Gramsci Sleaze Part 2 w/ Mike Crumps, Matthew Donovan, Lucia Ribisi, Devon Young

In our bonus episode we talk about Crump's history writing for an nrx blog, the Praxis city-state, esoteric hitlerism, the Cat Power movement, more about the Donzinger and Chris Small event, way too much about a guy named Dagsen, and if we truly believe revolution is possible

Thanks to Lucia Ribisi and Devon Young for popping in the Sean seat!

Comments

It was genuinely shocking to me when Lucia Ribisi revealed that she is Giovanni’s daughter, not because I give a shit about him but because in my mind Cat Power is on the highest level of celebrity possible

La synarquista

turns out we were living in the better world :(

The Antifada

Though I also found this interview pretty annoying, it did provide some kind of temporal mirror to me and my friends in early 2000s Olympia, reading Crimethinc, dumpster diving, fermenting shit and imagining a better world while being insular insufferable hipsters

I come away from this episode thinking maybe fascism is a threat but in reality the threat is hegemonic small L liberalism that is the true impediment to working class revolution. Thiel gets to play pretend monarch because of the liberal hegemony he detests. If you squint the right way liberal democracy can look a lot like fascism.

I am glad to wake up and see these comments because listening to people basically having a private conversation about a ‘scene’, ‘millieu’, and ‘set’ was about the most alienating thing I’ve ever heard on Antifada. It sounds like a lot of NYC people who miss the fun they had in their 20’s deciding to build their own “quirky” personalities around esoteric and incoherent politics. It’s like a page 6 gossip column for micro/niche celebrities mixed with a conspiracy theory red-string cork board. The moment I have to start dissecting the sub-genre of ironic nazi I ran into at a party would probably be moment I start looking for listings of tar-paper shacks in the woods and getting out of NYC.

Who the hell are these people

Jesus Christ I hope Andy got paid time and a half to study hipsters, this shit made me want to die except for that random guy from Illinois who predicts a social revolution

You can hear Mike observing

Trenton Class

Also also, I think the ironic detachment affect of the '00s and '10s will eventually be understood as a disaster for leftist agitation, at least to the extent that the dirtbag left adopted it at a time when they were (arguably) culturally ascendant, if for no other reason than it just reads as standoffishness or elitism to Normal™ people. But that's a much hotter take than "who even are these people?" and I'm not totally prepared to defend it.

I think I got some of the broad strokes here, but a lot of this was totally inscrutable for someone who doesn't live in NYC. I also somehow understand even less now about whatever dimes square is, and I love that.
