aespa - Whiplash Mini

The TRUE IT girls, like I know they're loving being them lool. The styling for this era is the BIGGEST stand out for me, everyone looks amazing and there are NO weak links. I'm living for it.

Overall, the music isn't my bag but that doesn't take away the quality and cohesiveness of this album, it's arguably their best!

The house influence eats and they sell it WELL but I'm a sucker for their r&b/hip hop leaning songs, naturally lol.

This also feels like a continuation of the previous eras but also the start of a new one, that whiplash video EAAATSS!!!!!!

Enjoy!

Karina and Winter on Flowers really showcases why they’re such an unbeatable duo in Kpop in terms of dynamics. The way they add texture and weave the emotions of the song directly into their parts is so beautiful. At this point, every time I start a Karina verse I know she’ll add some spice into it that’ll give me exactly what I wanted to hear. She’s like a vocal shapeshifter. I wish that the final chorus of Pink Hoodie was a lot more explosive and they added more fun ad libs to fill it out, but otherwise I really enjoyed the album!

KJBDJFBSDJB FR!! Like they had her SQUEALING alll the time.

Koko3op

I’m sooooo happy Winter isn’t screaming anymore 🤣 her voice is starting to become one I enjoy listening to. They are really coming into who they are and I’m LIVING for it. We love 4 member groups 😆

Jaycee

I have!! Yeah I was talking about it on discord! Love it for her cos the song and video are so good

Koko3op

My first thought was 'omg this is such runway music' and then when they walked at the end i was like YESSSS! The video is SO good, the attitude was perfect! I definitely would say Flowers is still my favourite from the album though, can't go past that production and the adlibs/backing vocals throughout 🙌

Question!! Have you listened to their solos from the digital single album yet? I still can’t get over Karina getting the all kill lol

cub

Yeah, I get that. For those who are not used to the Portuguese language it is more complicated to connect with people, because we communicate a lot by slang that differ depending on the place, not to mention the different accents. I hope you had a great experience here overall. Have a safe flight 💜

leticia p.

I’m leaving today!! Been here 11 days it was cute. Hard to communicate and connect with people tho sadly.

Koko3op

Hdhshshshs you’re so right cos I can’t stand the random punk/rock song on an album too. Kinda made it lose some points for me for sure

Koko3op

(sorry for the long comment incoming, I started writing and didn't realise just how much) I've been listening to a lot of Gesaffelstein lately, so Aespa came out with this type of sound at the perfect time for me! I absolutely love the styling and the mv. I love especially that Giselle seems to have found her identity. She's always been quite sassy off stage, but somehow timid on stage, maybe out of some insecurity? But I'm so glad to see that she's coming out of her shell in this comeback and is finally blooming. I knew she had it in her, I've always seen her as the other diva of the team alongside Ningning, with NN being the timeless type and Giselle the genZ type. I hope she keeps this confidence and shines even more in future projects. As for the album, I liked all songs except for "Just another girl", I'm not into this trend of putting a punk/rock inspired track in the album out of nowhere (I'm kind of a hater actually if I'm being honest). While I'm a rnb enjoyer, I'm also a techno/synth fan, and would absolutely love if they released more remixes with mvs like they did for Armageddon and Supernova, especially considering the slay of their new ae characters. They have been underutilised for how good they look, so I wouldn't mind more videos following the style of the medley. I'm a bit confused at how soon they came back after such heavy hitters like Supernova and Armageddon (I'm still not over THAT styling and concept, should've milked it more), but I really liked it, so much that I'm kinda scared, they're too good, are they releasing another banger so quickly because their team has a lot of ideas? Anyway, not a miss yet.

This wasn't my favorite aespa project, but I like their artistic direction. Flights not, feelings was my favorite. Maybe it's because the song reminds me of something NCT 127 would put out. Not saying they sound exactly alike, but it reminds me of Time Lapse with the intentional somewhat off beat rapping/singing (idk how to word that lol) and the r&b and hiphop elements. I love this kind of sound from sm groups

Frida

The other day I made a comment about how the new kpop meta is this newjeans, illit, loossemble, rescene, wall of sound they got going on. Well, the OTHER meta, let's call it the cunt meta, is this one: whiplash, supernova, crazy, super lady...lol

C Baker M

This is one of the best music videos i have ever seen like the styling is insane

yuta

Whiplash is my powerwalking song of the moment lol I think the only song from the album that wasn’t reaaally my vibe is Just Another Girl, but overall this is a solid mini to follow up Armageddon. Also, don’t know if you saw it, but they released the studio versions of the girls solo’s and the recording behind the scenes for Whiplash. AND I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE IN MY COUNTRY?????????? How long are you staying? Hope you enjoy your time here 💜💜💜

it's not bad at all! i was watching this livestream from this Korean youtuber and he mentioned that Aespa is known in Korea for having a "metallic sound or iron to their visuals which somehow translates to their sound too" and i wanted to be like "that's the house influence" but i don't comment outside of some Black spaces online. i'm a sucker for their r&bs too so kinda sad on that end but happy they are trying out new things. apparently might be winning album of the year though.

Stella

Thank you for saying it because when I first listened to the album I wasn’t crazy about it besides whiplash and catching flights not feelings I probably won’t revisit this album truly just a preference thing but when the album finished my first thought to myself was I want a GOT the beat comeback. I miss them. But Aespa found their sound and identity the members of are fully submerged in their confidence and their aura shine through every aspect of the process for the album or era and it beautiful to see. I’m so invested in them.

Ariana Thompson

i’m glad they tried new sounds out this album, the super poppy songs and ballads they usually do aren’t my vibe so i rly like this one. FNF’s vibe reminds me of muddy water by skz

Carmen

Hahaha and I'll just throw you off next time! But yes their looks definitely help!

Koko3op

I actually kind of predicted your thoughts on this album for once! Maybe I’m finally learning 😂 Tbh they could’ve put out rubbish music and somehow the looks and styling of this era would’ve made me like it lmao, but the fact they also put out a really solid album too is just the cherry on top. I’m half tempted to go and see them again when they come back to the UK, but idk…I’ve already seen all my fav songs of theirs live the last time 🤔

Joe B

Yeahh I totally hear this!

Koko3op

Haha nice!! Okay cool

Koko3op

They must be glad to have found their identity so quickly. I love whiplash but the rest of the album doesn't really speak to me besides flowers. I think I've come to the realization that I don't really like aespas bsides that much but they pick great titles which is what really matters!

Kai Leon

Thank you for this!! I’ve been listening to SM artists via your reactions because of the boycott (except for Taeyeon lol). I’ve been waiting on this cause Aespa is too good!! I’ll watch it later tho. I’m in class.
