Dialogue in a small izakaya

There are some izakayas that are run by an individual not by a company, they have friendly and at-home atmosphere. Many people, including me, like to go those places because unlike other chain izakayas, in these small private izakayas, you feel at home, and you can more freely talk to the owner or other customers. I often go to this kind of small izakayas when I travel to other regions, because I can get some information about this region by talking to local people, sometimes other customers buy me some local drinks that they recommend. It is more fun to go to this kind of place than just going to a big chain izakaya.

In this dialogue, a young man from Sapporo who came to a different region entered a small izakaya. He talks to 大将 of that izakaya.

In Japanese, you call the man who manages an izakaya or a bar 大将（たいしょう）or マスター. If it was a woman, people usually call her 女将さん（おかみさん） or ママ.

客　：こんにちは。あのー、一人なんですけど、入れますか？¹

大将：大丈夫だよ。空いてる席に座って。

客　：あ、はい。

大将：お兄さん²、何飲む？

客　：じゃあ生ビール一つお願いします。

大将：はい、これビールね。お兄さん、どこから来たの？

客　：札幌です。

大将：札幌！そんな遠いところから？旅行かい？³

客　：いや、仕事です。

大将：そうなんだ！せっかく札幌から来たんだったら、何かサービス⁴してやんないといけないなあ。

客　：え！本当ですか？でも、いいですよ、ちょっと悪いので。

大将：いやいや、遠慮しなくていいから。お兄さん、焼酎は好きかい？

客　：はい、好きですよ。

大将：じゃあ地元⁵のおいしい焼酎一杯サービスしてあげるよ。

客　：本当ですか？ありがとうございます！

大将：そのビール飲んだら出してあげる。それで、注文は決まったかい？

客　：あのー、ここ刺身ありますか？

大将：あるよ。

客　：じゃあ大将おすすめの刺身の盛り合わせ⁶をください。

大将：はいよ。

客　：あと、タコワサビ一つと、きゅうりの一本漬けを一つ、ししゃも焼きを一つ、あとだし巻き卵を一つお願いします。

大将：あ、ごめん、ししゃも焼きもう売り切れちゃったんだよね。

客　：あ、そうなんですか。じゃあ他に何かおすすめの魚料理ってありますか？

大将：うーん、うちのアジのなめろうはすごいおいしいよ。

客　：じゃあ、それで願いします。

大将：はいよ。

…（ビールを飲み終える）…

大将：あ、ビール飲み終わったね、今から焼酎出すけど、飲み方⁷はどうする？

客　：その焼酎は麦ですか？芋ですか？

大将：これは芋だよ。

客　：じゃあすいません、ロックでお願いします。僕芋焼酎飲むときはロックなんですけど、麦焼酎飲む時は水割りが好きなんですよ。

大将：へえ、そうなの。はい、これ焼酎のロック。あと、これがチェイサー。

客　：ありがとうございます。

(焼酎を飲み終える)

大将：お兄さん、次の飲み物どうする？

客　：じゃあまた同じの一つください。

大将：あいよ。お兄さん結構お酒強いね。普段結構飲んでんの？

客　：はい、僕は毎日飲みますね、普段はビールですけど。

……

客　：大将、お会計お願いします。

大将：はいよ。ちょっと待ってね。えーっと、全部で…全部で3200円。

客　：え？3200円？それだけですか？

大将：まあほんとはもっと高いんだけどね、お兄さん札幌から来たっていうから、ちょっとサービスしてあげるよ。

客　：本当ですか？ありがとうございます。

大将：そのかわり⁹お兄ちゃん、また次来てね。

客　：はい、また是非¹⁰来ます。あの、大将、ここの名刺とかありますか？

大将：あるよ。はい。これ名刺。

客　：ありがとうございます。じゃ、大将！また来ますので。

大将：じゃあね！仕事頑張ってね！

客　：はい、じゃあ、失礼します！

¹入れますか？（はいれますか）：When you enter an izakaya without reservation, you would usually ask them if you can enter, because in many cases even when you see empty seats, seats could be reserved.

²お兄さん（おにいさん）：A way to call a young man. It's a friendly way to call a young man. But you wouldn't use this when you talk politely. I recommend not to use it unless you get the sense of Japanese.

³〜かい？：A sentence ending particle that is used to ask a question in a friendly manner, you use it when you ask a question that can be answered by "yes" or "no". When you ask questions like "what" "where" "how", you cannot use 「かい」. You don't use かい when you talk in polite form. It is a casual way to ask a question, so it could sound impolite in many situations.

⁴サービス（する）：サービス in Japanese can mean something such as discount or a gift that a shop offers. If a store says 「コーラが一杯サービスです」, it means the store offers you a cup of coke for free. When izakaya says 「1000円サービスする」, it means it gives you 1000 yen discount.

⁶飲み方（のみかた）：way to drink

・〜割り：mixed with ~

⁷そのかわり：in exchange

⁸是非（ぜひ）：used to put emphasis on willingness of the speaker. When someone invites you to something, you can just say 「行きます」 to say "I'll come". But by adding 「是非」, you can put emphasis that you are willing to go. 「是非行きます」

Hello! Excuse me, one person, can I enter?

大将：大丈夫だよ。空いてる席に座って。

No problem. Please sit wherever is empty.

客　：あ、はい。

Yes.

大将：お兄さん、何飲む？

Young man, what will you drink?

客　：じゃあ生ビール一つお願いします。

大将：はい、これビールね。お兄さん、どこから来たの？

客　：札幌です。

I'm from Sapporo.

大将：札幌！そんな遠いところから？旅行かい？

Sapporo! You came from such a far place? Traveling?

客　：いや、仕事です。

No, working.

大将：そうなんだ！せっかく札幌から来たんだったら、何かサービスしてやんないといけないなあ。

I see! You came all the way from Sapporo to here, so I should give you something for free.

客　：え！本当ですか？でも、いいですよ、ちょっと悪いので。

Oh, really? But you don't need to. I feel bad.

大将：いやいや、遠慮しなくていいから。お兄さん、焼酎は好きかい？

Don't worry about it. Hey young man, do you like shochu?

客　：はい、好きですよ。

Yeah, I like it.

大将：じゃあ地元のおいしい焼酎一杯サービスしてあげるよ。

客　：本当ですか？ありがとうございます！

大将：そのビール飲んだら出してあげる。それで、注文は決まったかい？

I give it to you after you finish the beer. So, did you decide what to order?

客　：あのー、ここ刺身ありますか？

Well, do you have sashimi?

大将：あるよ。

Yeah.

客　：じゃあ大将おすすめの刺身の盛り合わせをください。

Then, give me a plate of sashimi that you recommend.

大将：はいよ。

Okay.

客　：あと、タコワサビ一つと、きゅうりの一本漬けを一つ、ししゃも焼きを一つ、あとだし巻き卵を一つお願いします。

And, give me one octopus wasabi, one pickled whole cucumber, one grilled capelin and one dashimaki egg.

大将：あ、ごめん、ししゃも焼きもう売り切れちゃったんだよね。

Oh sorry, capelin is sold out.

客　：あ、そうなんですか。じゃあ他に何かおすすめの魚料理ってありますか？

Oh, I see. Then, do you have any other fish food that you recommend?

大将：うーん、うちのアジのなめろうはすごいおいしいよ。

Well, namero of horse mackerel in our place is really tasty.

客　：じゃあ、それで願いします。

Give me that, then.

大将：はいよ。

Okay.

（ビールを飲み終える）

大将：あ、ビール飲み終わったね、今から焼酎出すけど、飲み方はどうする？

You finished your beer. I give you the shochu now, how do you like to drink?

客　：その焼酎は麦ですか？芋ですか？

Is that wheat shochu? Or potato?

大将：これは芋だよ。

This one is potato.

客　：じゃあすいません、ロックでお願いします。僕芋焼酎飲むときはロックなんですけど、麦焼酎飲む時は水割りが好きなんですよ。

Well then, give me one on the rocks. I usually drink potato shochu on the rocks, but when I drink wheat shochu then I like to mix it with water.

大将：へえ、そうなの。はい、これ焼酎のロック。あと、これがチェイサー。

Oh, I see. Here's shochu on the rocks. And this is the chaser.

客　：ありがとうございます。

(焼酎を飲み終える)

大将：お兄さん、次の飲み物どうする？

What do you like to drink next?

客　：じゃあまた同じの一つください。

客　：はい、僕は毎日飲みますね、普段はビールですけど。

客　：え？3200円？それだけですか？

Yeah? 3200 yen? Is that all?

大将：まあほんとはもっと高いんだけどね、お兄さん札幌から来たっていうから、ちょっとサービスしてあげるよ。
