As far as Rap Duo's go, it's hard to pick a favorite between these RTJ and Outkast. There's just so much raw energy coming from Mike and El. Yeah, a lot of their songs are just shit-talking and one liners, but the entirety of RTJ4 is full of so many protest jams its like a soundtrack for a revolution!

As has been mentioned, Killer Mike is an OutKast find and he has some great verses on some of the later stuff in their catalog, which I think you’ll really enjoy. One thing that really stood out to me was your comment about your boxes being checked and think of something as good brought this analogy to mind. Rap is kind of like BMX or skateboarding. Some people have super technical street skills, others are better in half pipe, some will do the big vert jumps. To me, RTJ is mostly the street skills. All of the technical stuff is where they excel. Their rhyme patterns and the way they stack their bars and one liners is like a skateboarder chaining together manuals, grinds, and board flips on a street course.

I’ve got some awesome news for you - RTJ3 is significantly more political and narrative based than the first two and RTJ4 continues that politics angle while being hands-down their best album yet. I look forward to those two reactions! 👍🏼

Cracked a couple brews open enjoying this first reaction, and now let's gooo (and the lyrics always stay dense but I feel like RTJ only get better/funnier/more serious going forward from the first one)

2022-05-27 23:20:52 +0000 UTCWhat I loved about RTJ right from the start is not only are they two individually beastmode rappers, who by themselves can hold rank amongst the best, and not only is El-P a phenomenal producer, but that together they are stronger. They straight-up Tag-Team beat-down these beats. The way they are just weaving in and out of each other's verses, doubling up for emphasis, finishing each-other's sentences... not many other rappers in the game do that. Plus just the way they can combine their two perspectives and show different views of a situation, using really baroque and brutal wordplay in a fun way to paint the truth.

2022-05-27 23:12:14 +0000 UTCI think there's more in here than you get on the first listen, despite you being right about it being a lot of one-liners. They tend to throw messages and meaning into a lot of their tracks that on the surface level seems like "just" one liners, and sprinkle in more serious tracks in-between the silliness. Mike's super direct style is such an opposite of El-P who can be really abstract as well, and I think they're easier to "get" once your more familiar with that dynamic and their different styles. Also don't think you read too much into DDFH at all. If anything, I'd say you read too little in the track following it. Anyways, loved the reaction and really looking forward to your additional thoughts as well. On to RTJ2!

2022-05-27 22:28:06 +0000 UTCKiller Mike is Big Boi's protege, you'll see Killer Mike start to pop up on later OutKast albums This was such a crazy collab at the time because both Killer Mike and El-P had been making moves for the previous decade or so (Killer Mike with Outkast/Dungeon Family, El-P being a part of the legendary Rawkus and Def Jux labels). It was such a random collabo, I remember being like "that Killer Mike and that El-P have an album together, let alone know each other??". Crazy that they've gone on this huge run so late in their careers and are now bigger than they ever were.

2022-05-27 22:21:10 +0000 UTCI was about to throw out the suggestion of “king of hearts” by Camu Tao It’s a posthumous album that was finished by el-p A lot of the vocals were recorded while Camu was in hospital care for lung cancer (primarily recording in the bathrooms) Camu was very close to a lot of underground artists of his era It’s not hip hop but it’s a gorgeous album There’s a lot of open space and some repetition, which to me really emphasizes the loss of Camu El-p did a beautiful job tying the album together
