Apparently the pronunciation can go either way and they elected to go with the N sound. Apparently it is viewed by some as being more proper.

The way I heard it was that most of those stories of the Type 99 blowing up were because the GI's would throw live ammo in the training rifles which were made of pig iron and not designed for it. The rifles were marked as trainers, but with the GI's being unable to read Japanese the results were what you might expect. The rifle got an unfair reputation not because of being flawed, but because a similar looking rifle was used inappropriately.

The "Mum" on all the Jap rifles was ordered defaced by MacArthur in some kind of deference to the Emperor. I believe that most of the rifles with an intact Mum are actual combat captures rather than the souvenier rifles brought back from occupied Japan. All that being said, I really wish that Mae would wear a good set of shooting glasses, especially when shooting a potential "hand grenade" like the last ditch Arisaka.
