Podcast Episode 3 - ITZY

"In this episode I briefly summarize ITZY's history and try and pin point where things went wrong for a group that literally BURST onto the scene in 2019!
I wanted to wait for the latest album to drop first to see where I stood and IF they would do things differently ... in some ways they did and in some ways we still have some of the same issues. "

I wish I understood what sauce has been missing from Itzy for the last few years. I still think Imaginary Friend is one of the best kpop releases of all time tbh. It was received well, too, from what I recall. I think people want/wanted variety from itzy, which is why everyone got SO excited about the concept photos for checkmate and then were SO letdown by sneakers. People (me...) got tentatively excited for the concept for GWBG because wow the artistry? It was so different from everything else going on in kpop. But then we got the same classic sound. I love this group, I just think they're scared to experiment with them now.

I would say, as a Midzy, I never had a problem with their music or title track selection. Because of what their name means, I always expected something different. Even as a girl group, ITZY has maybe like one love song, "Loco," and maybe "Not Shy." All their songs are about loving yourself and having confidence, with the only outlier being "Loco," which already makes them different and helps them stand out from their debut. Since their debut, ITZY's music has been polarizing. When they debuted, people said Dalla Dalla was going to flop. When "ICY" came out people said their music sucked and called them a one hit wonder. Hell, even "Wannabe" got hate until the shoulder dance went viral. This happened with every release, ITZY got hate. Loco and Mafia did better internationally than in Korea. Sneakers did better in Korea and was their best title track digitally since Dalla Dalla. Korea likes music like Sneakers and "Cake" more than I-fans. Cake did well in Korea and was their last song that charted in Korea. Meanwhile Internationally nothing ITZY does sastify's anyone and they became the punching bag of Kpop stans. I still don't understand how Sneakers got so much vitriol from people. You would think ITZY did something criminal, the way people were acting. ITZY loves that song and had so much fun performing it. Chaeryeong said it was the most fun she had on stage performing. At this time, people weren't only hating them for their music, but also said their choreography was too easy now. Fast forward to "Kill My Doubt," ITZY's confidence was shot. "Bet on Me" was them trying to show their vulnerability, and it was dismissed. "Cake" I loved it because yes you do have to tell yourself it will be okay even if things look crappy. Cake didn't deviate from ITZY's image or past songs, nor did "Sneaker." At this point, I'm even like whatever, people will never be satisfied. Then Lia goes on hiatus due to anxiety. For most of ITZY's career, she has gotten the brunt of hate for whatever reason, and it finally took a toll on her. "Born To Be" album comes out, and ITZY can showcase their individuality. People are still not happy. Born to be the song, ITZY comes back with a vengeance with their choreography. I loved the album so much. Lia comes back and they release "Gold" and "Imaginary Friends" as title tracks. "Imaginary Friends" is why Lia is in the middle a lot in the choreography. The GWBG album comes out, and again, the girls saved Lia in the video for a reason. The title track should not have been a surprise because in the trailer, they gave us a spoiler when Ryujin told J.Y. Park to stop playing the music. I also don't believe in so-so, song should have been the title track because nothing stops you from streaming a song. Other groups have b-sides that blow up with or without promotion. I've concluded that no matter what ITZY does, no one will be happy, and it's just not an ITZY thing. All JYPE groups are the punching bags of Kpop stans and in Korea they only love Day 6 there. Internationally is where all JYPE groups get their money and fandom. Hell, for as many people who rag on ITZY, it sure is hard for me to get tickets to their concerts when they are touring. Are there ITZY songs I don't care for? Yes. I think it's weird to like every song your fav puts out. My mantra for K-pop groups I don't bias is, just because I don't like their music, I never say a group music sucks. Music is subjective. I.E, I still think you should watch the "Born to Be" concert. XD
