In a province of great food, the town of Yuanjiang has stood out to us so far as one of our favorite places to visit.
Administratively, it sits underneath our current home of Yuxi, and rather close to much of Han Yunnan as the bird flies. But this place exists smack dab inside of a canyon formed by the Hengduan range, an infamously treacherous and barely navigable chain that historically divided the province into distinct trading networks. So in addition to being a mix of various ethnic groups, it also has a unique micro-climate that's much more 'tropical' than many of its neighbors (it's the center of mango production in Yunnan for a reason).
From Tamarind-seasoned cold noodles, to Arrowroot Jelly, to various Hani People's dishes... there's a lot to cover here, and we'll get to many in due time. But the town is also quite famous for it's Shaokao Barbecue scene, with a pair of dishes that you can't find anywhere else: Beef Jerky & Fried Egg Noodle Soup, and this one - Egg Battered Fried Potatoes.
Hope you enjoy it. As I note in the video, if you don't feel like deep frying, definitely at the very least try the dipping sauce that goes with this - it's excellent.
