “esoteric.” This might be shocking to you but this is probably earls most straightforward writing throughout his career lol. He only gets more vague & more troubled from here. Beautiful writer though. Definitely always evokes some feeling out of me. I feel like he does a great job of choosing words that evoke images & feelings in the listener, even if it’s never clear why

Teddy Andrew

DOOM is Earls favourite artist and his biggest influence! Here’s a video of him & Tyler meeting DOOM for the first time, legendary clip. https://youtu.be/4kSBTAT9lI4

Tribecalledjoe

hell yeah nice reaction. Hope you get the chance to check out Vince Staples, J.I.D, Joey Bada$$ and XXXtentacion. love your videos

Tonibologna I want to stick my stromboli in chrissys cazlonii

One of your best reactions. I think Earl is the best rhymer of all time just in terms of putting words and sentences together.

Braden

I'm glad this album hooked you enough to listen to more Earl, even though the album itself wasn't a total hit. No spoilers from me, but I'll say your opinion on this album's creation (sounding like he's wrestling between old and new) pretty much matches Earl's account. This album is transitional. Early Earl was fond of agile rhyming, which let him say a bunch of impressive but often incoherent stuff. Recent Earl is... Well, look at those short runtimes, eh? Also, this RandomBlackDude is on the rise! LOL.

Dareka

Full time YouTuber 🔥🔥

Zach Gupta

His next two albums are both pretty short, IDLSIDGO is 30 min and Some Rap Songs is 25. Maybe a double reaction?

VeganMilk

Earl was 18 or 19 when this dropped. Like you suspect, he matures a lot on the next two albums. Lyrically, he's more dense and more concise, and his production becomes more stripped down, bleak, and abstract--downright hypnotic if listened to on repeat. I am confident you will find I Don't Like Shit to be one of your favorite listens.

adiiiiiiiii

I don’t know if people consider this album as part of the “Abstract” Hip Hop sub genre but his more recent work definitely is and he also features on and has featured on his stuff a lot of Abstract artists like Navy Blue,Armand Hammer(Billy Woods & ELUCID)& Zeloopers.

Cullen Hendricks

Great reaction... sorry for posting so many comments. Glad you reacted to some Earl!

kezeye

You should react to the Whoa video, or at least watch it on your own time. You said it feels like they're just fucking around, the video will definitely go with that haha

kezeye

Earl def belongs in that El-P, DOOM, Aesop Rock camp of writing, where they are almost intentionally vague and esoteric to the point of driving away people that just arent going to get it (thats the way i take it at least). it reminds me of that tyler line "cause its not made for them, the n***a thats in the mirror rapping its made for him"

Jake Curran

RandomBlackDude is Earl's producer alias by the way

kezeye

Earl is also definitely still using the kind of lyrical DOOM flow on this album with all the ornate and wordy verses but he begins to write shorter and more poignant things in future albums although his style seems to be more esoteric à la the Billy Woods influence nowadays.

Derek Lopez

He was only 18 or 19 when this came out, legendary I think

kezeye

I never thought about Sunday that way, interesting

kezeye

Earl is a special artist who has definitely influenced a lot of rappers (Lucki, MIKE, Navy Blue, etc) with his personal and introspective writing. Doris was a more commercial debut - although still in Earl’s off kilter style - whereas with his next projects they’re way more reflective of Earl’s true style. Especially when you make it to Some Rap Songs. Would love to see you react to me more of him!

Derek Lopez

Earl is awesome, please keep reacting to his albums

kezeye

IDLSIDGO is my fave of his projects. DOOM is a huge influence on Earl too. - your visual description of the intro track almost kind of sounds like the actual music video for Hive off this album haha - yup, The Neptunes are Pharrell + Chad Hugo. One of the most iconic production duos ever, you've definitely heard songs that they've produced before without realizing it. N*E*R*D - In Search Of... is also an essential album by them (it's kind of genre-less tbh, but has influence from their hip hop backgrounds + rock and many other genres). -RandomBlackDude is Earl's producer alias, so he produced those songs

snooza

agreed, Doris is cool but IDLSIDGO is my fave work of his

snooza

Promise IDLSIDGO is way better and SRS will be a good step into abstract hip hip

sam

Earl-y post. Nice
