Are you talking about jousting? (I watched 'Cable Guy' once about 20 years ago and vaguely remember a few little bits of it.) I realized the guy laughing at Michael's boots at the airport is the two main actors' middle brother. I am sure I noticed him when I watched this decades ago, but I had definitely forgotten about his quick cameo. I agree with you about the "lesson learning" of kid films being different and often better during that time period.
