The movie was made up fir the show, but the French title translates to The Banquet of Amelia. So, it was either porn, or at least erotica. The theater is at one end of the only Sunnydale street thayexisted on set. About 50 feet further up is the actual entrance to The Bronze. Across the street (alley) between the two is the coffee shop they sometimes stop at. Inhabitants never noticed until someone pointed it out in another reaction, but did Faith blow her cover when they returned to the demon's place and she turned on the light? Sam specifically noted that when Faith went alone, he flicked on the light and it did nothing. You think nothing else of it. Buffy and Faith go, and Faith, reaches behind her abd turns on the light without looking. They likely only found out the plan from Giles' "friend," but if that was after the lightswitch, Buffy may have noticed and then put two and two together. As the light did little and Faith not looking to use it, that had to be written as a hint. I don't know for sure, but I feel like Eliza's laugh at the end was real after the mini golf line, but especially with that goofy grin on his face.

That's at least a fair discussion, but I get you on the modern lens and things being far less progressive at the time. No worries on the length of the post. Totally fair to bring up. And I agree, there are a number of stories that could've been explored better in one way or another even in a well-written show like this - Maria

Yes, we absolutely still have that in our plans ✌️ - Sam

Only watched this because I love your reactions but I usually skip this episode on rewatches. It’s incredibly cringe and honestly shady to me. I was so surprised when I read that Buffy fans were unsure of what the ‘demon’ was, some even saying it was a mortal shaman. As an Iraqi and Muslim person, I can confidently say that it was a caricature of a djinn spirit, hence the comical blue Aladdin-genie-like appearance, Bedouin scarf, and awfully butchered Arabic. I really thought the first word of the spell being ‘shaytan’ (lol) would have gave it away and that others would have discussed it. Don’t they usually spend a library meeting discussing the demon of the week? But suddenly no explanation, mention, or clarification down to the ominous ‘don’t summon me again.’ Also, to be fair, he wasn’t the demon of the week but he was the only new supernatural character in the episode so the point still stands. I am not particularly sensitive to this sort of thing as a year after my family and I moved to the States as asylum seekers, 9-11 happened. Growing up in a post 9-11 world as a 5 year old Muslim child who barely spoke English & couldn’t understand why even teachers were encouraging bullying was a… memorable experience. Not to mention, my mother was the only one who was somewhat religious when I was growing up as my father grew up secular. I wasnt wearing a hijab but even the mention of me speaking Arabic or saying something with an accent ended in punishment. It was one of the reasons why I worked so hard to perfect my English accent growing up. And it wasn’t a language barrier - I had multiple teachers growing up who turned a blind eye or themselves say Islamophobic things. The usual ‘terrorist country’ this and that like the US didn’t invade my country but I digress - the mention of Arabs and Islamic history were obviously obfuscated for reasons I won’t get into but I’m not gonna lie, I did feel a little vindicated when I saw what some of the show’s producers like Marti Nixon, Gail Berman, and this episode’s director David Grossman, were saying recently about Gaza. Buffy is my favorite show of all time so I have just had to put it out of my mind that the show was made by Zionists including how SMG was posting misinformation and military propaganda for a settler colonial project (should have known when I saw that she’s friends with Selma Blair’s unhinged ass). Anyways, Jinn lore is actually widely studied under occult studies and would have aligned perfectly with Buffy. They did the same with the Sumerian references. It’s a shame they couldn’t put the Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiments aside for one episode. The bias and prejudice also made the S4 Thanksgiving episode painfully ironic… all the talk about settler colonialism and respecting indigenous cultures (not to mention the joke about the Algerian revolution in S7) while most of the producers are liking posts about how the death of Palestinians is ‘justified’, give me a break. And again - I totally understand my own bias and how I am examining the episode through a moderns lens and how the 90’s were not as progressive but I am currently making a video essay on Dune and the representation of SWANA people and Islam in the West has not changed for the better. It’s being sanitized just enough for Western audiences not to draw any parallels. Sorry for this long post, my point wasnt to dive into current affairs but to highlight the clear erasure and how they avoided discussing the background & history of a character who seemed like he had an interesting past with Giles.

Are you going to be reacting to Angel? I sure hope so!
