Witherer

yes. faces is a MUST

ok

just scrolled through all the comments and it wasnt mentioned once. everybody wants faces

Cozy Terry

also want to mention how u kept thinking about drug use and how his life came to an end. Coming from someone who experienced the album before and after it feels so much different with the context. it feels veryyyyyy prophetic. i love mac and this was my favorite album (and still is) but is one of the hardest albums to listen to now. and then plus his tiny desk (im bout to watch your reaction after one more song)

Cozy Terry

hi bob! great video soooooo glad you not only liked but were trying to dive so deep into everything! first things first: LISTEN TO LARRY LOVESTEIN "YOU!!!!!" If you liked the jazz elements youll love it. Its a love album under an alias, but absolutely beautiful.

Cozy Terry

It's sad learning about Mac and his death. More so when fans talk about how much he meant to them. But then I read your bit about staying in and I smile :)

Bob_the_Poppop

Circles is gonna come along soon.

Bob_the_Poppop

Great video bob, hope to see more mac in the future, but I know how saturated your list is already. Circles is very important as a sequel to this album but Faces is one of my favorite albums all time so I hope you get a chance to listen to that sometime. Hope all is well!

David Lima

Wonderful reaction Bob. It's weird but the passing of someone I don't know has never impacted me as much as Mac Miller. Being around the same age, following since Kids and relating to so much of what he talks about made it feel a bit close to home. His growth as an artist was unbelievable; imagine what he could be creating if he made it through & was still creating in his 40s lets say. Some context; he had gone through a bad breakup with Ariana, she had said some disparaging things publicly, he had crashed his car drunk and high. People were worried for him. This dropped and it was like oh shit, as good as this is, he's not in a good place. When he was promoting the album though, his interviews were lucid and he seemed in control and happy. The NPR tiny desk performance is fantastic. So it was like oh ok he looks like he's actually doing good. Then he passed. Heartbreaking. Also, side note to this long ass comment. Some of the boys going out this weekend like 'Yo Paulie, you coming out?'... "Nah bro, the man I pay $2 a month is listening to Swimming on Friday, I'm staying in, He gets this shit" Keep doing what you're doing Bob, One love. P.S. Do The Infamous Mobb Deep

Paulie Walnuts

Has anyone recommended Juice Wrld yet? Bc if not then I do.

Lex

I went and relistened to faces after watching this and knew there were similarities but never realized how much

ER JR

React to circles! its amazing

Kristian Kjellevold

Hey Bob. So Jon Brion who played a huge part in the production on both Swimming and Circles actually played a huge role in Fiona Apple's works like When the Pawn and Extraordinary Machine. And the first of those Fiona albums is what inspired Kanye to use Jon Brion for Late Registration.

Demarco

we really need Circles asap next, it creates on full album called swimming in circles. I think all the community would understand if you do Circles next in honor of mac. Rip Mac I know you looking down on all of us <3

Tyson Jankowiak

I love Alan Watts. So calming for me

Bob_the_Poppop

My biggest hesitation with starting at the beginning was how long it would ultimately take to get through all of his albums since I like to keep a variety of artists in rotation

Bob_the_Poppop

Ah that makes sense

Bob_the_Poppop

Hopefully doing the Tiny Desk on Sunday (that's the goal)

Bob_the_Poppop

Yup, love it

Bob_the_Poppop

Thanks for the support :)

Bob_the_Poppop

Makes perfect sense lol

Bob_the_Poppop

Yeah, it's tough doing that though. I'm doing that with Earl (since a lot of people asked me to) and now all I'm getting are requests to skip Doris lol...

Bob_the_Poppop

Me too :)

Bob_the_Poppop

Great video, amazing how you nailed that final "ascending" sound at the end of the album. According to the Producer Jon Brion, that was intentional- planned out between him and Mac! "Swimming" was supposed to be part 1 of a trilogy of albums- "Swimming"/"Circles"/"????" But unfortunately Mac passed soon after the release of Swimming. There's a fantastic interview with the Final Producer/ Collaborator (the legendary) Jon Brion with Zane Lowe that I would link you, but it goes a bit deeper in to "Circles" and has some songs previewed in it so I won't spoil that. But you should Definitely do "Circles" next to pick up where you left off here. "Faces" and "Divine Feminine" are incredible albums but you can honestly jump in to those any time without disrupting the flow of "Swimming" n "Circles". Mac was a great musician Bob, and I would not be surprised if he found Pink Floyd and others you mentioned super inspirational in crafting his sound.

https://academyofideas.com/2016/03/alan-watts-anxiety-enlightenment-and-the-wisdom-of-insecurity/ <-- Good stuff Bob - listened to the fear of enlightenment video and read this. It's like Watts is speaking directly to my existential dread lol

Rhonnie Bravo

all imma say bob is if you thought 2009 was hard to get through bring a box of tissues for Circles lmao. i def think that should be the next project, Circles and Swimming i believe were recorded at the same time, so theres a lot of parallels

Jake Curran

So happy to see this one. Loved it. You must do Faces at some point. It came out in 2014 as a mixtape but is listed as a 2021 release on streaming services because that's when all the samples were cleared and it could finally go on Spotify/Tidal/Apple Music.

Ryan

Please do Faces. Honestly should have done Faces before this one but oh well, once you do faces it’ll click Better

Aaron Reyes

gotta listen to faces and watching movies

Litty Again

it sucks that you started with swimming. i love this album but without context its hard understand a lot of it. his lyrics are more generalized here than any other project. nonetheless im happy you've finally arrived to my favorite artist. there are a million things i want to add in one comment, but one side note on the final track; his final post on instagram was a livestream the night he died. theres a part where he's listening to the instrumental outro on so it goes and he says it makes him feel like he's ascending to heaven. its hard to get out of the mindset of relating everything he says to drugs and its fair enough, but theres a lot more behind his lyrics. in his search for love and faith and his place in the universe, drugs were a double edged sword that lead to his undoing ultimately. his music has gotten me through so many different timepoints in my life. i look forward to your future content on his works and i hope you watch some interviews to understand him better. thanks for the reaction Bob

Henry

Bob I could be completely wrong but with the "I was out of town" line on Jet Fuel, I've always interpreted it as when you're out of town you can also call it a trip, which would connect the underlying message of getting high.

Matt

If you watch the npr tiny desk could you record it? I would love to see your reaction to that!

Jelle de Jong

"My eyes on the enterprise. Nine lives, never die. Fuck a heaven, I'm still gettin' high. Nevermind." So much said in so few words. RIP Mac. Thank you for doing this. Undoubtedly one of my favorite reactions so far. Can't wait for you to hear more 😊

Psykopomp

Bob, beyond watching the NPR Tiny Desk with him (which is awesome, one of my favorites and up there with Anderson .Paak's which is high praise) I would urge urge urge you to watch the Memorial performances of What's The Use (performed by Thundercat since he played bass on the original) and especially Small Worlds performed by John Mayer (who in case you didn't get to see it was the one playing that dope ass guitar on the original). It's heartbreaking to see them have to perform for him since he's gone but also gives you some extra appreciation for how well written the songs are. I will also throw my hat into the ring for Circles next instead of Faces. I said this elsewhere but I feel like Circles completes Swimming, it's the other half of the journey that he never got to take and I think it's a beautiful album. I also barely listen to it because somehow despite it being a more hopeful album than Swimming it just makes me so much more sad than Swimming - it's like I'm getting a glimpse into what could have been and it just makes me feel so awful for everyone around him that loved him, and for all of us that got to enjoy his music. He was evolving and growing into something really special and started to lift his head out of the water but then...he drowned. So it goes.

Xavvi

100% agree. He already started with Swimming and I think Swimming is incomplete without Circles so to interrupt that seems wrong. He can go back to Faces etc later.

Xavvi

Bob, I must politely insist that when you revisit Mac in the future, you listen to Circles. Swimming and Circles are an unofficial combo of sorts, which is why people call it “Swimming in Circles”. Circles is a phenomenal album and feels like Mac is talking from heaven. At least to me, anyway. Loved this reaction!

Dennis

Technically you have heard him before, he had a verse on Freddie Gibbs’ Piñata (the title track)

VeganMilk

I see others mentioning Faces and Circles which are both phenomenal, especially after Swimming but a personal favorite of mine is The Divine Feminine. The album is basically a love letter to Ariana and and has a totally different vibe from Swimming and Circles and I think it'll be interesting seeing how he transitions from those two albums.

Christian Thomas

Btw do Circles next instead of Faces. Swimming in Circles

CRASH

Don’t watch the NPR video on YouTube. They like to block and give strikes. If I remember correctly I think Jon Denton got a channel strike for that video. But please do watch it here with your wife. Love your dynamic together and I think she will appreciate it. Lastly, watch the Ty dolla sign tiny desk that was done in memory of Mac. It’s so heartbreaking. It’s a follow up to Mac’s tiny desk.

CRASH

When you watch the NPR Tiny Desk Concert please record it and post here! If you don't mind

kezeye

For everybody saying "Do Faces Next" I think it would be better to do Circles to complete the Swimming in Circles narrative that Mac wanted. After Circles Faces or KIDS would be amazing to see!

Andrew Morton

I knew of Mac Milller had a few songs in my playlist but was never a fan you could say, then this album came out and made me truly love his music. Then he tragically passed away and this album became something special to me. 2009 is up there as an all time favorite track personally.

Whyyeezus

For the love of God Bob, please watch the tiny desk concert! It's an absolute must, for your own sake! https://youtu.be/QrR_gm6RqCo

jofo48

plz do faces next bob, its a mixtape but very good. its really dark and more specific lyrically so i think you would enjoy it. thank you for this, it was great

Mason

If u enjoyed the sound of this album ul really enjoy circles. Faces will be interesting for u to hear because it's a great album but Mac is a different artist from these 2 albums........recommended videos to check out are the Mac Miller Tiny Desk for this album it's a top 5 tiny desk. Another 1 I really like is the John Mayer Mac tribute(he did the guitar on small worlds)

John

please do Faces next!

Matt

The Thundercat bass on Whats the Use ALWAYS hits. ALWAYS.

Antonio

Whenever you do Faces make sure you do the original not the one on streaming services. Certain samples aren't on the new version

Brendan B

I’ve been contemplating joining for months now and I finally decided I couldn’t wait anymore. Glad to be here Bob!

Ian Lewis

“Off the juice” basically means on the juice. It’s slang.

Isaiah Piedra

One of the best albums of all times imo. I recommend going back and starting from kids, go through his musical evolution. His release of macadelic was the album that changed people perception of himself as a frat rapper too one of the most creative and deep rappers ever

sam

In interviews, Mac was actually getting sober during this album. But he relapsed sometime after releasing. It makes it more sad, the fact that he was “swimming” to the surface and ended up succumbing to the bottom anyways.

Isaiah Piedra

Swimming wins polls bc it’s very recent and popular with the newer generation of listeners. Casual fans probably don’t dig into the past work like Faces. You missed a pretty cool opportunity to experience the arc like the day 1 fans experienced. Mac is like Kanye and Tyler where you gotta start from album 1. He’s very personal and you see his mindsets change as he ages. Nonetheless, glad you’re doing him ! My 2nd favorite artist all time

Isaiah Piedra

Yes Mac Miller finally

Mr. Bigweld

I really wish you would’ve started at the beginning of his albums, because his growth as an artist is unlike anything I’ve seen from any other rapper.

McSwagburgerXL

so happy you are listening to mac!

Jackson Holden
