He was indeed on piñata on high

Ethan Easter

am i the only one who realized he was looking for "accustomed"

lil quacc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDluEia22oA Adderal Admiral opens with a bunch of this track from the 1979 album from This Heat. The album is not an easy listen, but there's absolute sonic gold in there.

Sam Van Dellen

He clearly views drugs as a bad thing in XXX, just trys to mask it in the first half of the album before sobering up in the second half

joseph

^

Shane

yup, we need a react to the new Heart 5 video, you will be mindblown lol

jimmyvinyl

Hopefully a reaction to all The Heart series including the new one (They all add up to a bit under half an hour)

Christopher Bloom

EMERGENCY!!! KENDRICK JUST DROPPED THE HEART PART 5 WE NEED AN EMERGENCY REACTION

Isaac Abraham

The album you keep describing is atrocity exhibition, I guess it took him a couple of years to view drugs as a bad thing

J Dot

I mentioned this in the YT comments but there's a few singles and features Danny did around the same time as XXX which might warrant checking out. Especially check out Growing Up as it wasnt on any album and is probably his biggest song. Short, sweet, yet iconic. Also a good track with Brown on it from the XXX period being "The Last Huzzah!" Which has a bunch of great artists on it who at the time weren't super mainstream. Danny Brown's verse is masterful and yet isn't even the best one on the cut.

Scott Watrous

Another great reaction Bob! I hope you react to Old before you do AE. It is in my opinion a better album than this one.

Erik H

Danny Brown and JPEG just announced a collaboration album coming this year

NiFr

I never really gelled with Danny Brown for some reason but I really enjoyed this and will listen to more now. Thank you Bob Also, you referenced Hemingway which means you have to listen to Mobb Deep next. Fuck Kendrick

Paulie Walnuts

Also, was the word Dependent/dependency??

Hollywood Hulk Logan

Man I’m positive Atrocity Exhibition will melt your mind.

Hollywood Hulk Logan

You should try noticing how Danny's using his voice in different parts of this album. It's really a Side A and Side B type of album, and as soon as DNA (start of side B) starts, the high-pitched voice goes away for the rest of the album (except on the last track). It's really intentional and creates such a stark contrast between party tracks, frantic and manic tracks and the more reflective, somber, defeated and darker type of tracks.

Bakke

My favorite rap album from the 2010s is easily Atrocity Exhibition but surprisingly I come back to XXX more often. Similar to TPAB, I find AE as an album experience that you really need to strap in for. Something that I find very interesting is that in an interview back in 2013, Danny listed off Closer by Joy Division as his 5th favorite album of all time. Not only does AE share the same name as the opening track off of Closer, but I think the way Danny details his addiction is very similar to the way Ian Curtis did on his feelings of depression and isolation with Joy Division before his death. The production is also just purely insane and I truly don't think anyone else could've come close to blending so well with it than Danny does

Alex Bernhardt

The word you were looking for is tolerance I think

Lil Slatt

Fantastic album but the reaction was 100% worth it just for the reaction to I Will. That shit had my dying

Mike Muzzi

I have a suggestion. I remember when you listened to MOTM you listened to MOTM2 for your additional thoughts. One idea that probably won't disappoint as many people is to listen to Danny's Old in your own time and add it to your additional thoughts. Though not as popular as his other albums, he actually is a lot more introspective on Old than XXX which I think you'll appreciate. The production is also more full on Old. Actually I would say that its a pretty underrated album. I won't say too much about it but it does have an interesting structure. I think it might also help flesh out your additional thoughts video which I also look forward to.

Mohammad Moeladawilah

Danny Brown uses many different voices, including the deep one you were confused about. He had a lot of projects before this one using a deeper voice. The high pitched voice made him standout, so he stuck with it. Also, the proverbial 'you' in hiphop is often not directed at anyone specifically. Hiphop was always considered a competitive sport, and especially in the era Danny came up in, you were constantly writing battle raps to prove your greatness. This dates back to the early 80s. I also think you're reading too much into the music. Danny loves rappers like Ol' Dirty Bastard, who make music predominately about having fun, partying and just being outrageous. There are countless hiphop albums that fall in that category, and don't require deep analysis.

Jae

OLD comes after XXX, you gotta listen to to have a full landscape of what's going on , AE dropped late 2016 of im guessing right maybe 2017

Alex Aldea

Highly recommend the A$AP Rocky interview it‘s hilarious

Maximilian Müller

Listened to this all through high school Broke the monotony

Lance Boldman

Appreciate the shoutout Bob 🙌🏼 great video. Also the word you were looking for was “tolerance” lol

Teddy Andrew

Ha!

Bob_the_Poppop

Also his album between XXX and AE, Old, is also good, don't know if it justifies a reaction, but definitely worth a listen, either before or even after AE, it honestly has some of his most introspective songs along with his most upbeat ones

Christopher Bloom

Can't wait for the AE reaction, I personally enjoy XXX way more but in terms of focusing on drug addiction as a theme AE is probably the greatest representation of that in Hip Hop

Christopher Bloom

What i love about dannys albums is that it always sound fun and zany and you go well that sound like a great time and about 3 tracks later u wish that u never do drugs in your life. A lot of people cant get past his high pitched voice and fast delivery but if you get into danny brown youre going to experience some amazing music.

Boyan Konov

The title is sort of triple reference to the album's triple themes. XXX = 1. Age (XXX is obviously 30 in roman numerals, when this mixtape/album dropped Danny was still very underground even though he was rapping for a while already, and in hip hop you're expected to peak in your 20's, so the existential fear he will never get big now that he's already 30 is the main theme) 2. Sex (triple X a known use for explicit sexual content, which this album is packed with, and it's something Danny uses other than drugs in order to cope with his struggles) & 3. Drugs (the cover with the 3 X's on the pill, sort of reminiscent of a Xanax bar, his drug addiction is the always looming threat behind him as he tries to develop a career before OD'ing, but ironically it just feeds more off of his stress of never being successful, and is also reinforced by his sex addiction)

Christopher Bloom

During "I Will", when you said "One of the things I'm good at...", I was fully prepared for you to follow it up with "...is eating pussy" 🤣

Athanasios Sarafis

now that you've heard his music you should check out his show 'Danny's House' on youtube

Psykopomp

has anyone recommended N*E*R*D - In Search Of...? Pharrell is in the group along with Chad Hugo (also part of the Neptunes) and Shae. The reason why i'm mentioning it here is because they were sampled on XXX on "Party All of the Time". they are a really cool genre blending group, can't really place them in a single bucket. they of course have a hip hop origin but they have the rock influence too, a long with soo many other genres. worth a listen one day. a lot of interesting subject matter too, kinda similar to this album but made 10 years earlier.

snooza

The dream is 2 albums a week. How much would that take 😭

CRASH

Quelle Chris who produced Monopoly is a very underrated artist too! His albums 'Guns' and 'innocent country 2' are highly recommended

daredevil777

yes that is still to this day one of my favorite albums. good call to start with this one. Also danny has a lot of great interviews and media out there. I highly recommend his 'Hot Ones' interview to maybe get to know him better its funny af and probably a nice watch while being drunk. peace great reaction EDIT: it's actually an interview from the atrocity exhibition era, but they dont get too deep into the album talk so I dont think it will spoil anything

ME TO RAP IS LIKE WATER TO RAVES

adiiiiiiiii

had this album on repeat when i first heard it. i think starting with XXX is a good choice. Danny Brown doesn't always rap in the high pitched voice, there are songs like Blunt after Blunt where he goes between them. Also songs where he just straight up does the whole thing in a lower tone. imo, an essential video to view about Danny Brown is the short clip of him buying toys & treats for his cat while he was on tour because he missed them. i love little stuff like this that further shows the personality of an artists haha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP92OTnRUjg

Bob this is one of my favorite albums of all time. I heard this when I was 14 in high school and it absolutely melted my brain. It was the first time in rap music I could feel the toll of what somebody’s struggles could have on their psyche and way of interpreting things. The analogies and lines are just mind boggling to hear but also so dense with context and weight.

Rigo Ceballos

Sam Cooke's death wasn't really cut and dry. There's evidence it might have been orchestrated by the mob. The whole story is really fishy. I'm laughing at the fact he mentioned how people can't get into hip hop because of the references people don't get and then uses famous poets that are taught in schools as an example

Brendan B

Hmmm I remember you hearing danny before too but I don’t remember when…. Definitely wasnt Kanye. Edit: it was “High” off of Gibbs/Madlib’s Piñata

CRASH

we finally got ourselves danny brown after MONTHS now hopefully AE next month
