That would depend on the situation. Inhabited planets that are close enough to the front to be in danger of attack will usually have some kind of fleet based there and one or more citadels (military orbital stations), and the fighters will mostly be assigned to those ships or stations. How many ships or stations are there will depend on the threat of attack. Standard fighter complements for various ship types are listed here: https://well-of-souls.com/outsider/fleet_loroi.html

Arioch

Cool, and a planetary garrison? How many small craft will be present in say a single planetary system?

Cosmic Pillar

Spacecraft don't have a fixed "range" the way that aircraft do, as since there's no air resistance a spacecraft can travel any distance given enough time. So the limitation of space fighters is how long they can burn their engines at what acceleration rate, which is complicated. Most fighters can accelerate at about 40G, compared to about 30G for typical large vessels, so it's not like terrestrial combat where the big ships are standing still compared to the aircraft. Space fighters can and do operate away from their mother fleets, but given the nature of momentum (any velocity you build up on the way out has to be canceled out before you can even START back to the carrier), there are limits on how far you want to go from your mothership, which depends heavily on what the fleet is doing while you're gone. There is also the limit of how long the fighter can support the pilot(s)' biological needs, which is usually no more than a few days for a typical single-seat fighter. The Loroi have a lot of these small craft, but the loss rate for them is high. Strike Group 51 had 19 interceptors deployed in the second battle at Naam, but a full strike group might have as many as 40. Groups with dedicated carriers would have more.

Arioch

Hey Arioch, how many fighter spacecraft (interceptors, bombers, assault shuttles, heavy fighters) does the Loroi military have and what is their range? I was looking at WWII fighter aircraft numbers and got curious.

Cosmic Pillar

My guess is *REDACTED* in case its close to the story and will be a spoiler.. in short manipulating a predicable enemy...

Dweller on the Threshold

Hmmm... I wonder if those 60 torpedoes can be fired without target lock? They 'could' be used as a obscurement "Battering Ram" to force their way through the approaching fleet formation. Fire them in say clusters volleys of 4 at a time to detonate at a specific distance in front of the KTKh... to cause targeting difficulties with thermal and radiation spikes to make it hard for them to be targeted as they race on to the jump point it might also discourage the smaller fast frigates from getting close into their SR Plasma focus range for fear of getting hit with the blast splash. Of course they can try to shoot the missile clusters down.. but since they are not aimed at the Umiak ships and not establishing a sensor lock to target them.. they are not actually going to be in range to shoot them down. Its like fishing with dynamite when you want to clear schools of piranha out of your way to an underwater cave.. in this case the jump point.

Sunphoenix72

It's "possible"... the Historian AI might open communications with the approaching Umiak Flotilla and try to infiltrate their systems to either hack their systems as this is not likely a tactic that the Loroi have EVER used against Umiak ships ~ well other than normal ECM and ECCM efforts to confuse sensors. A full on Cyber-infiltration might actually until now not have been possible as clearly the Umiak systems do not have the same software compatibility to loroi software. But now that the ambassador - Artificial Construct has had time to 'digest' the Umiak computer network... that might be a serious tactical advantage? @Aricoh - Do the Loroi or Umiak do cyberwarfare on any extent?

Sunphoenix72

Its been telegraphed that the ship has torpedos ready to fire... The crew has control of fire control and I assume that the friend / foe systems have been hacked. Battle coming up... though I suspect its going to be more subtle than a simple broadside.. hehe

Dweller on the Threshold

That was the incident Tempo referred to on page 109 that ignited the war; Loroi and Umiak forces in the Ukko system exchanged weapons fire. The Umiak claim that it was the Loroi who fired first. The Loroi don't know what happened, since none of their units present escaped the subsequent massive Umiak offensive. https://well-of-souls.com/outsider/forum_war_history.html

Arioch

Oh, Arioch, tyvm for the response, I had a quick question, what was the Ukko incident? On the Loroi timeline, it says: Ukko incident: Umiak invade Seren sector; Great War begins. Loroi quickly lose most of the Steppes.

Cosmic Pillar

The Umiak can disable the IFF safeties on their own torpedoes, and by the time Kikitik's division gets into range to fire, they will have had time to do so. However. doing so would be risky, since it would mean that errant torpedoes could accidentally target their own ships.

Arioch

Wouldn't they already be firing if that was the case?

Cosmic Pillar

why wouldn't the enemy be able to fire missiles in return? even with IFF safety interlocks, there has to be a manual override that experienced Umiak technicians would know about, right?

Ronald Homer

...maybe the torpedoes are about to use a defibrillator? "Clear!" *shock* <3

Sunphoenix72

where is that technical data comming from?

markus baur

My oh my, coffee and pie

GhostlyYorick

Wait. If our heroes can fire missiles at the enemy, and the enemy cannot fire missiles in return... then... oh my.

Cosmic Pillar

I can totally understand why 'The Stray' is not ignoring one of THOSE KTKh-Fast Cruiser 'Pillboxes of Death' running rogue in the back of his fleet formation! That's some real SCREW you up the Tailpipe pain ~ in that damned near 30G, 4 Medium Range Plasma Focus, 60 torpedo payload {Nothing else that heavily armed than a TT-Superheavy} death dealer! He CAN'T ignore it!

Sunphoenix72

Yaayyy no surprise visits with baseball bats for Arioch! 😁

Jericho

There's only one way to find out... 🚀😎

MrWho

Hooooo boy. On page 240, they concluded that the Umiak torpedoes probably wouldn’t work because of their friend-or-foe systems. But if a Historian construct tampered with them…

Alexander Freeman

Hmm... Our gallant crew only used beam weapons in their previous engagements, I think, but we don't know how many torpedoes were in the ship's magazines when they hijacked her, so... But a salvo of torpedoes would come in handy to break through that wall of enemy vessels.

Canopus

'Clear to fire' or 'tubes are clear/empty of missiles'? Latter might be unfortunate, but not unexpected, given this is a (relatively) small ship, and the Umiak are fond of the MLRS approach to warfare.

ANTIcarrot

TEMPO LIVES!

Ad Solte

Damn.. that KTKh Series is Nasty! 60 onboard torpedoes and 4 MR Plasma Focus?!?! Sheesh only the Type-TT Superheavy carry THAT many MR Plasma Focus or Torpedo Capacity!

Sunphoenix72

Yes.

Arioch

It's Beryl speaking.

Arioch

Wait.. is that Fireblade Speaking or someone off cell?

Sunphoenix72

So is the KTKh-3827 an Umiak Type-KTKh Fast Cruiser? The hybrids that have the 28-29G of acceleration.

Sunphoenix72

"Captain Ensign" -- good joke, Arioch
