Spurred on by a simple question from the user Ketchup through the Lantern’s Reign discord channel where they asked:
“Any homebrew rules for adding Flower Replica Sword and Flower Helm to a non-Bloom campaign?”
I decided to whip together an “integration package” for this rare gear. Normally, these gear cards are only available to survivors from the Flower Knight expansion’s Bloom People campaign, where the Flower Knight is deified and inspires the survivors to create these wondrous pieces of equipment, but this also offers the opportunity to present some unique storytelling opportunities for non-Bloom People campaigns. What happens if survivors find the overgrown ruins of a Bloom People settlement on the edge of the Abyssal Woods? Can a survivor who has duelled with the Flower Knight be inspired by its elegant armor? The integration package contains two simple alternatives to acquiring this gear in a non-Bloom People campaign: the strain system and the pattern system - pick your poison!
The strain system was first showcased through the Echoes of Death white box; where if your settlement has achieved a specific milestone during the ‘Check Milestones’ step of the settlement phase, you draw that strain milestone card from the deck and resolve the card’s permanent effects. Additional strain milestone cards have since been introduced in Echoes of Death 2, the Gigalion vignette, the Santa Satan pinup and the 10th anniversary White Speaker, with additional strain milestones promised in wave 3’s Campaigns of Death.
Perhaps the strain system is not your cup of tea? Don’t worry, you can add these pieces of rare gear through the pattern system as well. First showcased in the 10th anniversary Survivors box set and further expanded with Oktoberfest Aya and the Halloween White Speaker, patterns allow your settlement to showcase their ingenuity and creativity. When a survivor gains enough understanding and reaches the Insight milestone, they draw a card from the Pattern deck, along with completing the Insight story event. This pattern card is now available for the settlement to craft (up to the card’s crafting limit, illustrated by the yellow tab in the upper-left hand corner of the card) during the settlement phase and offers unique “chase” conditions for survivors to complete before they can craft the gear. If you’d like to check out additional homebrew pattern cards, make sure you check out the “Allison the Twilight Knight” expansion as well!
Hope you enjoy! What kind of strain and pattern cards would you like to see in the future?
