Sohyang Mujin Service

The screen recording glitched but it comes back around the 2min mark.

Soo I think by the end of the reaction I could verbalise what's missing for me in regards to her artistry as a singer.

Being impressive isn't enough to move me for the most part, rather, uniqueness and unexpected musicality which I did not experience much of except a couple moments.

Maybe it's all over stimulation and I need to get used to her voice, I think I'll like her album though so maybe I'll check it out but I'm definitely a less is more kinda person when it comes to vocals with TASTERS of more.

Enjoy!

Please do Jo Yuri's Mujin Service episode!!! She was a main vocalist in IZ*One alongside Chaewon! Her tone is beautiful and unique! Her influences are mostly R&B singers, her very first performance was a Beyoncé song. Funnily enough she audtioned on Produce48 with NCT Dream's Chewing Gum but then the judges asked her to sing a song by herself and she BLEW them away with a rendition of Bruno Mars' Runaway Baby. She is also well know for her amazing Jessi J Casualty of Love cover that she did during her pre-audition for the show. She has always been so talented but she just keeps getting better, and makes it her mission to give the best version of herself each time. I think you'll fall in love with her voice when you watch the episode. Her title tracks might not be your style (I think you'll like her debut Glassy the best) but her B-sides always blow everyone away. My favorite b-side of Yuri's is called Blank but Rolla Skates and Favorite Part are VERY close seconds.

Thank you!

I do agree with a lot of the points you made even though I'm personally a big fan of her tone (most of the time). She has some great covers on king of masked singer, some different styles like rock and hip hop and also just some fantastic high vocals and beautiful cry worthy ballads. Highly recommend!

The fact that she was diagnosed with cancer but was still able to maintain her voice through the years is a miracle.

Yesss sometimes it's just an immediate click that's just not there sometimes.

ok really random but could you react to kim sungkyu's killing voice? he's the judge from peak time and a main vocalist from infinite. i saw your reaction to infinite's killing voice and i thought you might like his as well. definitely showcases his beautiful vocals so hope you get a chance to watch it even if it's not for a reaction :)

That's the weird thing about music, you can try to analyze it objectively, and I really appreciate how you try, but the actual stuff that connects with us, is just a feeling in the gut. As you get older, you get a sense of what is "my type", as patterns start to emerge, but its still puzzling. Sohyang has never quite worked for me as well, and I've listened to quite a bit. Maybe I just like imperfect singers? As far as veteran female Korean singers go, I really click with SWJA

Yess originals are best to really learn the artist! Her covers are great but like you said, her voice is “perfect” so there’s already an expectation and even if she meets those expectations, it’s like already a given. Her originals should show the music she truly wants to sound and the lyrics she truly wants to says. Excited

Yeahh this is why I wanna check out her music I think. I need to get to know her properly so then I see what she really is about!

Koko3op

Great review! I think she will always be hit or miss for a lot of people because of exactly what she talked about in the episode - she became known because of her high notes. So some people will make that her image as a singer. Which is not completely false, but obviously she is much more than just high notes. The one thing I disagree with is uniqueness and musicality. Maybe it wasn’t displayed here as much but I think her willingness to take risks and make a song her own is very unique to me. The national anthem she sings went viral because no one ever sung the national anthem differently like that before. But she didn’t do it just to show off, that is just her being unapologetically her lol. I’d rather a singer, especially a solo singer, be able to take risks and have confidence in their voice. Just my humble opinion lol.

Brooklyn

Maybe!

Yess it might be those reasons why. Agreed, she's maintained her voice amazingly!

As an fan of Sohyang, I definitely agree with you on some points. I haven't been feeling her recent performances as much too (except for her rendition of I AM). If you have time someday, maybe you can give her another chance and watch some of her other performances like: "Misty" and "Please" from Begin Again and "Everyone" from Immortal Songs. These performances are some among many that made me fall in love with her voice.

Hi will you do Lia’s and Yeji’s?

I agree I feel like Sohyang is amazing but often predictable---I wonder if it's because she mostly has classical training + the korean gospel background. I really liked how much self-awareness she showed here though. I haven't heard much of her personal music either but I have seen her show some fun musicality on competition shows so maybe her own stuff is more fun. When she mentioned Jo Sumi's ability to maintain her vocal condition, I was thinking Sohyang should also give herself some credit bc at 45 she seems to be doing pretty damn good at maintaining her vocal quality all these years. I wasn't sure if you were gonna react to this one but I'm glad you did and it was really nice to hear your thoughts!
