Early bird: Conversion Capers!

Dear Supporters

Remember the DoubleJoy device I designed with patron Lorin Millsap to play 2 computers with 1 joystick? Well here's the continuation as I finally get to play test a bunch of games in search of the perfect port!

Video: https://youtu.be/kS3hb2ujG_0

I had a few logistical things to figure out during the making of this though it might not look like it, but I'm really happy with the end result and hope you are too.

Thank you for your ongoing support! 👍🕹

Thanks Steven. Good ideas there! Now I have the RasPi 400 arcade ports will definitely be easy to try. I never had a VIC-20 either so I know what you mean. Have fun with your Maxi!

This was a very fun and entertaining video; it was really cool to see how the games on the different systems compared to one another…especially while frequently looking from one display to the other to see where each game was in terms of how far you were progressing. It was really nice to see you enjoying yourself, particularly while playing the Rat Race game on TheC64 in VIC-20 mode. 🙂 I never had a VIC-20 growing up (my first computer ever was a Commodore 64), but seeing these games in the video and how much fun you looked like you were having while playing them is a compelling enough reason for me to try them out when I finally get my C64 Maxi. I would agree that Pitfall was the closest in being a perfect port (with the Choplifter game being a close second). Although Lemmings wouldn’t work as a candidate for the perfect port series in terms of the Commodore 64 versus Amiga, there are still a number of games that would work, and I think it would be fascinating to see how close each port on the Commodore 64 and Amiga actually were. As you correctly pointed out, however, they would have to be joystick driven, as the Commodore 64 didn’t have mouse support for its game library. Perhaps testing arcade ports on both respective systems might be the way to go. Although they are far from perfect when compared to their arcade counterparts, it would still be really interesting to see how each version plays before differences between each port would cause the games to no longer be synced in terms of gameplay. Maybe even throwing in footage of the arcade versions for comparison sake would show how each port differs from the original game, and how close the ports got to recreating the arcade experience at home. Some examples for the series that come to mind are: Outrun, After Burner, Golden Axe, Commando, Bionic Commando, and Strider, to name just a few. There are some games which, while never arcade games per se, were joystick driven (or at least supported on both systems) and would make excellent candidates for the perfect ports series as well, such as: International Karate +, the Last Ninja games, and even the Turrican series. I sincerely enjoyed watching the first of what is sure to be an awesome series in and of itself as time goes on; personally, I can’t wait to see what games make it into the future recipodes. Have a good one, Christian, and take care. 🙂
