Podcast ep 4 - Afrobeats/Amapiano in K-Pop

In this episode I get into where I stand on the effects of globalization essentially and how influential these African genres are in a market that doesn't always credit where the music comes from whilst also at times discriminating against people of African descent.

Is it all negative if black producers/choreographers are also finding work and opportunities via this channel?

What a great episode. I thought you might bring up Le Sserafin and a couple of their songs

Beth LaRue

Yeahh exactly. As long as it's acknowledged, credited AND you don't discriminate against those very same people then go ahead lol. Yes the choreo usually misses the mark!

To be honest I think the whole cultural appropriation thing is a confused concept. Adopting what's great from other cultures is a good thing so long as its acknowledged and is respectful. The whole of K-pop is built on cultural appropriation in the sense that they are putting their own spin on non-Korean genres of music. I'm completely agree with you on the disappointing choreography with afrobeat songs though. TXT's Tinnitus is maybe my favourite K-pop afrobeat song but I don't like watching performances of it because the choreo is so disappointing.
